Miers Strnadica Matera
Ceglar Robinson Pearce
Hughes Pittonet Schumacher Sambono

Picks: 53, 59, 69, 77, 79 & 97

Trades:
Pick 2, 5 , 83 & Cox
for
Cripps, Casboult, 10 & 73

Couple top 5 picks and a depth forward for a young gun midfielder, A KPF that is a perfect anchor for a forward line. Takes good pack marks and provides a get out of jail free card. Keep a good pick & a late pick upgrade

Sandilands for Ceglar
Almost retired ruckman for a good backup/2nd ruck

S.Hill for Bruce
Winger outside my age profile for a much needed KPF that is only 25

Darcy, McCarthy, Apeness & 10
For
Docherty, Kruezer, Williamson & Fisher

Good young midfielder, McCarthy who I think won’t fulfill what many think he’ll become, Ruck depth & a good pick for a superstar Young half back, A quality proven ruck in his prime and couple good young players

Fyfe for Prestia & 17
Got a quality young mid & 17 for an injury prone superstar that is just out of my age profile

Logue, A.Pearce, 17, 42 & 73
For
Weitering, Steven, 61 & 64

Weitering a young gun KPD + Steven for a couple young KPDs yet to stamp their name in the game + some speculative picks

Walters, Steven, 60, 71
for
M.Crouch, Gallucci, Seedsman, 69 & 77

Scenario. Got a young mid not far from superstar status in Crouch. Gallucci has good POTENTIAL. Doesn’t mean much but seen watched one SANFL game that he was in and he looked good

Sheridan, Taberner, Kruezer & 66
For
Hardwick, Impey, McEvoy & Pittonet

Sheridan & Taberner wasn’t best 22. Kruezer for a slightly younger ruck that kicks 1.2 goals/game(highest scoring ruckman). Hardwick & Impey are best 22 & Pittonet is just some ruck depth. Pittonet has been slowly improving every year.

Neale & Gallucci
for
Marchbank & M.Kennedy

This one links in with the next one as I wasn’t going to do one without doing the other. Marchbank is a quality defender + Kennedy is a quality half forward.
Beale is a quality midfielder but Good young defenders aren’t easy to come by. Gallucci hasn’t played a game and could be something but could also be nothing.

Weitering for D.Smith & D.Parish
Midfielders & forwards are of a higher need with the addition of Marchbank. Weitering becomes despensible for some quality young midfielders/forwards

Mundy & Ryan
for
Howard & J.Silvagni

Losing Ryan isn’t ideal but Howard is a young KPD which is only improving. J.Silvagni helps as a forward.
Mundy doesn’t have much value for me.

Bennell & Tucker
for
Wingard & Hampton

Not sure what to make of Bennell but definitely needed a proven small forward after having to trade Walters for my scenario. Tucker is a good young player but wasn’t in my best 22 and Hampton is a like for like replacement

Pick 61 for Mitch Robinson

Needed an inside mid for some depth. Robinson is 28 so still has a few good years left in him and only costs me a 8 Pick downgrade as I was only going to use 3 nd picks.

Langdon, Ballantyne & 64
For
J.Kelly & 59

Might of delisted Ballantyne if I couldn’t get a deal done for him.
Langdon wasn’t best 22 but Kelly is + get a 5 Pick upgrade

Post Trade Period Summary:

A reasonably quite trade period in comparison with some of the other clubs, based on my assessment of list profile of the Bulldogs, I am of the thinking that the current list has sufficient talent and depth to challenge the top 4 in 2018.

The need for a genuine ruckman was determined early on in the trade period, the idea of this was to bring in a quality ruckman in order to free up players such as Boyd, Roughead and the newly acquired Jackson Trengove as well as providing some quality years to Tim English to continue his development, I was able to agree a trade with North Melbourne for Todd Goldstein, sending Tom Liberatore the other way. The loss of Liberatore wasn't ideal but necessary as I felt the inclusion of a guy like Goldstein represented a significant need. Ideally I would have liked to bring in a key forward and as such held discussions with several clubs however a suitable deal could not be reached. Ultimately I feel that the inclusion of Schache coupled with Tom Boyd returning to senior football in 2018 will provide the Bulldogs with an adequate key forward threat.

I received numerous offers for Bontempelli and McCrae however I saw little value in trading these players as the club is aiming for a tilt at another premiership, trading players of this calibre out for draft picks or players was nonsensical in my opinion.

I made clear to clubs that picks 9 and 16 would be available for quality players, after discussions with several clubs regarding some possible trades, I settled on a deal to send 16 to Richmond in exchange for Marc Murphy, it was thought that Murphy can add some extra class to an already solid midfield.

All up I am happy with the period, the addition of Todd Goldstein and Marc Murphy, coupled with the already counted additions of Jackson Trengove, Josh Schache and Hayden Crozier, the Western Bulldogs should have a list here that can challenge for top 4 honours in 2018. Ultimately I was happy to hang onto pick 9 and take that into the draft. Pre draft my list size is 40, picks 9 and 82 will take that to 42, with the rookie draft to fill the remaining spots on the list.

Fergus Greene was delisted to make room on the primary list, the aim is re-draft via the rookie draft.

TRADES:
1. Jimmy Toumpas --> Brisbane
Pick 52 --> Port Adelaide

Jimmy Toumpas adds midfield depth to the Lions line-up as he moves to his third club.

2. Pick 19, Pick 69 --> Brisbane
Daniel Rich, Pick 44 --> West Coast

Daniel Rich moves back to his home state for an end of first round pick with #19, while Pick #44 and #69 are exchanged.

3. Jacob Hopper, Pick 11, Pick 27 --> Brisbane
Pick 1, Pick 40 --> Greater Western Sydney

The Lions increase their midfield depth by picking up an inside midfielder in 20 year old Hopper, taken at #7 in the 2015 draft, that they consider the equal to the player they wpuld have taken with Pick 1 in this year's draft. As well as that they gain Pick 11 and a second round draft pick in 27 giviing them five selections in the Top 30 of the 2017 draft.

4. Pick 14, George Hewett --> Brisbane
Dayne Zorko --> Sydney

Despite losing elite midfielder, the near 29 year old Dayne Zorko, the Lions pick up another first round Draft Pick (#14) and midfielder - forward 21 year old George Hewett in exchange. The Lions (at the time of trade) now have six picks in the Top 30. Hewett will have ample opportunities in the midfield and having finished fifth in the Sydney Swans best and Fairest in 2017 should be able to break into the Lions senior side in 2018.

5 Pick 13, Billy Stretch, --> Brisbane
Dayne Beams, Pick 27, Pick 69 --> Melbourne

The Lions trade out their captain and a second round pick plus a late pick for their sixth first round draft pick and young midfielder Billy Stretch. The Lions now have 11, 13, 14, 15, 18 and 19 to take to the draft.

6 Liam Duggan --> Brisbane
Pick 19 --> West Coast
The Lions find their replacement for Daniel Rich with the arrival of 20 year old Liam Duggan, slotting onto the half back flank. Duggan, who was taken at Pick 11 in the 2014 draft, is an elite kick and can move into the midfield as an inside midfielder.

7 Billy Longer, Pick 30 --> Brisbane
Stefan Martin, Tom Cutler, Oscar McInerney --> St Kilda
32yo Stefan Martin returns to Victoria along with young ruckman 23yo Oscar McInerney and half back flanker 22yo Tom Cutler who saw senior opportunities disappearing with the arrival of Liam Duggan, while Brisbane gain former player 24yo Billy Longer and Pick 30. The Lions again have six picks in the Top 30.

8 Pick 6, Pick 27 --> Brisbane
Charlie Cameron, George Hewett, Pick 30 --> Melbourne
32yo Stefan Martin returns to Victoria along with young ruckman 23yo Oscar McInerney and half back flanker 22yo Tom Cutler who saw senior opportunities disappearing with the arrival of Liam Duggan, while Brisbane gain former player 24yo Billy Longer and Pick 30. The Lions again have six picks in the Top 30.

9 Pick 4, Pick 23, Pick 36 --> Brisbane
Pick 6, Pick 18, Pick 27 --> Melbourne

The Lions trade their way into the Top 4, giving up Pick 6, 18 and 27 and gain back 23 and 36.

10 Nathan Vardy, Pick 33 --> Brisbane
Pick 23 --> Richmond

The Lions add to their ruck / forward depth with the arrival of Nathan Vardy who is a mobile ruckman at 199 centimetres (6.5 ft) tall and weighing 101 kilograms (220 lb), with good skills and a fierce competitive drive. He and Billy Longer will be sharing ruck duties in 2018 with Vardy able to move forward to assist Eric Hipwood. The Lions trade down ten places from Pick 23 to Pick 33.

11 Will Langford, Pick 75 --> Brisbane
Luke Hodge, Pick 36 --> Hawthorn

The Lions trade back Luke Hodge to his old club in return for Hawthorn premiership midfielder 25 year old Will Langford and Pick #75. Langford will slot straight into the Lions midfield and at 25 years of age and with premiership experience will prove invaluable to guide the younger Lions towards the club's next permiership.

12 Pick 61 --> Brisbane
Mitch Robinson --> Fremantle

Due to their surplus of younger midfielders and their expressed desire to get games into the younger players the Lions trade out 28 yo Mitch Robinson for Pick 61.

IN: Jimmy Toumpas, Pick #19, Pick #69, Jacob Hopper, Pick #11, Pick #27, Pick #14, George Hewett, Pick #13, Billy Stretch, Liam Duggan, Billy Longer, Pick 30, Pick #27 (in again), Pick #6, Pick #4, Pick #23, Pick #36, Nathan Vardy, Pick #33, Will Langford, Pick #75, Pick #61

Round 2: 33
Round 3:
Round 4: 61
Later rounds: 75, 93, 111

Post-trade summary
The Lions went in with a clear strategy to further youthen their list and pick up players and or draft picks that will help contribute to their next premiership as well as retain their best young players.
Rucks: The Lions managed to refresh their ruck division with the acquisitions of Billy Longer and Nathan Vardy. The Lions were aiming for ruckmen in the age bracket of 24-26 with an aim of challenging for the premiership in 2021-2022, when they will be 28-29 and hopefully in their prime. To do so, they traded out Stefan Martin and 23 year old rookie player Oscar McInerney. Vardy has the added bonus of being able to pinch hit in the forward line and will relieve pressure on Eric Hipwood as the key forward target. 22 year old Archie Smith serves as a very competent backup and will only improve further as he reaches his prime in the next few years. Rookie Matt Eagles is also there if needed.
Key Position: There wasn't much change in this department, apart from the arrival of Vardy with the existing key position defenders of Andrews, Gardiner and McStay as well as key forwards Hipwood and Walker retained. The Lions are clearly adopting the Richmond model of having only one key forward and high pressuring smaller forwards locking it up in their forward line.
Midfield/Small Forwards/Defenders: The Lions were after depth in the midfield and it looks as if they will be able to achieve that with the picks they will take to the draft. They were also able to refresh and youthen their midfield with the additions of young star Jacob Hopper, premiership player Will Langford, Billy Stretch, Liam Duggan (an excellent replacement for Rich) and Jimmy Toumpas to replace the likes of Rich, Robinson, Zorko and Beams. Cutler [scenario], Cameron and Hewett were casualties as the Lions sought to trade up to earlier in the draft, but those types may be able to be replaced via the draft and Lewis Taylor will continue to fulfil that position in the meantime.

Age Breakdown:
18-19: Jacob Allison, Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry, Alex Witherden, Rhys Mathieson, Corey Lyons, Andrew Brayshaw, Jarrod Brander, Zac Bailey, Nick Coffield, Lochie O'Brien, Connor Ballenden,Mitchell Hinge
20-21: Cedric Cox, Ben Keays, Liam Duggan, Jacob Hopper, Billy Stretch, Liam Dawson, Sam Skinner, Eric Hipwood, Harris Andrews, Jake Barrett,
22-23: Marco Paparone, Daniel McStay, Darcy Gardiner, Lewis Taylor, Sam Mayes, Jimmy Toumpas, Archie Smith, Billy Hartung
24-25: Will Langford, Billy Longer, Josh Walker, Ryan Lester, Jack Frost,
26-27: Allen Christenson, Ryan Bastinac, Tom Bell, Nathan Vardy, Matt Eagles,
28+: Rohan Bewick.

Draft Position: The Lions traded from having three picks in the first round (Picks 1, 15 and 18) and three in the third round to having five first round picks (Picks 4, 11, 13, 14 and 15) and one in the second round. In doing so they'll secure what they consider to be one of the four best youngsters in this year's draft, some talented youngsters mid first round and the pick in the second round will be used hopefully to snare a talented slider. Picks 61 and 75 will be extremely speculative, but may yield another talented player.

Best 22 Post-Trade/Draft
:
B: Daniel McStay, Harris Andrews, Luke Hodge
HB: Alex Witherden, Darcy Gardiner, Liam Duggan
C:
Hugh McCluggage, Jacob Hopper, Ryan Bastinac
HF: Ryan Lester, Nathan Vardy, Rhys Mathieson
F: Cedric Cox, Eric Hipwood, Lewis Taylor
R: Billy Longer, Will Langford, Allen Christensen
INT: Ben Keays, Nick Robertson, Sam Mayes, Jarrod Berry
Emg: Josh Walker, Jacob Allison, Billy Stretch

REMAINING SENIOR LIST/ROOKIES: Tom Bell, Rohan Bewick, Liam Dawson, Jack Frost, Corey Lyons, Marco Paparone, Sam Skinner, Archie Smith, Jimmy Toumpas, Josh Walker, Andrew Brayshaw, Jarrod Brander, Nick Coffield, Zac Bailey, Lochie O'Brien, Connor Ballenden, Billy Hartung, Sam Skinner, Jake Barrett, Matt Eagles, Mitchell Hinge, Claye Beams, Cian Hanley, Dion Johnstone, Matthew Allen

Draft Selections:

Pick 4 - ANDREW BRAYSHAW (balanced midfielder)

The Lions grab Andrew Brayshaw with Pick 4 as one of their targeted top four players and further increase their mdifield depth. As a midfielder, there really isn’t much Brayshaw doesn’t do. He is just as prominent in contested situations as in space and while the endurance results have grabbed most of the headlines, he has a turn of speed that can catch his opponents off guard. He has a high football IQ and seems to instinctively know when to make offensive or defensive decisions. He gets to the offensive side of a stoppage whenever possible, but isn’t a one way runner. He will block, protect and run frantically to lay a tackle when the opportunity presents. Brayshaw is also an extremely underrated kick, operating at high efficiency levels despite the contested nature of his disposals.

Pick 11 - JARROD BRANDER. (Key Position Tall Forward / Defender)

The Lions traded into Pick #11 with this young key position player in mind and so with this pick they get their man. Brander is probably the best key-position player available in the draft. He's a good overhead mark who has the ability to have a commanding influence on a game.Able to occupy a key-position role at either end of the field, the 194 cm Brander has done so effectively throughout the year. His intercept work in defence is promising, but he perhaps enjoyed his best performance of the season playing forward for the Allies. On that occasion he presented well, high up the field and worked hard back to goal. As such the Lions see him as an excellent complement for their promising young forward Eric Hipwood and as a replacement for current centre half-forward Josh Walker.

Pick 13 - NICK COFFIELD. (General Defender/Outside Midfielder)

The Lions are surprised Nick Coffield is still available at this pick and had no hesitation in calling his name, when their turn came. Coffield is a general defender who has excellent closing speed, good game sense, solid skills and can create plenty of drive out of the back half. He ran a 2.91-second 20-metre sprint at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, which highlighted his brilliant take-off pace and movement. At almost 191cm, Coffield is also a nice size to match up on a range of forwards, and because of his pace he can also be used to shut down quicker, smaller types who present a threat. He averaged 21 disposals at TAC Cup level this season and uses the ball well out of the backline. He was also captain of the Knights, highlighting his strong leadership qualities. Coffield's ability to take the game forward was also evident in his scoring power. He averaged nearly a goal a game at TAC Cup level this season (13 in 16 appearances for the Knights), which included a four-goal haul in the opening game of the season. Coffield can also play as a composed midfielder who is very good under pressure. and he reminds them of one Hugh McCluggage where he has plenty of time with ball in hand in the contest. Coffield is a clean user on his right foot and his defensive efforts are strong where he floats around and wins the ball at ease.

Pick 14 - ZAC BAILEY (Inside Midfielder)

The Lions go for another inside midfielder at #14 to further add to their midfield depth. Bailey possesses elite speed, in particular his acceleration which is far greater than majority of the other midfielders likely to be selected in the opening two rounds of the 2017 Draft. His time of 2.98 seconds in the 20m sprint at the AFL Draft Combine, was in the top 10 for all players who tested at the National Combine. It isn’t just off the field where he shows his speed, but during games it is notable. In one such passage against Vic Metro in the National Under 18 Championships, Bailey burst from the centre bounce at speed (with only a few minutes remaining on the clock) with ball in hand – kicking it long inside 50.

Bailey uses the ball well by foot, finding options with ease short or long. During the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships for the Allies, Bailey averaged nine kicks, kicking at 66.7 per cent efficiency. However – this stats are effected by the clash against South Australia where Bailey went at 30.8 per cent. He didn’t miss a target against Western Australia, while against champions Vic Metro – 11 of Bailey’s 12 kicks were effective. Compared with other inside midfielders in the draft pool – the 66.7 per cent is well above average.

Bailey’s defensive work and tackling numbers are always high – with the inside midfielder hunting the ball back with venom. In the National Under 18 Championships, he averaged 4.5 tackles per game – putting him in the top group of midfielders.

Pick 15 - LOCHIE O'BRIEN (Outside Midfielder)

This pick was a difficult one for the Lions who thought long and hard about a number of candidates with their final pick until the middle and late stages of the draft. Having picked up the likes of Brayshaw and Bailey, the Lions decided to add futher outside speed to their line-up. Lochie O'Brien is a classy outside midfielder who is likened to former Roo and Saint Nick Dal Santo.

He is a traditional left footer in the sense of having a weapon for a boot and he knows how to find space and gather the ball cleanly. He possesses elite speed which can help him burst away on the outside at speed. He's a good decision maker and is someone you want to have the ball in their hands. He impressed last year for Vic Country as a bottom-ager playing on the wing, a position that allows for him to be a receiver on the outside where he can clear the ball via a pinpoint pass. However his best position might well be on the half-back flank where he can settle his team down, make smart decisions and where he rarely makes a error by foot.

Pick 33 - CONNOR BALLENDEN (Key Position Tall Forward / Ruck)

One of the best key-position talents in this year’s draft, Ballenden is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch from a sparse academy group. The 199cm utility has played in a variety of roles throughout the season. He came into the year as a key forward, but perhaps played his best footy as a key defender. Ballenden also spent periods in the ruck, where he was promising. He’s a raking kick, which is arguably his best asset. The key forward won the kicking test, being the only prospect to kick a perfect score from six kicks. The 18-year-old is no stranger to the Club, having spent two weeks training with the Senior Lions squad during the summer as part of the AFL Academy program. In 2017, Ballenden played alongside the Lions Premiership NEAFL team, kicking two goals in the Grand Final to help the Lions come away with a narrow three-point victory. He played seven senior NEAFL games with the Lions this season, kicking 10 goals. Assessing that Ballenden would still be likely to be available in the thirities and not wishing to use a first rounder on him, the Lions traded down from Pick 18 to Pick 23 and then to Pick 33 in order to trade into the Top 4 and then add Nathan Vardy to their tall stocks.

Pick 61 - BILLY HARTUNG (Outside Midfielder)

Pick 75 - SAM SKINNER (Tall defender)

Rookies:
Claye Beams
Cian Hanley
Dion Johnstone
Matthew Allen

North Melbourne:

Trade period comments:

Maynard trade is a big win as a massively underpriced get.

Other trades North broke roughly even, if got the marginally better end mostly.

What made this a successful trade period is core of good young players has grown with older players, not required players and picks moved as necessary to achieve this.

Grade: A

Melbourne:

Trade period comments:

The Jesse Hogan trade makes me squirm, noting that he has the scope to be the best key forward in the game, and the return was a soon to be 30 year-old ruckman and a key forward who just played 20+ games for the first time in his career.

Max Gawn for Robbie Gray is another move that makes me feel uncomfortable, moving arguably the best ruckman in the game for a midfielder/forward who will be 30 next season. With rucks given the relative positional scarcity of players of that calibre and understanding the age gap, I didn’t like the trade either.

The two for two trades where the best player moved I also wasn’t a fan of, as I’d much rather in the most part gaining the best player in the deal.

What Melbourne did well was some of the player for player trades involving picks and also the trades where a still developing player was moved for an established player.

Crunching the net losses v net gains, Melbourne came pretty close to breaking even but due to moving away more star power than was gained I’ll give Melbourne a still solid but slightly below average…
Grade: C+

Carlton:

Trade period comments:

The Cripps trade I did not like at all. He is a star! You don’t trade a young star who is your franchise talent for a couple of picks! Well unders received!

The trade of Weitering and Steven I find even more frustrating from a Carlton perspective with a Godfather trade needed to get those guys! Not Peace and Logue!

The trades of Simpson, Murphy and Wright I didn’t like with the value received well unders. Same with Lachie Neale.

The one “winning” trade was the trade for Goddard, McCartin and Steven trade where the value proposition was much stronger and Carlton clearly for mine improved their list.

With too many stars and established players lost, Carlton with this trade scenario aren’t left with enough to field a competitive team.

Grade: D

Fremantle:

Trade period comments:

Gaining Cripps so cheaply is a huge win!

Trade for Weitering and Steven another trade that made Fremantle massively better! Probably the most lopsided trade through this whole trade game.

Mitch Robinson a good get for a late pick. He can still play.

On the negative. While it may sound counter-intuitive given Fremantle in reality is a rebuilding situation where more young talent is obviously needed. In this trade game, as soon as the Cripps trade was made. I would have very quickly changed strategy and held onto quality established players. I felt overall the focus on age profile was way too great. Today’s AFL is so even that it only takes one or two good trades and a good run with injury to take you over the top, and in a game like this with such radical player movement, I wouldn’t have downgraded by moving the likes of Sandilands, Fyfe, Walters and Jack Steven.

It’s a trade period where Fremantle look like a 7-10 team, but could well have been a top 4 side without such restrictive focus on age profile. Age profile is important but some players can play into their mid 30s. And with teams sometimes building quicker than expected if the right talent is gained, the likes of Fyfe, Walters and Steven certainly aren’t too old to go forward with, as either/or/both could play until they’re 35.

Grade: B+

St Kilda

Trade period comments:

The trade involving Steven/McCartin/Goddard I don’t like with Cunningham and Marshall two I’m not certain about as long term players.

The David Armitage trade also I don’t like with the value not at all right for an established midfielder of strong quality.

Lachie Neale was a solid get for the price paid.

Otherwise the other trades are roughly even.

Grade: D+

Essendon:

The trade for Brayshaw and Tyson I felt was a losing one, losing more talent than was gained.

Zac Merrett trade a losing one, giving up one of the better young midfielders in the competition for some picks and a recent first round midfielder who has yet to debut and prove himself.

Trades for Weitering and Armitage big wins and great value gets for the price spent.

Come out of the trade period breaking roughly even.

Grade: B

West Coast:

Trade period comments:

Nothing too crazy. Like and consider the Zach Merrett trade winning. Otherwise the other trades West Coast roughly broke even.

Grade: B+

Gold Coast:

Trade period comments:

Trades 3 and 4 were both relatively losing.

Other trades Gold Coast broke roughly even.

Grade: C

Adelaide:

Trade period comments:

Hanley an excellent get who helps improve Adelaide and came for a suitable price.

Solid two for one trade up to Jayden Hunt who is the best player in the deal.

Moving Atkins and Kelly up to Wingard is flat out incredible, and Balic still has scope to develop. Terrific deal with Wingard a star!

Like the move for Jack Steven and Michael Walters, with Walters an upgrade on Charlie Cameron and Steven arguably as good as Matt Crouch.

On the losing side I would argue is the Jenkins for Beams trade with pick 12 conceded. As a 40+ goal per year, 100+ mark per year key forward, having to concede that and a first round pick for Beams who is injury prone (having not played 20 games since 2012 with Collingwood).

I see the Wingard and Hampton for Bennell and Tucker deal as losing. Bennell with his injury history having last played more than 15 games in 2012 and having only played two games since 2015 isn’t nearly worth Wingard.

In the future I’d recommend with established players and stars placing a higher weighting on durability with players adding no value on injury lists.

I do like that list needs have been filled with Lever and Cameron both replaced which are bonuses.

Grade: B+

Hawthorn:

Trade period comments:

The Kreuzer trade is winning gaining the best player in the deal and also Sheridan who I view as handy.

Sam Powell-Pepper I also like as a get in what was probably a slightly favourable trade with Port.

Don’t mind Luke Hodge and Aaron Sandilands gains for leadership and experience given nothing much was conceded.

Otherwise ins and outs mostly offset one another.

Nothing overly game-changing through the trade period, but trades were still solid.

Grade: B+

Western Bulldogs:

Trade period comments:

Quite like the win-now approach given the openness of the competition and the plausibility of a rebound season from the Dogs. The value gained in both the Goldstein and Murphy trades were about right. The key is the Dogs as a result got better and move a step closer towards contention which makes this a solid off-season, albeit I won’t give extra credit as only broke even in deals.

Grade: B

Brisbane:

Trade period comments:

The Dayne Beams trade was a poor one, conceding a high level midfielder and club captain for a still developing player.

As a general list strategy I’m also very heavily anti the trading of veteran leadership and experience. Whether it’s a win now situation, or whether it’s a rebuilding project. In the case of Brisbane, trading Beams, Zorko, Hodge, Cameron, Martin, Rich and Robinson. That’s hard to stomach and leaves Brisbane with a bunch of young players and picks who will find it very hard to develop because there isn’t anyone on the playing list with the experience or leadership to help support the coaches in helping them develop on and off the field. It keeps Brisbane in the rebuilding loop that too many clubs have been in for too long and Brisbane have had to endure in recent seasons.

Mitch Robinson, Luke Hodge and Stefan Martin trades were all unders, irrespective of the likely remaining years they have in their careers, their immediate value will be significant.

Grade: D

Geelong:

Trade period comments:

I don’t know why Ablett and Taylor are both listed as outs and ins respectively? I also found it relevantly hard to track which trades Geelong were involved in.

The Treloar trade which took only Lachie Henderson and Balic to secure was a strong move.

Other trades are far as I can pick up, while some big names were moved both ways, I felt Geelong roughly broke even in both the Danger and Duncan moves for various pieces.

Grade: B+

Sydney:

Trade period comments:

After acquiring Tom Lynch, I consider the trade of Lynch for pick 1 losing, with Lynch worth in my view much more than anyone up the top end in this years draft.

As a premiership contender, I don’t like the trades of Z.Jones, K.Jack and K.Tippett, with each of the three deals in my view losing on value and also steps away from contention.

The move I do like is the list addition of Dayne Zorko who makes any team much better.

Grade: D+

Collingwood:

Trade period comments:

The Maynard trade is a poor one. He is one of Collingwood’s best young players and is worth substantially more than what was gained in the deal.

The Reid for Hooker deal for value I also didn’t like with pick 6 too much to include in that deal with Hooker turning 30 and Reid (when healthy) comparable.

Scharenberg I also favour to Rory Thompson, with the pick downgrade not ideal.

Overall I like the attempt to fix Collingwood’s KPP issues by adding established KPPs to pair with Moore. The best 22 here has a better balance than it does in reality, which was no doubt a focus here. Also moving injury prone players (Reid/Fasolo/Scharenberg) I can’t knock, though in each case I question the value proposition in each deal.

The Rance trade was the winning trade.

The large issue with the trades is a misunderstanding of where Collingwood are at as a list. Adding the likes of Rance and Hooker who will turn 30 next year don’t make sense unless you feel it will be enough to enable Collingwood to contend, which I don’t believe it would.

A further critique is Collingwood who I believe as presently constructed are the fourth oldest team in the competition, feeling this trade period isn’t enough to enable Collingwood to contend. It’s overall not enough of a step towards winning or building a young core to be an offseason for me to love the moves made.

Grade: C

Richmond:

Trade period comments:

Love the Fyfe, Murphy, Lewis Jetta and Matthew Wright additions. All great value gets and make Richmond better.

The Fyfe trade for pick 1 + 32 I wouldn’t have made given Richmond’s situation as last years premier and aiming to go back-to-back, but converting pick one into Tom Lynch makes that fine.

Michael Johnson is an upgrade on Sam Frost.

The Rance trade for Treloar was a step back. Then the Treloar for Henderson trade is another I’m not liking as a significant downgrade.

I also don’t like the moving out of Murphy given Richmond’s win-now situation.

A potentially great offseason with some great early trades to greatly upgrade the list was in part ruined by some trades which downgraded the list. Still a net win, albeit not as major as it could have been.

Grade: B+

GWS:

Trade period comments:

Some big trades, but all moves made were largely a wash.

I like that GWS went for players and more established players over young players, as a win-now situation. Patrick Dangerfield and Nat Fyfe are great gets as two of the best mids in the game, but GWS already are incredible through the midfield and have other pressing needs. No small forward who can pressure was added which was disappointing. The loss of Zac Williams down back is a big one, though it’s somewhat offset by the addition of Rory Laird and Guthrie who can also play back. Blicavs helps through the ruck where more established options are certainly needed. And McGovern is an upgrade down back. But losing Jeremy Cameron up forward hurts a lot as one of the premier key forwards in the game, and options looking thinner up front.

Grade: B+

Port Adelaide:

Trade period comments:

Having trouble figuring out all the trades made.

Like the Gray for Gawn trade. Gawn is younger, still may have more growth in him and is a more dominant position in a position where there is much greater relevance scarcity. Big win.

The trade for Hogan was another very winning trade given the lack of durability Dixon has displayed over his career and Ryder’s age, while noting Hogan’s standing in the game as one of the potential great key forwards of the future.

Trades for Mundy and Ryan are strong.

The Wingard, Powell-Pepper and Pittard trades each respectively were losing, with the Wingard trade the worst of the bunch.

Grade: B+

Fremantle:

Trade period comments:

Gaining Cripps so cheaply is a huge win!

Trade for Weitering and Steven another trade that made Fremantle massively better! Probably the most lopsided trade through this whole trade game.

Thanks for judging this.
You always provide great reasoning for each ranking.

I agree with you about letting go of Steven & Fyfe. Shouldn’t of done that in hindsight. Had to trade Walters as he was my trade scenario so I packaged Steven with him as Adelaide wanted a midfielder that could have impact on a game.

Thank you once again for being a big help. You should play the next game that happens

Time is a big issue.

I did similar with a lot of the draft and trade board people I believe it was last year, or perhaps the year before that.

If someone calls Cal Twomey, Brett Anderson, Matt Balmer and some other public figures who are all over the draft and trade stuff. I'd make the time if they did.

So did i win? hahaha

The trade component I thought North were overall the most solid overall.

While the draft is a much smaller component which would receive much lower rating, and may only affect grading by around half a grade mostly, I found the draft a challenge to figure out which club picked which players with that information missing for a lot of teams.

Did very well. The Libba and Daw deals were fair but very much on the win side for the rest of those deals listed. To get in class players like Treloar, Atkins, Petracca were fantastic. 9/10

Draft

Spargo a reach at that selection for mine. Kicking a real issue. Stoddardt a good get and the others are so / so. I really like Banfield as a player. 6/10
