Training Pre-season 2018

We need to have some big improvement and summers from guys in the 21-24yr old bracket.
I'm looking at Moore, JDG, Aish, Maynard, Scharenberg, Maynard, Broomhead, WHE etc.

It's still hard to realise that Aish is only 21- turning 22 in November.
He needs more midfield minutes and to be stop being utilised as a HBF.
Just let him play instinctively as part of the midfield mix. That way we will find out if he can cut it or not because right now, we just don't know enough because he isn't being utilised accordingly. If he doesn't make it so be it, at least we will have known. He was drafted as a midfielder, time he played there exclusively.

Once upon a time we used to have 10-12 midfielders deep that rotated.
Nowadays we are too fixated on never changing it up- it's always the same mainstays- we need to find variety, mix and options.
Can never have enough midfield rotation options.

I agree. However, I see the following players ahead of him in terms of midfield rotations.
Pendles, Adams, Sidebottom, Treloar, JDG, Maynard,Wells, Greenwood, Crisp, You can add outside specialists Phillips, WHE, and Varcoe to the mix. I've probably missed one or two. To be honest, I don't know if Aish fits. I think he's a decent enough player and could command some reasonable currency at the right club. You can argue that he should be getting games ahead of Greenwood and Varcoe, but if I was picking a eam to win next week, I'd pick both of those players ahead of him. He looks to be an accumulator with nice skills. He doesn't have the bullish nature of Adams, JDG, Maynard or Greenwood. He hasn't got the speed of Treloar, WHE or Varcoe and his finishing skills while good, don't have the impact or vision of Pendles, Wells or Sidebottom.

There's no Crisp should be in the midfield anymore.

He doesn't rack them up enough and nor is he damaging.
It's either half back for him or bust.

Varcoe also shouldn't be in the midfield mix. He's a flanker.

Greenwood- I don't rate him as highly as others. I don't think he's in our best side overall considering he gets deployed as a permanent forward unless he tags Selwood.
He doesn't hurt enough.

I can see your arguments in all cases. The fact that I dont see Aish ahead of them is a concern I would've thought

Agreed, Aish is overflow at our club - TBH there wouldn't be a lot of mids that would make our 22 outside of what we have now and goes to show the imbalance on our list

List pretty much Full of Mids

Yep and that is partly the reason of where we're at, now we have a situation where the bank is empty as far as trading is concerned and we need a KPP or 2 and so we probably forced to develop what we have outside the centre square to bridge the gap (or attempt to). TBH TD I think we should be a top 8 side with what we've got and development has been a glaring disappointment and no doubt having better artillery where the sticks are at both ends we'd be better again

I will be driving through Lake Boga in 20 mins. Will be keeping an eye out for Kirby. Hopefully he is not keeping an eye out for me and I can sneak up on him for a hug. It’s not breaking a restraining order as long as they don’t see you right?

I don't know. Why don't you get your lawyer to consult the ample amount of case law precedent for an answer...?

I am now in Swan Hill and unfortunately there was no sighting of Kirby driving through Lake Boga. I am genuinely shocked. I was certain he would just be sitting at the side of the Murray Valley Highway waiting to greet the many fans that would inevitably drive by and recognize him.

He's spent the last six weeks running. Last sighted somewhere across the nullarbor. He'll win the Day 1 Preseason time trial by 5 minutes.

In all seriousness, I’m expecting him to be by far the biggest improver in the time trials this preseason.

Was at the Holden Centre last week for a function and by 8.30am the Pendles family, JDG and I think a few of the youngsters (McCarthy, Brown) were all there and firing. They all looked in fine fettle.
I like the post but was that a typo, McCarthy went and got delisted yesterday.

I just hope that Kirby is doing an hour a day of aerobic fitness during the off-season.
I hope that VB don't bring out a Kayle Kirby Doll that gives pearls of beer inspired wisdom

Just read the little write up on Tyler Brown on the AFL website. Sounds like a lively type.

Got me wondering about our running backman issue. Sinclair is no certainty, Ramsay has stalled, Varcoe is injury prone leaving Crisp and Maynard to pick up the slack. I am, like many, quite excited by the idea of Maynard having more midfield minutes. But unless Sinkers et al pick up the slack in the back line I'm not sure we can afford to have Maynard going through the middle...

I think I'd like to see if Callum Brown could play that role. In the games he played this year, you could see he had the tools to be very good - hard at it, good tackler, good hands, nimble in contested situations - but you could also see that he was half-a-second off the pace at times regarding positioning, running patterns, reading the play etc. Well, now that Maynard has gone through his apprenticeship and is ready to step up, why don't we get Callum Brown to develop in the same vein down back? I think it'll help accelerate his development and I think he could be quite a neat player bouncing out of defense.
