The players who've played well in the VFL have been giving an opportunity in the AFL when the same role they play at VFL level became vacant due to injury or form.

Playing a kid or too won't have a huge detrimental effect on our team performance. None of the newbies have cost us a game this year. Keep blooding them off the back of good VFL form.

If we don't play finals it won't be because we played some youngsters.

Development year for me. Finals will still be on the radar, but I think we will be better placed to challenge in the next few years. Getting games into our youngsters will be pricless for that time. Getting a finals game into them will probably accelerate development but the bigger picture of 2016 onwards is vital.

Look at the kids in the side, it's pretty clear I reckon they are developing these kids nicely but also believe our side is also good enough to play finals.
I'd expect the kids to come in and out of the side if they start to hit the wall, injuries or form, for the rest of the year with a couple more to come in as well hopefully.

Seems to be working so far doing both at 5th on the ladder with 3/4 of the 2014 National draft pickups have playing a game at senior level so far. The pies average age last game for the 22 against the Hawks was 3.5 years less than there 22.

All year I've been telling myself "its a development year" and we've been winning games and looking good in patches. Now we've been more than competitive in 2 benchmark games, I can console myself if we miss out by knowing the kids are getting games and experience. But gee I'm starting to get a burn going. When we got in front against the Hawks it felt like 2010 again...

Its coming and its gonna be HUGE

Bucks often sais he picks the best 22 for the game... Not so sure the whole concept of development year vs finals exists in his and the selection committee's mind? You might argue that injured players have/are taking their time to come back into side due to Bucks being happy with the opportunity to play the kids and having a fit 22 > individual player mindset.

Who would they leave out of the side if it was a development year? The only player I would think fits this concept is Young, playing in the VFL and might not play on next year due to his career nearing the end. the other one's getting on are Toovey and Swannie, can't see swannie being given a rest, although toovey maybe.

Moore's inclusion for structure and it worked well... Lake can't handle cloke on his own. Was either Gault or Moore and Moore performed well on Spangher in the VFL.

Maynard earned the call up through VFL form and being the best available for the structure we had.

It is a development year. And it is going great! Would hope with our percentage we could win the 4 games necessary and sneak in.

The best part is our game plan and playstyle will hold up well in finals. Just keep developing the team and see where it takes us.

It's amazing what happens when injuries dont destroy half the team.

Both, bucks will still play Scharenburg sometime this season and also continue with Moore, but also bringing in Greenwood, Sinclair etc to bolster the more experience in the side.

This.

You win your position in the side on merit. List management on older player is something that should be done at the end of the season (not mid season).

Finals, what better way to develop your players by playing finals footy, current line up has more then enough young talent to see flourish. Can't wait to see how we play come September.

Development year, I think the side is good enough that playing the likes of Moore and Maynard won't be the difference whether we play finals or not. Developing them now might be the difference of top next year though.

Anyone changed their mind and now think it is a development year?
It's always been that.. we debuted 2 kids against the best in the business in finals like pressure and top 4 on the line when we could have gone for experience like Dwyer

Time to bring this back up.

Now we are officially out of the finals race. I don't think it's been a particularly bad year, and I have a lot of hope for the future, but as Carey likes to say "you can't keep having "honourable losses".

From here I think it might be time to consider putting the cue in the rack.

Pendles is clearly carrying something - I would rest him from here.
I am always nervous about Reid... not sure how much we achieve if we keep playing him in the 1sts. Any form he gains won't roll into next year, and each game adds a bit more to his risk of having another injury.
Is something up with Trav's calf? Starting very strongly tonight but then really slowed down in the second half. (really, last 3 quarters).
Brown's about to have a 1-3 week forced break.

I'd strongly consider resting these guys (plus a few others) and just using the last 3 to play as many youngsters as we can. (Which we are already doing - but there's always a few guys missing out).

The question is moot really.....we've been at the development stage for the most part of the year. Being 8-3 was amazing but it was irrelevent to what is really happenning atm...

Just keep pumping games into the kids, some we'll win....some we'll lose....every game will teach them something more. And in a couple of years we'll be where the Bulldogs are.....but with substantially better forwards!

Don't see the point in sending a team full of kids out there to get thumped.

How is that good for development?

The best way to develop our kids is to do exactly what we're already doing ...

... Have good mix of experience and developing players.
