I know this is a touchy subject AND I will probably get bagged for asking buttttt.

How does the priority pick work? I cant remember last year. You dont have to finish bottom do you? how do they work out who gets the priority pick?????

From what I remember melbourne or richmond were robbed last year by carlton, even though they didnt finish bottom.

If a club has less than 5 wins for the year then they receive an extra pick after the first round, i.e around pick 17 (depending on how many clubs finish with less than 5)... If a club has less than 5 wins two years in a row, then they receive the first pick in the draft, like Carlton did last year ahead of richmond.

But i think we will win too many matches to qualify for it anyway. We will probably beat WC, Melb and will be a chance of the remaining 10 matches to beat teams like richmond, carl etc.

Clubs winning no more than four games in a season will be eligible for a priority pick taken after the completion of the first round of the national draft.

If the club has successive poor years of no more than 16 points in each of those seasons — not averaged over the course of those seasons — the priority pick will be taken, before the national draft.

From what we have seen so far this year, how can you say that especially richmond and carlton? We are a very strong chance for the priority pick. And at the moment, we desperately need all the picks we can get.

So I should just look it but i am lazy. How many games did we win last year? What about melbourne? how many games did they win last year??

We won too many , pretty sure we where 10-12 last year and i think Melbourne won 4 so they are on track for the first two picks in the draft.

nah I think Melbourne's win against Carlton in the last round last year put them on too many wins for the first round PP.

I wanna know what happens, hypothetically, were we to win less than 5 games this year and next year with the new teams entrance. Obviously I don't want to be in that situation, but given we specifically were shafted by the changing of the PP rule last time, it would be interesting to know how that would work

Nah, Melbourne don't qualify as they beat Carlton in the Kruezer Cup which put them on 5 wins, if Richmond win one more game nobody gets a first round priority.

Very good question that, i to would like to know the answer, if we did end up in that position I would argue we would get pick 1 as it comes before the first round of picks....but with the AFL..who knows.

Is it actually 4 wins or less 2 years running or 8 over two years for the no. 1 pick? Melbourne winning 5 last year becomes irrelevant if they only win 1 or 2 this year if that's the case, but I don't think it is

Win 16 points or less first year = PP AFTER the first round

Win 16 points or less second year in a row = PP BEFORE the first round.

Win any more than 16 points in any year you lose the PP and you start from scratch again.

Didn't we get a priority pick on Jetta?
Come to think of it the 2006 draft was incredible for Essendon! lol
Jetta, Gumbleton, Reimers, Houli and Davey I think.

Good year. Exactly why the saying "short term pain for long term gain" is so true in today's football. I'd rather come 2nd last than 10th. What on earth is the point of 10th- miss out on finals, miss out on the top kids in the draft!

you can add Hislop to that roll call also.

One point though - whilst I'm happy with Jetta, and we were lucky to get such a good kid so low; how would you have liked to have picked up Gumbleton with pick 2 and Joel Selwood with pick 4?

That's what would have happened if we'd had the same rules as the decade before, but it was our bad luck to have our shocker the year the AFL changed the PP rules.

The most important take-away is that draft picks are over-rated; winning isn't

True, it would have been great to get 2 picks in the top 5 under the previous system. Unfortunate for Essendon. Only thing that calms me is the thought that we may just get lucky with Neagle under the father/son rule. Sure it is the same rule every club gets, but he certainly looks very promising and for pick 39 or whatever we got him for it may turn out to be an absolute bargain. AFL do owe us because we were the club shafted under the new rules but I can look passed it if Neagle turns out to our next FF.
Also conversely where you say it was our bad luck to finish at the bottom that year, it could be said that it was great luck to finish 2nd last in the year of the superdraft. I feel that we will look back as that draft as the cornerstone to possible future successes. Jetta with our PP was great and we got Houli and Reimers with 40+ picks. :thumbsu: to Dodora.

Wise up man, the AFL dont owe us anything. We shot ourselves in the foot. We have to get out of this on our own.

Exactly, Jetta and Gumby have been close to our least effectual pair from that draft....

WIN games at all costs! No excuses!!
