Good point! plus he's reportedly fitter and apparently not a bad kick of the pill...
This is why I like Edwards so much. His defensive work and marking is so good but for 200cm bloke his kicking is so good. I hope his desicion making is better than Gov's tho. They touched it on backchat but the only way now Edwards gets better is playing seniors and playing on the key talls. Gov might be 30 but he potentially has a heap of footy left. We some how need to get Edwards into our b22 over the next couple years.

This time last year we were all frothing at how good he looked vs Cockburn.

His stats were good, and I'd love being proven wrong in regards to negative opinions about the Eagles. From what I've been advised about those who know him well from his senior year says otherwise. Hope we find a player in him - don't get me wrong.

Be nice if XON did something.

Clarks dead. Trew is dead, and I've got doubts he'll survive this years cut, particularly if he can't get his body right.

Ditto Jamieson. Would like to see something. Glimpses. He was rucking against Bailey the other day. Even Jilliams got a go in the ruck, but you never see Jamo do anything in the highlights, and he never gets mentioned by the Eagles ever.

I'm not sure if XON played in that intraclub, but I haven't heard anything about him getting a look, and he seems fit going by the training pics.

These are the players I'd like to hear about pushing for selection. Seems the Chesser, Hough and Clark combo (until he died) is more talked about in the main team than player's who have legit been developing on our list for year/s
I was literally thinking after watching the highlights yesterday, where is XON? I was hoping he'd step up this year but I haven't read or seen anything about him. Quite disappointing as he really needs to be coming on now.

He was in the rehab group at training recently so has some injury but who knows if we will ever find out what it is

Pretty sure I saw XON making a strong tackle on a defensive flank somewhere in the intraclub footage.

Between injury and the number of zero impact footballers we seem to have accumulated/trained I'm starting to return to a more pessimistic, regular season setting.

The pre-season buzz is wearing off rapidly.

Shame all our young mids who have shown a bit and we'd love to kick on this year are all injured - Edwards, Trew and Xon.

Now watch Chesser play 2-3 good games, then get a LTI and miss 8-10 weeks. Always happens to our first year players with promise - Ryan, Winder.

Wouldn't mind a season like Ryan's first tbh

Sometimes that lack of pressure on the ball carrier might just be from a structural mismatch rather than a lack of defensive effort, though. If Gov is only effective when the opposition is under pressure, then that makes him a limited player who can be exploited.

I think he can be effective in all circumstances but he needs to work on it, and if he’s been injured then hopefully he can have a clean run at it this year
I dont think anyone is saying he is only effective under those conditions. Intercept marking is his biggest strength no doubt, but he isnt a one dimensional player. But when we do pressure the ball carrier often enough he is the most influential attacking backman in the league. It wont happen 100% of the time but the more we can pressure opposition forward thrusts, the greater our rebounding attacks will become. We have been woeful in this area for a few years now, I hope Schofield and Knights have rectified it so we can make use of one of our biggest weapons- the Governator.

I'm not sure that Barrass will be out best option as a forward but this quote from Paul Haselby says he won't make it whilst describing some good traits:

"I don't see one little bit of Tom Barrass that says to me he's a forward," Hasleby told SEN.

"He's a player, to me, that is genuinely strong one-on-one, beats his opponent first but then is good in the air and can read it and intercept mark the footy.

"I don't think there's going to be a lot of success for Tom up forward."

Good one on one, good mark, intercepts aka reads the flight of the ball well. Nope nothing desirable for a forward there at all.

I actually agree with Hazleby. Being a key forward is about creating. He would need to be able to lead effectively and work with the other forwards. Being a good backman is about reading the play coming to you and being accountable for your man. I'm short, forwards are proactive and defenders are reactive.

The exception is the intercept marking defender who then counter attackers. This has primarily been Gov's role, so he would be a better bet up forward (and he has actually won us a couple of games when doing so).

Yup, for gods sake what else does he have to do as a forward - run around in circles, he already does that well too...? (ok, maybe ground ball gets, tackles)

To be fair, Gov has been average at best when tried forward, and that describes him too, and hes a better player altogether.

I was about to respond with an amusing GIF of Gov kicking the winning goal against Port Adelaide, but BigFooty's GIF machine has its priorities screwed up.

When you search "McGovern" only pictures of his hack brother come up!
