You will probably get a priority pick but it wont be pick 1. Pick 1 is reserved for us. In the best case you will get pick 2 and 3 in the worst your early pick and one at the end of round 1.

There has already been an uproar about Melbourne getting another priority pick, if they made it pick 1 there would be anarchy.

You're right. It's better that a club established 150 years after us gets pick 1 to make sure that all of that history doesn't go to waste, and so that they can add to their ridiculous amount of high draft picks that the AFL has already gifted them wrapped up with a nice, little bow.

You don't need it. We need it.

Think you'll find the pick will be determined by the preexisting rules, the afl wont even get a choice. All the can choose is whether or not they give it and the guidelines look after it from there. It doesn't matter where you finish unfortunately. I am not sure of the qualifying rules though. Is it 12 or 15 wins in 3 years? I may be wrong of course.

The AFL can apply it and also decide where is falls. You guys were compensated for Scully and used that to get Hogan who looks like a freak. With him and Aish, another year for Toumpas and Viney and some other good young kids you have the genesis of a good team. With a new coach guiding them (hopfully Williams who is a gun) you will improve heaps.

The blokes making comments about history, fetch me a violin, it's in the past and can't be used as a constant excuse. If we continually mess up our recruitment I will expect the same treatment but we need the chance to walk and that means high draft picks.

Incorrect.

The new formula isn't public, and is also unrelated to the old rules.

Priority draft selections could still be granted in future under the discretion of the commission.

Anderson said a formula would be developed that will take into account such factors as:
  • a club’s premiership points over a period of years (with greater weight to recent seasons),
  • a club's percentage over a period of years as another indication of on-field competitiveness (with greater weight to recent seasons),
  • any finals appearances in recent seasons,
  • any premierships in recent seasons,
  • club injury rates in each relevant season.

Under the old rules, if you finished with four wins or less, you received a PP between the first and second round. If you won less 4 games or less for two seasons in a row, you got a pick before the start of the first round (so #1).

So yes, under the old rules we qualify, but the old rules don't apply anymore. Yes, there is a very strong argument that we deserve one under the new formula, but it's still up to the AFL to decide. They may just say "tough t***ies" and not give us anything.

I personally think priority picks are bullsh*t, the AFL should get rid of them all together. You can't build a team off 1 extra player, you need to draft well in the first, second, third and fourth rounds. To win a premiership you need a list of about 25-30 quality players. The clubs that draft and develop the best over a long period will end up winning premierships and not the clubs that got an extra player one year.

But in saying that, Aish and Freeman thanks.

We weren't compensated for the 2 years of development we put into him though, it still set us back significantly.

Go away!
You no nothing about our history btw Melbourne will taste success before the suns and the giants.

No way that would be the case if we can get our midfield on the right track.

Melbourne got themselves into this mess, the AFL shouldn't have to get them out.

Why not?

As I said, it's not like other clubs haven't been in positions where they've received more assistance than we have, or would, even if you include any prospective PP this year.

So I seriously don't see what "the right example" means in this context either.

Especially with interstate teams having received massive draft, salary cap and direct financial assistance, the two franchises of course, and Sydney, and Brisbane having received all manner of assistance outside of that, including the ability to have an enlarged squad. And West Coast, IIRC, having received three priority picks prior to this point.

And six Melbourne clubs having all received two PPs or more, half of them having received three of them.

If we were an interstate side in such a dire on-field situation, of course, there'd be far more concessions and resources pumped into us from the AFL, certainly including more than one PP, amongst other things, and the vast majority of people would accept that as a normal and expected outcome.

Another very good point here mate :thumbsu:

One. first round pick would've been plenty of compensation for Scully. Two picks was overs. That's enough compensation for the 2 years of "development" we put into him.

Your bullish optimism is... well... optimistic.

Given the strength of our forward line and our backline, it seems like a logical enough call to me.

So you think their forwards and backs would be better than ours... so much so that you think this is an obvious conclusion?

Can't really see the basis for that statement either.

If Melbourne did get the number 1 pick in this draft how would you feel about the following:
Trade pick 1 to the Suns for David Swallow (allows them to take Boyd)
Trade pick 3 to Crows for Sloane (they may get Aish at this pick)
Trade Watts to Carlton for pick 11
Trade pick 11 to GWS for Adams.

If Choco ends up being your coach you might even get Martin.

Midfield of Swallow, Martin, Viney, Sloane, Adams, Jones looks scary.

Would certainly fix the midfield problem.

Only trade i see not going through would be the Sloane one as i think Adelaide would view him as untouchable.

Yeah, I think this is a very good idea. Hopefully we do get a PP at pick 1, so all the elements are possible.

And even if we don't get Sloane for pick 3, I'm confident we could get someone just about as good otherwise in midfield from a deal for that pick. Especially with the Bulldogs as desperate as they are to strengthen their forward line and backline.

If we can get Jurrah back with us and he's fully committed, it'd make it somewhat easier for us to trade Watts in a scenario like this also.

We can only dream, would add Toumpas in there aswell. Would be a complete 180 degree turnaround if it were to happen.

The only other thing is we wouldn't get Martin for nothing, he doesn't come to Melbourne just because of Choco..
