Here is my proposal for a new AFL season format:

  • cut two Vic teams - leaving 8 Vic + 8 Non-Vic
  • create two conferences:
- all Vic teams in one
- all non-Vic teams in the other
- each team plays:
- each team in their conference twice (14 matches)
- each team in the other conference once (8 matches)
- total of 21 matches
  • top 5 from each conference play finals
  • GF for Vic conference always at the MCG (keeps the Vics happy)
  • GF for non-Vic conference at home of highest ranked team (keeps non-Vics happy)
  • Ultimate final for two GF winners at neutral venue.

We aren’t cutting s**t, Jack.

So Victorian sides travel 4 times a season, while non-Vic sides have to travel 10 times a season.

Sounds fair to me.

Cut the plastic franchise team in Adelaide, since SA is not producing enough draftees.

First of all 14 + 8 = 22.

Second of all the competition will expand in numbers before it contracts. The AFL has a huge contract in place on the condition they provide 9 games per week (except of course for bye rounds) - they will do everything in their power to ensure the current 18 clubs are viable so they don't breach that contract and as I say will actually be looking to increase the number of teams thus increasing revenue.

At the current rate of expansion, we can expect the next team to enter the competition in the mid to late part of this decade (Tassie looking most likely) with a 20th team coming soon after and then the next round of expansion will probably be 15-20 years after that.

I don’t think we will wait long until a 20th team enters the competition though, especially if you look at recent history with how the AFL don’t like a odd number of teams in their competitions, as soon as it started adding in non-Victorian franchises (rightly or wrongly).

Let’s say Tasmania does enter the competition in 2027 (most likely date now), a 20th team license (out of ACT or NT) can easily come in between 2030-2035, providing they have the correct support and resources given to them.

Personally, if I was to create a 20 year plan of what future expansion looks like in the AFLM/AFLW competitions, something like this would work quite well to allow all states and territories around Australia to be represented in the AFL competitions for both male and female counterparts:

2027- Tasmania Devils enters AFL Men’s Competition
(6x Hobart | 6x Launceston)-(24 Round Season)

2030- Tasmania Devils enters AFL Women’s Competition
(5x Hobart | 5x Launceston)-(20 Round Season)

2033- Canberra Kookaburras enters AFL Men’s Competition
(10x Canberra | 2x Wagga Wagga)-(24 Round Season)

2036- Canberra Kookaburras enters AFL Women’s Competition
(8x Canberra | 2x Wagga Wagga)-(20 Round Season)

2038- North Melbourne Kangaroos rebrands as “Northern Kangaroos” in AFL Men’s Competition
(6x Melbourne | 4x Darwin | 2x Alice Springs)-(24 Round Season)

2040- North Melbourne Kangaroos rebrands as “Northern Kangaroos” in AFL Women’s Competition
(4x Melbourne | 3x Darwin | 3x Alice Springs)-(20 Round Season)

Would completely ruin the new tv broadcasting rights deal

Actually prefer the current fixture consisting of Geelong and Sydney playing North x 2, GWS x 2, Gold Coast x 2, West Coast x 2 and Adelaide x 2. Then the rest of the games at Kardinia and SCG respectively.

And big four doubling up against each other. Seems fairer. All Teams aren’t as cooked for finals.

Conferences will never happen in AFL football.
Why not? All of the major US sports leagues have conferences - yes, admittedly they all have around 30 teams, but I think we can benefit from that model too.

For the Vic supporters:
  • more all Vic matches.
  • GF between two Vic teams at the MCG.
  • 5 Vic teams make finals every year.

For the non-Vic supporters:
  • more all non-Vic matches a week.
  • GF between two non-Vic teams at the highest ranked team's home.
  • 5 non-Vic teams make finals every year.

For everybody:
  • 10 teams make finals every year.
  • more finals footy.
  • 3x GFs.

The negatives:
- one less home and away match per week.

Surely the positives far out-weigh the one negative?

"Why not? All of the major US sports leagues have conferences" There is your answer. This is not America (Population 330 million). Conferences will never happen in Australian Rules football.
More relevant is that the AFLW did have conferences.

And everyone hated it.

This sucks.

Instead, bring it back to 12 minute quarters, play a full double round robin with midseason games every week, and every final is a best of 3 series.
