Little real basis behind that angst though, it's fair to say.

If a club in the state we're in on the field doesn't merit a PP, then no-one else would ever have a case to receive one.

I dont give a tinkers cuss what other clubs think about the prospect of us receiving a Priority Pick

Priority Picks are meant for clubs in the state that we find ourselves in - Plain and Simple

Mind you - Vlad might ask to pick the player attached to the priority pick given our recent history in getting them, mostly wrong. :rolleyes:

Of course they have no problem with their teams receiving those picks. You'll never ever hear fans from elsewhere complaining about the picks they've been given. Only complaints about us receiving them.

And you forgot to add the five first-round picks and nine "zone/concession" picks Sydney got during the mid-90s.

Exactly right mate. And as I say, there's an awful lot of wilful blindness going on about that issue within certain quarters in any case.

Another clear flaw in the rationalisation used by some to justify bias on that issue, that's for sure.

Aside from the point, as many of us have highlighted previously of course, that there are at least seven other clubs - including Carlton, obviously - who positioned themselves in similar fashion for draft picks over the last decade and half. Yet we were the only ones singled out.

And clubs talking about how we didn't deserve concessions because we brought this upon ourselves fail to acknowledge that Sydney hadn't won a flag since the 1930s, and took until 2005 to do it anyway regardless of what the AFL gave them.

I'm not going to get my hopes up for a PP, even though it'd be really exciting as a Demons supporter (though I'm sick of draft day being our only source of excitement each year).

I am however of the belief that we are the paradigm for what position a side would need to be in to receive a PP, given that under the previous system we'd be getting one without having tanked (two consecutive years with >16.5 points) and under the new one we fit into the mould of an absolute train wreck in terms of performance over the last 7 years collectively. The other clubs complaining seem to have forgotten that up until the 2006 draft any team that finished with fewer than 20 points received a PP, which was a ridiculous and completely unreasonable situation in comparison to where we sit now. It's the reason that St Kilda were able to draft Rooey and Kosi, Carlton got Murphy and JJK, Collingwood got Pendles and Thomas, Richmond got Deledio and Tambling, the Hawks got Roughead and Franklin and we got Sylvia and Toothpaste (among many other cases). Given how influential these pairs have been for their respective clubs, they have no good reason to vilify the AFL, let alone us, should we receive one.

Whether or not we need one is a whole other debate, but having faced nothing but heartbreak since we lost to Freo in the 2006 semi-final I sure as hell ain't gonna complain if we do get one. And if we do win a flag from these concessions I will laugh all the way to the bank and not think twice about it.

Paul Roos said he thinks you should get a first round PP.

His justification was a little hard to follow, he basically went on a tangent about not wanting another kreuzer cup and he supports the process of the AFL's feeling when awarding PP's instead of looking at how many wins they may end up with.

Overall, I sensed he wants you guys to be awarded a first round PP for some reason.

That reason is unclear...

He also gave your list a big wrap when comparing it to St Kilda, saying you just need to find a midfield.

TBH I think he'll consider taking the job if you get picks 1 and 2/3 this year. It's a good opportunity for him to be heralded a genius by inheriting a pretty talented list with a few more talented mids coming at the end of the year.

You could win 9-10 games next year if this happens.

Lets not get carried away here, there is still plenty of work to be done! I do love your optimism though, both on your comments and your profile name ;)

Terry Wallace brought hope to the rfc in 2005 and we won quite a few games (started 7-2) so Paul Roos could inspire an even better turn around considering the talent you've already got.

If you get picks 1 and 3 this year, I'd say things are looking very good.

Richmond were the same as you 3 years ago, so I've seen this before... Things really do change pretty quickly in the current environment.

I agree with you that things can turn around quickly and no doubt a few top picks and great game plan and plenty of work on skills and fitness over the pre season we will be able to be much more competitive next season. Although i'm still not sure on the 9 - 10 game figure, It would be safe to say most of us fans would like to see us win 5-6 games and be competitive in pretty much every other game.

To me that would signal that things are changing and we are heading in the right direction.

Yep Roos knows the AFL wants him to take the Melbourne job so he is telling them he will consider coaching us if they were to give us the priority pick.

After reading this I withdraw my reservations about getting a Priority Pick ... The aforementioned clubs seem to have no shame either.

F**k em ... if it means us getting ahead, then so be it, no point sitting down the bottom if we dont have to.

It would be nice to be hated than pitied for a change ;)
 
Gillon basically said it was happening on game day just passed. Jackson must be very persuasive. Hopefully he can get us and going again. Put Melbourne in the 8 and watch the bandwagon supporters come from everywhere. We will have regular large crowds again. Everyone wins.

Every team has them, why not us too.

Its a huge credit that we got to 32k members considering the last 7 & particularly the last 3 seasons.

As for the PP I look at it like this:

Do I want the pick?: No
Do I want to be in the position to get this pick?: No
Do I think that if a club is going this bad they deserve it?: Yes
Would I begrudge another club in this position getting it?: No
Will I complain if we get it?: No
 
I was originally against getting a priority pick but as Jackson outlined, we are an impediment to the competition. We can't draw crowds, plain and simple. Whilst other clubs may cry foul, we are out right worst in the league and I'm sure there are many statistics to back that up.
 
Just give us ten or fifteen more priority picks in 2014. Why not. Sooner or later we will nail them.

An avalanche of fans from the snow. I have started to give this some thought. We have nothing to lose. If we get a priority pick opposition club supporters will hate us. They already hate us anyway because we are so shite. Then when we are better it will be all forgotten.
 
I've decided I want one just to watch the massive meltdown on the main board.

I say this for the health of the game as a competition.
In future, if another Club is in such a position, I would hope they would receive similar assistance.

each team has the right to ONE big handout/chance or whatever you'd like to call it.

I'm not sure a priority pick is the answer, but I'm not completely against you getting something in this area.

As a port supporter who has also seen some tough times recently (during the expansion club entry) it could be argued that on our past 3 seasons (16 wins a piece) we could have been in the same boat. Lets face it, without the expansion clubs coming in over the past 3 years while both our clubs have been down and not received access to high picks, the likes of Coniglio, Patton, O'mera etc would most likely be on our lists.

However our turnaround this season hasn't been due to priority picks, its involved some smart trading and selection. Out trades this year targeted borderline players from strong clubs (Stevenson/Heath) and smart work with our free agent players. Lost Pearce/Chaplin and replaced with Neade (rising start this week) and Hombsch (looks like he may get a nod some time this season) from GWS, and selected Tom Clurey whos playing well in the SANFL.

To be honest, you could receive 2 priority picks this season, but if you get the coaching appointment wrong, it will mean little. The clubs first focus should be to get the off field structures sorted, starting with the head coach and football department in general. I'm guessing most of you if given the choice between Paul Roos as coach next year, or a couple priority picks would take Roos ?

Now I don't think you will get Roos, but all the clubs energy should be (and I expect it is based on recent news articles) on getting the coaching setup and board room right.

In terms of extra picks, the one issue you face is bringing more young kids in are not going to turn things around quickly. What if you were given two (relatively high picks) which could not be used by you, but needed to be traded. Lets say a pick at the start and end of the first round. Surely there would be some clubs around keen on that #1 pick which would be prepared to offer you a ready to go top line player ?

Other ways to do it to appease others may be to get a pick or picks this year, but they are effectively on loan, and the club had to forfeit a corresponding round pick over the next 5 years. It gets you up and running now, but in the long run you haven't gained anything.

Of course the club also should have cap space so hitting the Free Agency market is another option.

Its unfortunate you are such a narrow minded supporter and all you can concentrate on is when other teams have played finals. Its quite obvious the internet connection in Thailand is as shotty as their DEET cocktails and you should accept the fact that the AFL should not reward a team for shotty decision making at the draft table and an incompetance within its board structure.
