Nick Shipley, winner of last year’s time-trial, led the way for the first three laps before Tim Taranto took the lead on the final lap. It was Taranto who claimed the bragging rights, as he crossed over the line in first place with an impressive pre-season run. Shipley lived up to his expectations, crossing over the line second.

Young Xavier O’Halloran rounded out the podium, finishing closely behind Taranto and Shipley. Tom Green was a surprise inclusion at the front of the pack, finishing in fourth, while 2020 debutant Jack Buckley closed out the top five.

Also featuring on day one was new recruit Braydon Preuss, with Jesse Hogan set to land in Sydney on Tuesday. Lachlan Keeffe also returned early, running strongly with the younger players. The younger players will be joined by the draftees next week to complete a two-week training block before Christmas, with the full squad back in pre-season mode early in the New Year.

Shipley to be expected on past form, but great that TT came through strongly. Also very good to see XO and young Tom Green up there - obviously Tom has worked on his endurance over the season and off-season. That bodes well for his second season! Hopefully XO gets a crack as well to show his speed and endurance.

Lachie Keeffe continues to be a consummate professional. I've not been his greatest fan in the past, but credit where credit is due, both on field and off field! :thumbsu:

Things you love to see, big 2021 for Greeny ahead I'd be guessing

The pre-Christmas training period is usually for the first to fourth year players, but Taranto - who enters his fifth year with the club - was eager to return early.

Seems to be a lot of talk around the club of players getting in.

Jesse headed over early as did Preuss to get in.

Good signs for where our heads are at.

The GIANTS will then resume games in Canberra - alongside the AFLW team - for a blockbuster weekend of football at Manuka Oval.

Greater Western Sydney has rushed to get their interstate players home for Christmas, deprioritising training with the COVID-19 cluster growing in the NSW northern beaches. As of Friday morning, the cluster at the northern beaches had grown to 28 with other states announcing differing quarantine policies for anyone who has lived in or visited the area.

The Giants confirmed they had cancelled their final field training session - scheduled for Friday morning - to give interstate-bound players the opportunity to get home while their AFLW team had their Christmas break brought forward to Friday. The Giants' AFLW team were due to train on Friday night and then next Monday and Wednesday before commencing their break, but are now immediately on leave.

Heading home is unlikely to be an option for players from Western Australia though, as anyone who has entered the state from December 11 onwards now has to have a coronavirus test and self-quarantine for 14 days.

I checked the website before I posted my question, but it didn't come up? Odd.

So, great that Josh Kelly won - I don't think he's ever featured that high before - so hopefully it indicates he's returned in good fitness. TT second confirms his pre-Christmas run was no fluke, and seems to indicate his fitness level is very high.

Ryan Angwin was a noted distance runner (6:11 2km time) so finishing third confirms his attribute, but also hopefully means with two ahead of him the times were pretty good.

''Nick Shipley and Lachie Whitfield fought it out in the defenders run while Jake Riccardi just pipped Toby Greene in the forwards group.

Jacob Hopper - sporting a fresh new ‘streamlined’ haircut - finished in eighth, while second-year players Lachie Ash and Tom Green rounded out the top 10.''

Interesting that both Lachie & Shipley ran as defenders - wonder if Shippers will get an opportunity in the HBF position? The finishing spots for Hopper & Green are sound as well - will help them get to a lot of contests.

2km Time Trial Top 10
  1. Josh Kelly
  2. Tim Taranto
  3. Ryan Angwin
  4. Nick Shipley
  5. Lachie Whitfield
  6. Jake Riccardi
  7. Toby Greene
  8. Jacob Hopper
  9. Lachie Ash
  10. Tom Green

Hello all! I'm in Sydney for a few weeks and was hoping to pop across and watch the giants train. Does the club publish training times anywhere?

Where's your club at? Injuries, time trial king, pre-season star (afl.com.au)

Former skipper Phil Davis is the only Giant in the rehab group after undergoing knee surgery in September. The key defender's recovery is tracking as expected and he aims to be in full training by early February.
Midfielder Josh Kelly smashed the club's 2km time trial record in January, beating star teammate Tim Taranto, who had taken out the pre-Christmas time trial. Draftee Ryan Angwin finished third, ahead of midfielder Nick Shipley and versatile star Lachie Whitfield.
Who's flying?
Captain Stephen Coniglio returned to training noticeably leaner and appears to have put in a mountain of work in the off-season. Benefiting from a clean bill of health, the star midfielder was a presence early as the first to fourth-year players started, and also returned to training to meet the new draftees and spend time on the track.
And another thing...
Third-year defender Connor Idun has made an impression this pre-season and ran well in the Giants' 2km time trial. There is a vacant spot in defence after Aidan Corr joined North Melbourne and Idun looks ready to step up after three games in two seasons. - Nathan Schmook

Does anyone know how Jesse is going ?

Normally in a Freo pre-season he is injured or in trouble by now lol.

I saw him on Insta hanging out with mummy. Not sure if that’s a good thing haha
