Preseason Training 2011/12

Speaking of Freo Oval, I noticed when I was over recently that they were ripping up the turf. Is this just regular maintenance or have they realised it needs softening up.

Towards the end of the season when injuries hit the hardest, I recall Harvey saying they had the Freo Oval met the standard. Interesting to see if they actually found it wasn't up to scratch and kept it hush and only making the repairs now...

I wonder how much running will be done at McGillvary oval in the pre season. I heard the players prefer running on that surface. Is it softer under the feet? I have never been there before.

Depends on which part. There's a marked running track where the grass is cut short, whereas a lot of the rest of the ground it's pretty soft. No idea how it compares to Freo Oval though.

McGillvary oval is nice. West Coast were training there not 100m away at the same time last Pre-Season. It's gotta be good since other professional sporting clubs train there also.

It has to be the best grass ive ever played footy on. It is realy soft under feet and it doesnt hurt if you fall. However it is very hard to run on with sneakers as there is not much grip. Maybe the players wear their footy boots while running so they dont fall. Youre feet do hurt alot more after running in footy boots than sneakers. it could be the cause of last years injuries.

I'm going to ask a serious question...

Please do not have a go at me its just a question.

If Harvey was still getting WINS without our important players and we made Finals would we be talking about "over training" ???

Would his methods be an issue??

Even more so because finals are when we would want our full team out on the field.

his methods would definitely have been any issue. from the get go our season was bewildering, there didn't seem to be a game plan that allowed all players to play consistently to their positions and from early on it became apparent that we were playing as though in a holding pattern waiting for the stars to return, underscoring the lack of gameplan and the lack of faith shown to players. if harvey was getting wins without our important players, like the hawks managed to do, he would have kept his job, but instead we played a compromised game. i think that's the main reason he was fired.

That about sums up the reason for his demise...and his appalling media skills..

In case anyone wanted a link to that Hird article:

Basically saying we trained twice as much/hard as Essendon. More evidence that we (or should I say Harvey) created the injury mess. It was/is clear to many of us, but I'm sure the usual suspects still believe it was nothing more than bad luck.

This pre-season will be crucial, with Lyon's experience from St Kilda involved I feel much more comfortable.

Not sure on the timing of our injuries, but you would think the prolonged exposure (i.e throughout the season) to those numbers would be more of a factor in the injuries.

Running those numbers in football boots would obviously be far different than conventional running footwear though, which could be a factor perhaps?

I train there all the time and do multiple of my cross country events there. It is a very nice surface, quite soft, but luscious. There are areas of scuffed up turf, but overall it has the right amount of bounce and texture if you catch my drift.

If Lyon was not available, Harvey would still be coach. We would not have simply given him the flick, but with a clear upgrade available (and I thought that they were sounding Lyon out for the end of next season), the move was made.

that's true, but the penny dropped and we seized the opportunity when it presented itself, which is terrific. there is real intent for self actualisation in the club and that will spread to the playing group.

The timing in terms of our list is perfect I think. Waiting until the end of Harvey's contract could have been ugly. As it is, the list has shown something, had some time together, fallen back a little. Bring in a sharper focus and more committed gameplan and that is exciting.

I want Pav's big butt back!! With all the running involved in midfield training Pav lost his big rear end.

A small butt may be appealing on Pippa Middleton but for Pav I believe he lost his ability to wind up from outside 50.

Get him back closer to goal and get him in the gym doing some squats!

yeah, it would have been a drawn out saga with harvs. **** he could be excruciating with his cloak and daggers stuff sometimes. it's funny that stuff but can be a complete waste of energy.

how we play leading into the season will be interesting. i remember from this year's NAB cup the eventual top four started the year on the front foot, especially the eagles and hawks. the cats probably to a lesser extent than the other three. it didn't seem like they were piss farting around with experiments even at that early stage. hopefully we start as well, but we will probably take a while to warm up.

Does anyone have an updated list of who will be missing from the start of preseason training? I know a few of the lads had some minor cleanups etc done in the offseason. Be nice to start with the full squad out there.

Surely they can do the running work?

Handstand sprints and wheelbarrow races are totally out of the question though.
