Is there a case for Prismall to take over Stanton's spot in the midfield, esp for us to be a serious threat in the coming years. His disposal is so much cleaner and only 2 games in has impressed me big time. Stanton gets tagged out of games too easily and apart from his ridiculous 3rd qtr last night ill go out on the limb and say he has been nothing more than satisfactory the last few weeks. I'll admit that i dont watch as many games as you guys so i could be way off here but for us to be really a dangerous threat we need a more damaging, precise outside midfielder like Prismall.

Dont get me wrong i'm a big fan of Stanton but it's so frustrating seeing him carry and then over kick into the fwd line. Kicking high consistently tells me his disposal isn't quite there. He's improved, we all know that but he'll never be elite, Prismall could be.

I know Stanton is loved here and we're all optimistic but for us to be a real threat, i think Prismall is our man.

I know my post is gonna be nitpicked and i might have even made a spelling mistake but if anyone can share some thoughts on this id love to hear them. Telling me i spelt something wrong is not a response :D

Re: Let me put this to you

I still think theres improvement left in his disposal. He's shown how much he's improved his kicking since we drafted him but consistency is the key.

Having said that, I've got the feeling Prismall will be a more damaging player in the long run but we definitely have room for both.

Re: Let me put this to you

Interesting listening to the radio on my way home last night one of the announcers(can't remember who) saying that it was a good thing that Prismall moved to Essendon because he wouldn't be getting a game at Geelong. As good as Geelong are surely Prismall would be in their top 22. Thoughts?

Re: Let me put this to you

You'd think he'd have to be but where would he play? Ablett Selwood Corey Ling, Bartel in parts now, that's one hell of a midfield rotation to try and squeeze into.

I guess we could always play both but with Jobe and Welsh or Hocking or whoever's tagging they'd have to rotate more than anything else. Not a bad problem to have i suppose.

Re: Let me put this to you

They are both in the side. I don't see a stage at which they are both fit and we are choosing between the two.

Prismall will end up copping the tag as the more important playe because he gets his own ball and seems a better kick.

What you wll find with Stanton (I won't let this go until it changes) is that he is a fair-weather player. When the heat is on he is out of the game. When we are going well he gets his hand on the ball. Stanton has been average against all of the good sides we have played and has been tagged out of the game each time a player has gone to him. We can draw a comparison with Monfries who is the exact opposite. Angus has played all his best games on a Friday or Saturday night against a good opposition and then (frustratingly) drifts out of games against the weaker sides. I know which scenario I prefer.

Re: Let me put this to you

prismall, welsh, watson, mcveigh, lovett, winderlich, stanton all rotating through the middle with ryder and next year big hille. plus all the youngsters coming through, longeran, zaharakis.

i'm excited Big Kev style

I don't think that is true at all. He's proven that over the first half of this season and in previous years.

Stanton has been carrying a combination of injury/illness the last three games.

In the last two, he's spent a lot of time playing half forward and out of the midfield. Often taking a good opposition player out of the midfield rotation.

What Prismall does, and not just Pris but also Welsh and McVeigh, is it frees up Lovett, Stanton and Winderlich.

Those three don't have to display the form every week they did in the first eight or so weeks. They can play cameos like they did last night and make a big impact on games.

Pris hasn't replaced Stanton, he's just added depth to our rotation. Coaches now have to put more thought into how they structure up against our midfield.

Re: Let me put this to you

Can we please get armitage from St Kilda?

he will serve us so so so sooooooo well.

Re: Let me put this to you

What the hell is going on in here? They're not competing with each other for a spot.

Stanton kept us in the game against Adelaide with 20 possies to halftime, along with Watson, most of which were contested. This week he had a great third quarter and we got on top and won the game... He also had 11 contested in the win on Anzac day.

Anyone who can't see what Stanton add to the side is a bit off in the head if you ask me. As Buckley said at halftime, "Essendon are still in the game and Lovett and Stanton have been out of it, if they can get involved then Essendon will really challenge". Then Lovett and Stanton get involved and we end up winning by 69.

So yeah, what the hell is going on in here?

Stanton, Prismall, McVeigh, Welsh... these guys are not competing with each other for a spot, they've got one already.

Would absolutely be in their best 22. Would've played in last year's GF had it not been for his knee injury.

As well as they've both played this year, Prismall would take Varcoe's and Byrnes' spots in their team for the sheer fact that Byrnes and Varcoe are paid very little attention.

Re: Let me put this to you

I actually thought this had already began to happen. I didnt see Stanton in the middle until after Watson went off. Some of Stantons best games have been on the wing or half forward. I think his value to the team is far greater when has to worry less about being accountable.

The centre square consists of 4 players from each side until the ball is bounced. One is the ruck, Ryder, Watson is a lock, Welsh is a lock, that leaves one spare spot for the likes of McVeigh, Prismall, Stanton and then the likes of Hocking, Lonergan, Lovett and even Dyson at times to play through there. Like it or not (provided everyone stays fit) Stanton will most liely spend less time in there. You keep bringing up these misleading stats about the Adelaide game but leave out the fact he butchered half of those stats.

Re: Let me put this to you

I believe that is because Stanton has been carrying a minor leg injury (strain of some kind?) and he also reportedly has had a virus that knocked him around. Those are the rumours. So he has been playing more off the HFF. I'm not sure how I think it will play out in the future.

From what I've seen he's also a pretty good goalkicker, so with Prismall now in the team it would be good to see Stanton spend some more time up forward.

Re: Let me put this to you

i believe knights has always intended to have stanton and lovett playing on the wings as they are the runners with less accountability.

they recruited prismall to play in the midfield with watson, welsh and mcveigh. given the high number of rotations prismall would have just as much game time in the middle as these blokes. obviously in your best side you can only name 3 but he is definitely a core of our midfield. like geelong with corey, bartel, ablett, selwood, ling etc we have a much better midfield brigade since adding prismall.

our starting midfield is centre: watson, ruck-rover: welsh, rover: mcveigh.
wings: stanton/lovett.

then we have guys such as prismall, dyson, winderlich, lonergan, davey, reimers, hocking, houli to rotate thru and in bursts depending on whos available etc.

keep in mind Geelongs salary cap problem, they cant fit everyone in. Just like we had to give players away in early 2000, theyre going to have to give up some quality players too. remember as well in the pre-season they wanted to take lovett when he was on the trade table but couldnt fit him into the cap.

and if you say, why prismall? the answer is simple, because have a look at hte their midfield. ablett, corey, bartel, ling at times kelly, chapman, enright the midfield was the one area they could allow a player like prismal to leave

Re: Let me put this to you

Easily in there 22 in the second half of the last year.

wasnt it more to do with he wanted to be in the midfield
who would you put him in front of

ablett, bartell, corey, ling, selwood, johnson, chapman, kelly. they have a few rotations in that bunch.

Re: Let me put this to you

Stanton is a star. Love his running and his long kicking is brilliant.

Prismall just adds an extra hard body and a helluva lot of polish. Really warming to him.

Best midfield we've had since 2001.

I think that he would be getting a game at Geelong had he not injured and obviously left at the end of the year.

However, he wouldn't be getting the time through the midfield that he will at Essendon. He would play in any other midfield in the competition.

Agreed!! Prismall and Welsh are two quality players that we need in every game. We were bloody lucky we got Prismall from Geelong. When Ablett was injured this year, he sure as hell would have filled the breach for Geelong.

The stats don't tell you everything. They don't tell you how Welsh (and Alwyn) literally took Judd out of his quality game, and they don't tell you how beautifully Prismall delivered the ball. You've gotta stay off the booze and watch the game live to fully appreciate how good some players' efforts are.
