Got down to training, have this:
Goddard - Seemed to be off for an entire quarter. Came on, played defence/midfield, and was a bit absent by his standards.
Crowley - One of the best on. Played forward quite a bit, where he is a difficult match up for flankers/small defenders due to strength and forward nous. When in midfield did a fair bit. In good shape.
Grima - Modified training.
Grimley - Popped up a lot in the forward line, snagged 3 or 4 goals and missed a few set shots he'd normally get. Seemed to benefit a couple of times from opposition turnovers coming out of defence where his man was obviously way out of position. Was probably the deepest forward for his team in most of the session.
Dea - Didn't notice him heaps, but he did deliver a few nice passes out of defence.
Z. Merrett - Not as prolific as usual, but still one of the better players and used the ball well when he got it.
Kelly - Spent a lot of time in defence and was ok.
Baguley - Didn't notice him much.
Cooney - spent whole game in the centre. Won a lot of his own ball and seemed to cop a lot of attention. Kicking was underwhelming, but to be fair he hasn't trained fully for a while so hold off for a few seconds before the inevitable meltdown.
Stokes - quiet other than a 5 minute burst after halftime when he kicked 2 goals and helped set up a shot at another.
Daniher - Was good. Kicked 3(?) goals, missed one or two on tight angles. Moved really well and marked with his arms out on the lead. Worked up the ground more to. Matched up on Gwilt for most part.
Gleeson - Did a fair bit in the first half, then did laps for a while and seemed to be taken out of the game. Played out of defence mostly with occasional wing stint. Looked good before laps.
Gwilt - Did well with ball in hand, and was one who would wait for an option down the corridor to come open rather than immediately kicking to a free man sideways. Outsized against Daniher, but Joe's speed was the thing that troubled him most since he took a few on the lead and up the ground.
Polkinghorne - Did a bit, kicked a nice goal.
Mckernan - Spent a fair bit of time in the ruck and only a bit forward. Performed well.
Zaharakis - One of the best on. Was better in stoppages and won ball on the outside too.
Ambrose - Played key defence and was ok.
Jamar - modified training.
Simpkin - Best top-up behind Crowley. Wore a hat presumably to make it easier for nobs like me to see him, and it paid off. Kicks within limitations, works hard and ran through the midfield region mostly. I'd be surprised if he didn't feature very early.
Kommer - In classic Kommer fashion he competed hard from a forward pocket. A+ for general sledging/talking.
J.Merrett - Played on a wing. Production levels were high, but ball use wasn't great. Snagged two nice goals towards the end.
Ashby - A couple of touches, but ball use has not improved.
Edwards - Quiet first quarter, strong second quarter in particular up forward where he was very good, generating a few shots (one was a goal) and setting up another, and then was in and out of it in the second half.
Fantasia - seemed to rebound out of defence mostly, but also spent time on the wing. Was good. Regularly looks for the longer option inside 50, set a lot of play up.
Hams - prominent early, went quiet as the game went on. Looked good at stoppages as usual, and played it safe when he had it on the outside.
Langford - liked his game, but he was a bit in and out of it at times. Played third forward for a lot of it, and kicked a nice goal from a tight angle 40m out. Can take stronger marks now.
Laverde - modified training. Could determine our top 4 ambitions.
Long - Looked stronger than last year (held his position and won a tough mark at one stage). Still up forward and still needs to find a way to get involved more.
Mckenna - Bit quiet but I did notice his pressure efforts were much better than last year.
Leuenberger - modified training.
Bird - Good and kicked a goal. Would like him to be more prominent.
Francis - Played first half and was very good. Intercept marked a number of times, and helped set up some work out of defence (one kickout he did went well past the start of the centre square). Got beaten a couple of times by Daniher and Grimley, but he still hit packs hard. Very exciting but needs time to improve fitness.
Parish - Didn't feature heaps but was tidy when he had the ball. Ran through the midfield. His left foot kicking is very impressive for a right footer.
Morgan - modified training.
Redman - modified training.
Brown - Stood Sam Michael for a fair while. Didn't have a lot to do and didn't do a lot wrong.
Eades - modified training.
Hartley - Like Brown. Stood Edwards at times and did pretty well.
Gach - Great at centre bounces, and other than a strong mark in defence was quiet around the ground. Unfortunately did an injury with only a bit to go in the match and was helped off the ground. Hopefully it's minor.
Tippa - quiet first quarter but was one of the best on after that. Ran and carried regularly, and was one of the few that almost always hit a target going inside 50. Had one passage where he fought for the ball in a pack, dished out a poor handball, went back in and won the ball again and slipped a very clean handball through traffic to a player in space which ultimately set up a score. Like Parish, kicks very well on left too.
Wallis - Modified training.
Grima - Modified training.
Dempsey - Actually was pretty good. Played in a few positions, from what I could tell mostly up forward and along a wing. Ball use was occasionally scrappy, but mostly satisfactory. Snagged one or two smooth goals.
