Banter Preseason general discussion - The Reigning Premiers Edition

Last night I watched a halftime review of the Melb. final with Lyons, Brereton, McQuire and Roos on the panel -was fun watching the awe in which they held the Eagles, almost gushing over them while absolutely deriding the Dees. We flew under the radar, then pounced and dismantled a favourite.
Lyons said the Eagles came to play like men...The Dees played like boys. (ouch)

Also tried watching the AFLX, was disappointed. Much of nothing, with pink pills and American
razzamatazz! Rather watch intraclub or JLT, more relevance.
It was a staged exhibition game with little intensity, was slower that JLT games and badly let down by a pitiful commentary.

Interesting comment apparently made in the AFLW last night during the womens game. One of the players is cousins with the Rioli family. When they asked her to name the best of the lot, she said Willie was the most talented one. Ahead of Cyril etc

A interesting unbiased opinion that its fair to say

I don’t wish injury on any player but what a joke with Fyfe the flog. Delays his surgery to play AFLX. Apparently he knocked his elbow 2 weeks ago but delayed surgery to play AFLX.

Thank goodness Shuey had his priorities right in telling Fyfe to flock off as he did not want to join the Flyers

The flipside of that is he made a commitment to be a figurehead of AFLX and he followed through on that commitment. They expect him to play a JLT match and be ready for round 1 so this doesn't sound like that big a deal.

On a side note, I have a small bursar (same thing Fyfe has in his elbow) in my right foot and those suckers are very sore when they get inflamed, but you can definitely push through it.

Worki
Warm day may or may not have contributed to this being a pretty low key session which looked like a post game recovery of Friday’s intraclub. Anyways -

• Only half the squad come out to do stretches and then disappear. Other half comes out before the first half join them. Quick head count is up around 40 or just over so good numbers depending on how many last beyond warmup
• Naitanui and Cripps off jogging by themselves initially
• Waterman also doing his own thing so after rolling his ankle and recovering in time for the intraclub he’s obviously had another setback - his quad was iced at the finish of that game. Frustrating preseason for a guy that deserved to have his eye on replacing Lecca
• Brayshaw also away from the main group just handballing with an assistant and someone who looks like Foley - if it is him then he’s also had a setback of sorts. Likewise Brayshaw who did very little
• No Schofield - heard Duffield tell his photographer to try and get a shot because he saw Schoey with his leg strapped as the players first walked out. I didn’t see him and he never came out again.
• Rotham takes two goes to nail his birthday shot. Definitely a defender
• Laps for JK and Cripps as the main group do ball movement drills. Both of them ran repeatedly at good pace so that’s encouraging as they work their way back
• Naitanui is involved in some of the drills at I see him sprint 15-20m to take a chest mark. So far so good for him on his recovery. Genuine cause for optimism
• Brander training and showing no signs of any injury
• Duggan and barrass leave early. Just think they’d had enough rather than there being any cause for concern
• Masten also moving fine. Snaps a nice goal and gives himself a jubilant Masto
• Shuey not 100% and he sat out most of the session only getting involved spasmodically and never at anything more intense than a slow jog
• Players have split into numerous groups of varying size now - Hickmott and Yeo just in front of me giving Nelson a tutorial on how to collect a loose ball and either break a tackle or get a handball away under pressure
• Ainsworth in a group hitting a leading target - kick still looks kinda ugly but it’s effective. A bit like getting a blowie from a fat chick.
• Simmo comes out from where he’s been hiding in the shade that of the stands and has an extended chat with Smith
• After about 75 minutes it’s all winding down. As I’m driving home I realise I never noticed Achee so not sure if he wasn’t there or I just didn’t see him
Working blue now Keys, Noice.

Barely a year ago and there was a decent percentage that thought Yeo will never make it as a midfielder, no awareness in congestion etc. But it was all about getting the time in the middle and building consistency.

Reckon Nelson will be the same in that he develops consistency the more consecutive games he can string together at the highest level. His best efforts have been bloody good, and then he's prone to howlers. But he's only 22.

I'm still pretty optimistic about his ceiling as an AFL player, obviously not as high as someone like Yeo but he has the tools to be a productive mid/defender. Sounds like the club are still optimistic about his ceiling too if they're taking all this time to develop him in a new position this season. If all they saw in him was a lockdown defender, he wouldn't be leaving the defensive group.

Yeah he’s definitely not a natural lock down defender IMO so hopefully they can find a new role for him up the ground

If that's the case, recruitment have really stuffed up lately - emergency as a lockdown defender for the grandfinal, and only Kurt and Rotham as competition on the list there. Ofc Shep comes back in, but if you're writing Nelson off as a defender you should be in panic stations about our collection of small defenders.

Mark LeCras going in for more surgery on his wrist. Hope it isn't something that affects his quality of life going forward

The injury is going to prevent him from playing with his brother at Cervantes this year .. Which was a dream of his to play footy with the brother after AFL retirement ..

Watson, Smith maybe

But yeah, definitely wouldn’t be averse to drafting a specialist small defender

Would removing her finger make her less ugly?

It would make her a touch lighter I guess.
