I think we all know it's that time that all supporters dread.... the redevelopment stage. Hard to believe that we were in two GF's a only a few years back. But as much as I hate to admit we definately played above ourselves.
And it's not going to be easy with the way we recruit. Let's just hope we don't go the same way as we did in the mid '90's and just try to keep our head above water by picking up dodgy has beens and no hopers with a bit of experience.
I'll admit I'm more than a bit worried over where the pies are going over the next few years. :(

Above our selves = Played to our maximum potential

I don't think anyone can play better than they actually are.

But you know where I'm coming from.
After that we could only go down.

Agreed
And I do think we are in a re-building phase.
It will take us at least 2 years (after this year) to regain a place inside the top 8.
But EVERY team eventually has to do it, some may spend more time at the top than we did but that is primarily due to list management - something we turned out to be not that good at.

No team ever plays to their maximum potential. 2002/2003 we played close to our potential though as any team has got for a long time (perhaps Crows 97/98). However to say we got the most out of jsut about every player throughout the whole 2 seasons is rediculous. Tarrant's 2002 was poor, Rocca didn't stamp himself on 2003. O'Bree was poor both years and Jason Cloke a very important player for us in 2002 had a poor 2003.
We never had a winning ruckman, McKee was ok around the ground and in 2003 Fraser was an excellent roving ruckman. But we never won the hitouts.
Didak didn't burst on the scene straight away and Davis never had an impact.

As good as both 2002 and 2003 were for us we didn't play above ourselves/too our MAXIMUM potential. We just had a dream run with injuries, and a very even contribution from all areas of the ground.

I guess I will just shut up now

Fact is we never rebuilt we just topped ourselves up with some solid senior players (Wakelin, Clement etc) to add to our already solid core of Buckley, Burns, Rocca and Licuria who were ready to peak.

Looking at our drafting;

Fraser and Didak okay picks for what was available but have not developed well enough under Malthouse as they should have for their talent.

Johnson, Rowe, Maxwell types nice pickups for their numbers in the draft but they should be the cream on top not the success stories of our drafting.

Cole is typical of our inability to spot talent, best draft ever and he is really struggling as much as he was day one.

Then there is the black hole otherwise known as our recruiting in our GF years where we picked up absolutely no one of ability, and traded off a 1st round pick for Woey who has had it after 2 years of service.

To sum it up weve made the same mistakes as the 90s as we have overlooked the importance of good drafting and picked up players with obvious skill deficiencies which has killed us.

MM and Dudkins do not deserve to be there years end.

And this great coach who is going to replace MM is?
I don't care, but someone who'll change the game plan when it's not working, will drop blokes when they're not performing no matter how "senior" players they are, and will not try and recruit all his mates from his former club. And will employ someone in the recruiting area who actually knows what he's doing, and will employ an assistant coach or two who aren't purely yes-men.

If you don't care
What about Tony Shaw or Danny Frawley or perhaps Peter Rhode.
Yep there are heaps of good coaches out there.

People say give MM the boot, but as soon as someone asks who should we replace him with we get 'great' names like
Alves
McGuane
Crossisca
Lyon
Come on get real, none of them have done anything, while at the moment we are being coached by a two time premership coach

Or the other 'wonder' statement is that we should just go out and poach Pagan, Williams or Laidley - yep great idea because it is well known they are just sitting around waiting for an offer from Collingwood.

Get your collective heads out of your arses.

MM had a team in WCE that even i could have coached to more premierships than he did.
Its bloody hard to find 1 weak player in that line up.
But he still sucked everyone into beleiving he was a good coach.

You're right. We should just keep him, and let O'Bree, Williams, Lockyer, Woewodin, MOrrison and the rest of the Malthouse favourites lead us to multiple wooden spoons.
