Pressure acts

I doubt the Richmond forwards are being credited for pressure acts when they crumb the freebies. Confirms what we already suspected that our forward line needs to get far better at applying defensive rebound and stopping the rebound. We saw some decent signs in JLT with Gibbons, Cuningham and Polson. But we obviously need far more. Other than the goal Fasolo kicked, think everyone would be a little disappointed with what he produced.
I think a lot of what makes richmond good is their lack of pressure in the marking contest. They are passengers out the back way too often. You watch the replay and you’ll see countless Richmond players backing in the one tall to spoil the 2-3 Carlton players in the air only to be the only players on the ground. They are soft players who couldn’t get their own ball to save themselves. I think we need to start having players just punch it forwards/out of bounds or leave most players on the ground. I think the term is called down hill skiing. This is the reason I don’t think Richmond will be as dominant as everyone is predicting this year. We will be better for the run and realise we were really in it up to our eye balls. I so thought we would run over the top of them in the last they were rubbish.

Round 2
Gibbons - 33
Setterfield - 31
Cripps - 29
Fisher - 24
Dow - 22

Another impressive Gobbons game. Best on ground for pressure. Goes along with his 11 disposals and 6 tackles. The snap along the ground with the realisation of how much time he had he could of got the goal too.

Setters with 12 disposals 4 tackles and a goal is simmering along nicely.

Elite rebound 50s, spoils, intercepts. Are we prepared to swap this for O’Brien or JSOS?

Exaclty. Doing the defensive things fairly well. His preparedness to tackle was a highlight for me. That one on one wrap up of a charging gray at the stoppage in our d50 was brilliant and saved a goal many of our players would've conceded. Enjoying his game..

You should put this in the game review thread as well, if you haven't already.

He needs to improve his disposal efficiency, pressure acts and metres gained which are below average for his position and he will then turn from whipping boy to star in all Carlton people’s eyes. Lets see what he does v Sydney and GC before willo, Marchbank, O’Brien and JSOS come in for him.

I would make that swap for LOB or JSOS in a second. That tackle you're talking up was nothing special. Garlett didn't have to move anywhere, full body into body. Gray ran straight into Garlett. If Garlett has to stick his arms out to attempt a tackle, they wont' stick.

Lob would've been bulldosed, JSos hasn't the speed that Garlett has either. Need to think of Garlett's game differently. As a negating small defender he hasn't lost his matchup yet this season, offensively he certainly could provide more.

2 things he simply must eliminate from his game:

- grubby kicks/punches out of defensive 50 back into the corridor, these must be toward the boundary, must

- high tackles in defensive 50 leading to shots on goal, these are momentum killers

Yeah - although he's not the only one who needs to learn how to spoil effectively, at the moment I'd only class Weitering as an effective spoiler. Jones is haphazard and just punches it wherever he can, plowman runs under it or his spoils go 12cm straight to crumbers.

The tackling is something he'll learn. Thats not an end of the world unfixable problem.

What were the small fwd pressure acts nos yesterday ?

Watching the game live they were almost non existent , Polson Gibbons & Setterfield ...... witches hats !!

Polson & Gibbons - 1 tackle each.

4 possessions & 1 tackle per player. Not good now, is it?
Nope, wasn't saying it was. Pressure acts seem to me like a silver medal award... You weren't quite fast enough or you didn't quite read the play well enough. But you were close here's a pressure act.

Meanwhile the defender rebounded and started a scoring chain for the opposition.

Putting a hand on a player can be classified as a pressure act.
Means little unless there is a positive effect for the endeavours.
Sad, we've reduced the output of a player based not on goal assists and kicking goals, but for pressure acts.

Pressure acts should be only one part of the equation and not the equation in whole.
Think we agree , they were not getting the ball themselves at least they can tackle shepherd block DO SOMETHING !!

Cripps - 30
Walsh - 23
SPS - 20
Lobbe - 18
Dow - 16

Surprisingly it’s cripps (lol) Walsh and arguably daylight. Cripps is the best player in the AFL by some way. No one wise could do what he does in a side like ours. He’s a superstar. If we’d won twice as many games in 2018 he’d be s browbloe medallist. If we win 10 (doubtful) in 2019 he WILL be one. Hopefully he’s still at his best when we are contending coz he will win many Charlie’s.

Weitering and Walsh played career best games. Jones best this year. He was ****ing everywhere. If our younger midfielders can get their act together we will be something special. Kruezer for Lobbe adds 5-10%. Cuningham for casboult adds another and Kennedy for Dow, JSOS for O’Brien is the necessary changes we need to keep building.

This loss hurts. It hurts the supports and the players are in pain. This will be their line in the sand.

Top 5 so far
Cripps (5th in AFL)
Walsh (16th in AFL)
Settetfield (24th in AFL)
Dow
Fisher

Some interesting stats - from the top 25 players in the AFL.
Cripps (12th in disposals)
McGovern (17th for goals)
Weitering (5th one percenters)
Newman (4th rebound 50s)
Cripps (1st centre clearances)
Cripps (1st contested possessions)
Weitering (4th intercepts)
Newman (8th metres gained)
Murphy (23rd metres gained)
Walsh (25th for turnovers)
Weitering (3rd intercept marks)
Jones (24th intercept marks)
McKay (12th marks in50)
Cripps (7th score launches)
Weitering (4th spoils)
Jones (10th spoils)
Cripps (1st tackles) - ****ing wow
Cripps (1st total clearances)

I feel so good writing these ones:

And not surprised

Kruezer - 22
Cripps - 21
Walsh - 21
Gibbons - 19
JSOS - 18

Two of the five are new to blue 2019. 2 are forwards that work their arse off for the shirt.

Here’s to bigger things. Pressure acts won’t be as important once we start controlling the ball more. Teams will be measured on their pressure from now on as we’ll have ball more than them.
