Huge amount of change so hard to get a read on and clearly wouldn't happen in AFL land as ruins the culture of a place. Also not sure Dees were that far off so some tactical improvements probably more what I would have done. Having said that its a good 22 and probably on par with what they have save for some big improvements in the forwards. Dont like losing class players like Oliver, Petracca, McDonald and Hogan. Rating is not a reflection of the types brought in more a reflection of why so many and particularly why a number of older types who are injury prone. 6.5 /10

If the goal was to load up on picks then it was accomplished albeit letting go guys like Cripps, Marchbank, Weitering, Docherty, Kennedy and SPS is beyond me. Take less high end draft picks and keep your elite young talent. 22 is significantly worse for mine as a result. 4/10

Beale is a quality midfielder but Good young defenders aren’t easy to come by. Gallucci hasn’t played a game and could be something but could also be nothing.

Weitering for D.Smith & D.Parish
Midfielders & forwards are of a higher need with the addition of Marchbank. Weitering becomes despensible for some quality young midfielders/forwards

Losing Ryan isn’t ideal but Howard is a young KPD which is only improving. J.Silvagni helps as a forward.

Not sure what to make of Bennell but definitely needed a proven small forward after having to trade Walters for my scenario. Tucker is a good young player but wasn’t in my best 22 and Hampton is a like for like replacement

Needed an inside mid for some depth. Robinson is 28 so still has a few good years left in him and only costs me a 8 Pick downgrade as I was only going to use 3 nd picks.

Again hard to judge as their was a lot going on. Dont like losing players like Fyfe and dont think that was a good deal at all but a number of the others were very good deals (particularly ones involving Blues and WIngard.). Overall there was a plan though and it was stuck to and the 22 is better. 7.5/10

Hewett will have ample opportunities in the midfield and having finished fifth in the Sydney Swans best and Fairest in 2017 should be able to break into the Lions senior side in 2018.

Post-trade summary
The Lions went in with a clear strategy to further youthen their list and pick up players and or draft picks that will help contribute to their next premiership as well as retain their best young players.
Rucks: The Lions managed to refresh their ruck division with the acquisitions of Billy Longer and Nathan Vardy. The Lions were aiming for ruckmen in the age bracket of 24-26 with an aim of challenging for the premiership in 2021-2022, when they will be 28-29 and hopefully in their prime. To do so, they traded out Stefan Martin and 23 year old rookie player Oscar McInerney. Vardy has the added bonus of being able to pinch hit in the forward line and will relieve pressure on Eric Hipwood as the key forward target. 22 year old Archie Smith serves as a very competent backup and will only improve further as he reaches his prime in the next few years. Rookie Matt Eagles is also there if needed.
Key Position: There wasn't much change in this department, apart from the arrival of Vardy with the existing key position defenders of Andrews, Gardiner and McStay as well as key forwards Hipwood and Walker retained. The Lions are clearly adopting the Richmond model of having only one key forward and high pressuring smaller forwards locking it up in their forward line.
Midfield/Small Forwards/Defenders: The Lions were after depth in the midfield and it looks as if they will be able to achieve that with the picks they will take to the draft. They were also able to refresh and youthen their midfield with the additions of young star Jacob Hopper, premiership player Will Langford, Billy Stretch, Liam Duggan (an excellent replacement for Rich) and Jimmy Toumpas to replace the likes of Rich, Robinson, Zorko and Beams. Cutler [scenario], Cameron and Hewett were casualties as the Lions sought to trade up to earlier in the draft, but those types may be able to be replaced via the draft and Lewis Taylor will continue to fulfil that position in the meantime.

Draft Position: The Lions traded from having three picks in the first round (Picks 1, 15 and 18) and three in the third round to having five first round picks (Picks 4, 11, 13, 14 and 15) and one in the second round. Pick 4 - ANDREW BRAYSHAW (balanced midfielder)

The Lions grab Andrew Brayshaw with Pick 4 as one of their targeted top four players and further increase their mdifield depth. As a midfielder, there really isn’t much Brayshaw doesn’t do. He is just as prominent in contested situations as in space and while the endurance results have grabbed most of the headlines, he has a turn of speed that can catch his opponents off guard. He has a high football IQ and seems to instinctively know when to make offensive or defensive decisions. He gets to the offensive side of a stoppage whenever possible, but isn’t a one way runner. He will block, protect and run frantically to lay a tackle when the opportunity presents. Brayshaw is also an extremely underrated kick, operating at high efficiency levels despite the contested nature of his disposals.

Pick 11 - JARROD BRANDER. (Key Position Tall Forward / Defender)

The Lions traded into Pick #11 with this young key position player in mind and so with this pick they get their man. Brander is probably the best key-position player available in the draft. He's a good overhead mark who has the ability to have a commanding influence on a game.Able to occupy a key-position role at either end of the field, the 194 cm Brander has done so effectively throughout the year. His intercept work in defence is promising, but he perhaps enjoyed his best performance of the season playing forward for the Allies. On that occasion he presented well, high up the field and worked hard back to goal. As such the Lions see him as an excellent complement for their promising young forward Eric Hipwood and as a replacement for current centre half-forward Josh Walker.

Pick 13 - NICK COFFIELD. (General Defender/Outside Midfielder)

The Lions are surprised Nick Coffield is still available at this pick and had no hesitation in calling his name, when their turn came. Coffield is a general defender who has excellent closing speed, good game sense, solid skills and can create plenty of drive out of the back half. He ran a 2.91-second 20-metre sprint at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, which highlighted his brilliant take-off pace and movement. At almost 191cm, Coffield is also a nice size to match up on a range of forwards, and because of his pace he can also be used to shut down quicker, smaller types who present a threat. He averaged 21 disposals at TAC Cup level this season and uses the ball well out of the backline. He was also captain of the Knights, highlighting his strong leadership qualities. Coffield's ability to take the game forward was also evident in his scoring power. He averaged nearly a goal a game at TAC Cup level this season (13 in 16 appearances for the Knights), which included a four-goal haul in the opening game of the season. Coffield can also play as a composed midfielder who is very good under pressure. and he reminds them of one Hugh McCluggage where he has plenty of time with ball in hand in the contest. Coffield is a clean user on his right foot and his defensive efforts are strong where he floats around and wins the ball at ease.

Pick 14 - ZAC BAILEY (Inside Midfielder)

The Lions go for another inside midfielder at #14 to further add to their midfield depth. Bailey possesses elite speed, in particular his acceleration which is far greater than majority of the other midfielders likely to be selected in the opening two rounds of the 2017 Draft. His time of 2.98 seconds in the 20m sprint at the AFL Draft Combine, was in the top 10 for all players who tested at the National Combine. It isn’t just off the field where he shows his speed, but during games it is notable. In one such passage against Vic Metro in the National Under 18 Championships, Bailey burst from the centre bounce at speed (with only a few minutes remaining on the clock) with ball in hand – kicking it long inside 50.

Bailey uses the ball well by foot, finding options with ease short or long. During the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships for the Allies, Bailey averaged nine kicks, kicking at 66.7 per cent efficiency. However – this stats are effected by the clash against South Australia where Bailey went at 30.8 per cent. He didn’t miss a target against Western Australia, while against champions Vic Metro – 11 of Bailey’s 12 kicks were effective. Compared with other inside midfielders in the draft pool – the 66.7 per cent is well above average.

Bailey’s defensive work and tackling numbers are always high – with the inside midfielder hunting the ball back with venom. In the National Under 18 Championships, he averaged 4.5 tackles per game – putting him in the top group of midfielders.

Pick 15 - LOCHIE O'BRIEN (Outside Midfielder)

This pick was a difficult one for the Lions who thought long and hard about a number of candidates with their final pick until the middle and late stages of the draft. Having picked up the likes of Brayshaw and Bailey, the Lions decided to add futher outside speed to their line-up. Lochie O'Brien is a classy outside midfielder who is likened to former Roo and Saint Nick Dal Santo.

He is a traditional left footer in the sense of having a weapon for a boot and he knows how to find space and gather the ball cleanly. He possesses elite speed which can help him burst away on the outside at speed. He's a good decision maker and is someone you want to have the ball in their hands. He impressed last year for Vic Country as a bottom-ager playing on the wing, a position that allows for him to be a receiver on the outside where he can clear the ball via a pinpoint pass. However his best position might well be on the half-back flank where he can settle his team down, make smart decisions and where he rarely makes a error by foot.

Pick 33 - CONNOR BALLENDEN (Key Position Tall Forward / Ruck)

One of the best key-position talents in this year’s draft, Ballenden is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch from a sparse academy group. The 199cm utility has played in a variety of roles throughout the season. He came into the year as a key forward, but perhaps played his best footy as a key defender. Ballenden also spent periods in the ruck, where he was promising. He’s a raking kick, which is arguably his best asset. The key forward won the kicking test, being the only prospect to kick a perfect score from six kicks. The 18-year-old is no stranger to the Club, having spent two weeks training with the Senior Lions squad during the summer as part of the AFL Academy program. In 2017, Ballenden played alongside the Lions Premiership NEAFL team, kicking two goals in the Grand Final to help the Lions come away with a narrow three-point victory. He played seven senior NEAFL games with the Lions this season, kicking 10 goals. Assessing that Ballenden would still be likely to be available in the thirities and not wishing to use a first rounder on him, the Lions traded down from Pick 18 to Pick 23 and then to Pick 33 in order to trade into the Top 4 and then add Nathan Vardy to their tall stocks.

Post Trade Period Summary:

A reasonably quite trade period in comparison with some of the other clubs, based on my assessment of list profile of the Bulldogs, I am of the thinking that the current list has sufficient talent and depth to challenge the top 4 in 2018.

The need for a genuine ruckman was determined early on in the trade period, the idea of this was to bring in a quality ruckman in order to free up players such as Boyd, Roughead and the newly acquired Jackson Trengove as well as providing some quality years to Tim English to continue his development, I was able to agree a trade with North Melbourne for Todd Goldstein, sending Tom Liberatore the other way. The loss of Liberatore wasn't ideal but necessary as I felt the inclusion of a guy like Goldstein represented a significant need. Ideally I would have liked to bring in a key forward and as such held discussions with several clubs however a suitable deal could not be reached. Ultimately I feel that the inclusion of Schache coupled with Tom Boyd returning to senior football in 2018 will provide the Bulldogs with an adequate key forward threat.

I received numerous offers for Bontempelli and McCrae however I saw little value in trading these players as the club is aiming for a tilt at another premiership, trading players of this calibre out for draft picks or players was nonsensical in my opinion.

I made clear to clubs that picks 9 and 16 would be available for quality players, after discussions with several clubs regarding some possible trades, I settled on a deal to send 16 to Richmond in exchange for Marc Murphy, it was thought that Murphy can add some extra class to an already solid midfield.

All up I am happy with the period, the addition of Todd Goldstein and Marc Murphy, coupled with the already counted additions of Jackson Trengove, Josh Schache and Hayden Crozier, the Western Bulldogs should have a list here that can challenge for top 4 honours in 2018. Ultimately I was happy to hang onto pick 9 and take that into the draft. Pre draft my list size is 40, picks 9 and 82 will take that to 42, with the rookie draft to fill the remaining spots on the list.

Fergus Greene was delisted to make room on the primary list, the aim is re-draft via the rookie draft.

Thought you traded really well. I do t rate sheppard and to get Fasolo for him which was also a need for that side was good and then giving up two blokes who haven’t played and getting cousins and brand back v good. You also got in two elite midfielders in martin and Merrett without giving one up. i thought Vardy had a ngodo year but u needed an inside mid and you traded a surplus player to fill it.

Rich and Jack deals deal neither he nor there but you Didn’t give much up for them.
