I agree. In hindsight it was a bit of a mistake to drop taylor. Not just because of the Scarletts injury, but it just felt as if we had gone a bit too midfield/half-forward heavy, and just missed that one tall defender back there who could have restricted some of the plays, especially on Hale. Milburn is a fantastic player, but one on one isn't his strength, and Harley doesn't really seem to be in all that great a form at the moment.

Truly, we need Egan back :P
egan is vital,(thanks captain obvious) i reckon we should just cut his bloody foot off and play him, he'd be better than harley...

They said the same about Stokes, Byrnes and Varcoe, and now they're all playing together.

I thought Pris was good the other night. A couple of those passes inside 50 were brilliant - just what you'd expect from him.
you can never have too many midfielders, but three small forwards two of whome arnt showing any improvement is surely a surplus...
byrnes isnt didak, trav isnt davis stokes however is > medhurst

I am not too sure how you can suggest Varcoe's not improving.

Varcoe struggled in the VFL in 06. Started strongly but faded in 07 and now in 08 looks better again. Statistically (although only his 3rd game in 08) he is averaging more disposals, marks, tackles and goals compared to 07.

He's offering much more up the ground and, although still soft looks a little harder at the contest.

I'd say he has definitely improved. I am quite happy with how he has gone over the last 3 weeks.

Totally agree Dan, Lets not forget that Gazza averaged 8.5 poss in his 1st 2years of senior footy and Leon Davis 7.4 in his.
Needs 1 or 2 more pre-seasons and another 20-30 games before we see how good he really is. Has very slick hands, neat kick although lacking penatration at the moment and that all important X-factor.
Have a feeling all his detractors will be eating their words in a year or 2.

Well done Prismall on a great game and welcome back to the Seniors where I think you belong.
As often said in the media, you would walk into any other AFL team starting line up but friday you walked into the Cat's team and now have come back into the team and position where you belong. Not only would you walk into any AFL team but you BELONG in the cats starting line up.
WELCOME BACK PRISMALL and hope to see 32 on the starting line up against Power next week

I'm with you coopy one.

Billy stated on SEN late last week(Thurs or Fri. Can't remember) that Prismall won't be at Geelong next year. Not getting enough opportunities. I hope he gets a decent run in the seniors this year but unless he's cemented a spot in the first 22 then I agree with Billy. He's gone.

I expect PA to try to emulate some of what North on the weekend with Hale. Lade will go forward and he has been known to cause us some grief in the past. Therefore Lonergan will play back like he did for most of the last match.

Out: Scarlett, Prismall, Brynes/Varcoe
In: Hawkins, Selwood, Taylor

Fair enough, too. A bloke of his talent just can't rot away in the magoos like he has. It's almost criminal and sadly, it's all Joel Selwood's fault! Bloody walk-up starter and Mr NAB Rising Star:D!! Stole his spot...

Good that we have Ottens back, even if he isn't at 100% just yet. I don't think I'd reintroduce Hawkins just yet and lo-and-behold, Prissa's gotta make way for the timber merchant!

Surely, surely not he wont be dropped for this week? If he plays well for say, 8 or 9 games this year in the seniors, and still decides to leave, then his currency as a trade u would think would go up too.

Then they must at least play him to prop up his trade value then

the cats are very good at moving on players everyone else thinks are stars

on what evidence do you suggest he has the "all important x-factor"? he is yet to do anything remotely special or noteworty (except for a few run down tackles which are more speed reliant than x-factor reliant).

there is no place for byrnes and varcoe in our team. if we are looking for x-factor, where is davenport? nobody is more exciting with the ball than that bloke.

Davenport is 23 before the end of this season and has played exactly 0 games at AFL level. Doesn't excite me greatly.

Muddy you are exactly one of those detractors that will be eating your words.
There is no doubt about Varcoe's skill and potential. He has cat like reflexes, lightening hands, just needs to get physically stronger and develop stamina. The club seems to think highly enough of him to select him with a 1st Rd pick whilst he had a fractured foot.
Obviously the club sees something you can't.!!

Is it just me or is James Kelly a liability this year. I'm surprised as i saw what i thought was decent potential in him the last few years.

It seems that whenever theres a tough pressure situation his foot skills let him down. His decision making seems to blank out at critical times, its not terrible by any means but when your in a benchmark-midfield it becomes noticeable. IMO Prismall could be a permanent inclusion, much craftier with the boot.

I'm interesting to see who shares the same opinion on this one. I mean its easy to point the finger at Shannon Byrnes because he is pretty crap in all aspects IMO - but i think Kelly is not evolving as expected, and it shows in comparison to Jimmy, Gaz and Corey. Im not saying he should be doing freakish things like Gaz, but reliable disposal is paramount these days.

I think it's just you.

He started the year brilliantly (and i have no doubt he would have lead the B&F after Round 4), and whilst he has tapered off a little, i have no qualms about his season to date.

I know stats aren't everything, but he is averaging 21 touches, 5 marks and 5.5 tackles.
He could stand to kick more goals, but that aside, those numbers are a pretty solid return for a flanker/midfielder.

His disposal could be improved though.

Ignorance is bliss.

Kelly has certainly had an ordinary 4 weeks. He was solid last year in the H&A season and very good in the finals, though despite starting this season off very well, he has let himself down badly of late with average disposal and poor decision making when entering the forward 50.

yes they do, they see the need for two defensive forward pockets rather than two defensive backpockets, "lets have the players who can kick goals playing in the backline, and two blokes who run around in circles cherry picking goals playing in the forward line." thats seems to be the contention of the club.

when has varcoe ever created a goal for himself? he is a weak receiver who doesn't receive nearly enough of the ball. and enough has been said about byrnes already. honestly, i'd be delighted to eat my words just cant see it happening

It does seem to be the contention of the club, a club that is the reigning premier and is 10-1...

How many forward pockets have carved us up in the past 2 years? And when they have how many have turned games from these performances? Whilst I agree we don't have a small 'shutdown' defensive player I'd also suggest that the way we attack from defense has rendered such a role as irrelevant...

As for Varcoe, I'd back the club to give him the time to develop and from what I've seen this year think he's taken a few steps in the right direction.

Whilst getting back to Prismall, I think he'll get more of a run, might not be this week though. If he doesn't want to be at Geelong next year we won't get much in return for him, but for anyone that has paid attention a lot of 2nd string players have moved on from premiership sides to never really step up. In fact, right now I'm struggling to think of any fringe player from a Premiership team that has moved on and become more successfull??
