Michael Clarke for for me , watching him as a youngster was the reason I fell in love with cricket.

Odd one but used to love Michael Vaughan. Similar to Clarke, he was always a ball or two away from having his stumps sent cartwheeling, which made it harder to turn away from viewing. A great timer of the ball, sexy on the pull shot.

You forget because Faf plays one of the great innings on day 5 but there wouldn't be many more dominate displays of batting than Australia on this day. They finished 5/482 at the end of day 1 (only 86.5 overs bowled too) against an attack featuring Steyn and Morkel (and Imran Tahir but we'll gloss over that).

They finished 5/482 at the end of day 1 (only 86.5 overs bowled too) against an attack featuring Steyn and Morkel (and Imran Tahir but we'll gloss over that).

That first day was one of those ones where you walk out of the ground at stumps wondering what the f*** you've just seen.

i think in the 1995 series on a dodgy deck over there he finally yielded and wore one, and it was greeted as basically the ultimate sign that the pitch was a minefield

i remember showing up for day 3 of the test in Sydney where he and Laxman made a thousand on day two.

tendulkar only added maybe 20 on day 3 but four of them came off a Lee thunderbolt -like 154-155km/h - and I just shook my head that someone could be so still and hit the ball to the boundary back past the bowler so effortlessly

I’ve read a lot of feature pieces on some of those guys and it is fascinating and very very sad at the same time. Very very complex issue and hard to take a definitive stance on it but regardless I have a lot of sympathy for the guys that went and were never the same again. I’ll have to track it down

Might just be the bias and the lack of a particularly eye catching current West Indian specialist batsman but Jason Holder looks beautiful when he’s in good nick. All his drives look like practice swings.

A definitive stand is impossible to come to. As a kid in the anti Apartheid movement there was no middle ground, these guys were sell outs in every respect and only to be condemned. Age has certainly softened that and it's hard not to be moved by some of the stories and empathise with their position but my experience in the 80s and knowing what South Africa was like for a black man back then I still think they were wrong to go but I can understand why they went and believe that some of them suffered unduly for what they did.

I was overseas in Borneo and missed this whole series. Couldn't believe what I was reading when I finally got to check the scores for this game.

Gilly for me. His timing and bat swing was sublime. The flick shot of the pads which would go for 6 always amazed me. At times, he made batting look effortless.

Gower was the most stylish batsman I've seen.

I had the privilege of seeing him live in an ODI between NZ and England at the WACA, seeing him unleash his cover drive was worth the price of admission alone.

Stephen Fleming was the Kiwi equivalent, he wasn't quite in Gower's class though.
