Name me one club where two players in the best 22 have had to retire prematurely. In the same year.
These are not run of the mill injuries any club has. And while the club may have been incompetent in managing issues in the past, that's a discussion for other issues; this is so much of an extraordinary situation that I'm surprised you can't see it.
Players are retiring prematurely each year.
Best 22 or not best 22.
Ben Griffiths is one example from last year.
Unfortunately that is our game.
So no, I don’t see it.
At best you could argue we’ve been unlucky.
But luck is not the basis for special assistance.

I understood your point.
I was just trying to put the basis in to context.
Sorry for the obscure Man U reference, that didn’t help, but I see Noidenous has explained it.

Cool mate all good! And I do agree that the 'Oliver Twist' look should be avoided at all costs.

Good idea, but I feel like there's less margin for error in getting a low draft pick, in terms of ROI.

Also the way we're travelling at the minute, I'm not sure all the subsidies in the land are going to lure the best off field talent.

I don't think you can necessarily 'buy' a cohesive, well led, innovative off field team or culture. This needs to evolve, it's more complex than luring across a 'gun' coach.

You can however 'buy' (~get one low in the draft) a gun player.
I agree that buying won't guarantee success automatically. However if you are able to appoint the right people in the right positions, this can have a flown on effect in terms of driving higher standards, shaping culture, luring high calibre coaches and being appealing to F.As.

Look no further to the influence Roos had during his time at the Dees. He helped to lift the veil of negativity hanging over the club for a long time. Barassi coaching the swans was a watershed moment in shaping the bloods culture that has made the swans one of the strongest teams over the past two decades.

JB: see my reply to St C.
And yes: begging is what it is.
Sorry to differ.
Begging is going cap in hand to the AFL for special assistance because of our own incompetence.
The incompetence of the AFL , is a partial cause of our predicament , so why shouldn't we get what we can. We shouldn't be haunted by the past , we should be determined to improve our club any way we can , without repeating some mistakes of the past made by our club and others. If we are not deserving of the assistance , we won't get it. It appears we are slowly getting it together off field now , perhaps the review of our Football Operations by Lethlean can do the same for the Football Department.

Early medical retirement of two best 22 players should certainly be the basis for a priority pick. If two players died in a car crash the AFL would consider and probably give a priority pick. No difference.

I think you are right. When Troy Broadbridge sadly lost his life , Melbourne were a player short and given some kind of player compensation. Whilst that situation was tragically different to ours , the basis for player compensation is the same.

Maybe we need to create a supplements crisis. Worked well for the injectors.
It didn't really.
They were able to put games into the kids, but we are doing that now.
They got a few early draft picks, but they dont seem to be setting the world on fire.
The dodo really bombed the Carlisle trade.
They also lost a couple of their best players in Jake and Ryder because of it.

It seems psychological with them. They feel the hate from the general population. The AFL gave them a draw that should have had them top 4 and they shat the bed.

I brought this up in another thread and it would only be based on two particular players being finished: Roberton and McCartin.

At quarter time in Round 4 Robbo was fine. It could be possible that five minutes after that, our All-Australian squad, 2nd in the B&F 194cm defender could be finished, due to what can only be honestly described as a non-football injury.

If you coupled that with the retirement of McCartin, a #1 pick who never got a good run at it due to multiple, regular concussions, that would be the basis for a request for a priority pick. Armo is 29 and Koby was always a #15-25 player on the list, regardless of how we think about him.

I don't want a priority pick, but Brisbane received one in part because of an inability to retain players. They could have kept Jack Crisp if they had traded Aish for Beams and pick 5. There's enough mismanagement in their story to sully any claim for a priority pick.

If Robbo and Paddy are done at the end of the year we should ask for one. If you don't ask you don't get.

Having said that, I hope both are fine and hope to see Robbo back in a Saints jumper soon, and hopefully Paddy can finally get a clear run at it now and start really stringing some good games together.

I agree with this Punter, but I'd put in a request if it is solely Robbo and Koby. Robbo's AA form plus the total non-football nature of it is enough to ask the question - Koby is kind of icing on the cake of the request.

"We lost two mid-career best 22 players, one of them AA - that needs a priority pick and we'll still be behind as we replace those two with a raw 18 year old"

Gerard Healy (during ‘On the Couch’) raised the idea of an early 2nd RDP for clubs who have not played finals for 5 years. This concession would continue until the club plays finals.

Based on the current ladder the four clubs to benefit would be BL, StK, Carl and GC. They showed a graphic on how it would apply based on this year’s picks and it looked like a reasonable mechanism.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Healy was floating a ‘live’ idea of the AFLs. Just a hunch of my part.

The AFL was more equitable when there were automatic priority picks, but they were shelved because of media noise.

Again shows the immaturity of the AFL community at large.

Absolutely zero zero zero chance this happens. Why it’s even a discussion is beyond me. You have to be at absolute rock bottom for this... we just lost to first on the ladder in Perth by 2 goals and priority pick is a talking point? A team needing a priority pick would lose that game and the Richmond game by 100+.

Even if we lost Robbo, Paddy and Koby to concussion it’d be debatable.

Yeah and between 2004-2018 we have been in 3 grand finals, however many finals series like okay all these clubs have had assistance but we knew GWS and Gold Coast were going to get that, Melbourne were on the verge of folding... I really don’t think it’s that bad that we need afl assistance. We aren’t languishing at the bottom of the ladder every year, we’ve been closer to making finals than not the past two seasons, they aren’t going to give us assistance.

Yeah and between 2004-2018 we have been in 3 grand finals,

This infers we could have won three premierships. It's a misleading trope designed to make the club sounds more hopeless than they are. We played in two grand finals - one of them took eight quarters. Only two flags on offer.

End communication.

No between 2004 and 2010 we were in 5 PF's and competed for the flag in 2009 and 2010.

Yeah, but just imagine if we had've won both Grand Finals in 2010

Yeah correct, my overall point being within the 8 years of no finals etc we have had the first and third pick in the draft, just last year two top 10 picks in the draft, honestly I don't see why this is a talking point, has it been even mentioned until this season? no.

If we had another season or two more seasons like this then okay, maybbbbbeee just maybbbbeee we look into it. Right now it's just a pointless discussion because it isn't going to happen and it's unrealistic.

I'm not making the club sound more hopeless than it is either at all so don't tell me I am, I'm merely making the point that the idea of a priority pick for a team who is having a bad year after being on the cusp of finals the last two is simply ridiculous.

8 years compared to some of the other teams is nothing....you honestly believe we should get a priority pick? Like it's that bad?
