Proposal For Summer Football

I'm always incensed when people say 'stupid' and don't necessarily provide a reason why.

It would be far move cost effective to move the state leagues to the summer then establishing new clubs as an expansion of the NT league, these new clubs will need to be propped up for years until they establish themselves. It is far easier to use the state leagues where the infrastructure already exists as well as a dedicated fan base.
There' s forty-something players on each AFL club's list. For the players that aren't in the team from week to week, what do you expect the guys to be doing if there's no state league to play in during the AFL season??
I supose we should just create a reserves competition while we're at it right?

I think the important point of this idea is that it takes the state leagues out of competition with the AFL for supporters and broadcasters. This means more people will go to state league games and these clubs will become financially stronger.
So instead of competiting with the AFL, they'll be competiting with soccer, cricket, general summer activities (beach, holidays, etc).
The newly created Foxtel Cup is already giving the state leagues more exposure.

If you're really starved of footy in the off season, then the NT league is the go. There's no need for any expansion clubs there, just TV exposure.

No way would you get the local league to move to summer. Not a chance.

However, I wouldn’t mind seeing the AFL introduce an NBA style summer league played at the dome or even in Darwin where AFL clubs get the opportunity to play, promote and introduce rookies (basically anyone under 20 years of age) into their playing system. Have it played over weekend (Thursday to Sunday night) a week after the rookie draft in say early December.

Clubs would still have their normal 42 senior listed players on their primary list and then you get to pick up an extra 12 or 13 rookies listed players in the rookie draft before deciding on the final list lodgment on 10th of December.

AFL 9's would be the way to go. Smaller ground, faster pace, more scoring. Games would have to be under an hour as this is good for TV and deals with the heat issue.

Why not have new privately owned franchises much the same style as the new T20 league. Stars from the various state leagues could play and this would supplement their income.

As for the stadium debate, botique grounds would be the way to go. Summer AFL wouldn't be drawing more than 20k to games.

Why not have the NTFL play their games and broadcast on abc 2 or something for a few years and if there's intrest maybe expand it to northern wa and qld. Or leave it and keep showing it.
Then if you want to watch Footy Friday night, sat and sun during summer you can.
Or not watch it. They wouldn't need to telivise every game

What about creating a new leauge, all 18 teams BUT with no AFL listed players, instead the teams choose the best footballers from local clubs who want to play for said afl club kinda like the old days.

Yes its obtuse, yes it could be costly but it would be great desperate football and would potentially unearth some stars. Players would be payed $500 a week and housed, fed etc for the duration of the competition before reciving a small dividend of the profits made at the end of the season.

It would allow for further advancement of the games tactics too, imagine being able to assemble a 28 - 30 player list from a hundered players, the variety would allow for some interesting team compositions.

And at the end of said season, have a draft and send those drafted home for a couple of months before being made available for selection around round 6.

I have the answer.

  1. All games played in Melbourne Etihad undercover to beat the heat.
  2. Modified rules
  3. 1 team per state ie: Perth pr0n Stars, Adelaide Angels, Melbourne MILF's, Queensland Hotties, Sydney Scarlet's, Tassie Teasers, NT Nymph's and the ACT XXX's
  4. All girl teams of course wearing not much at all.
  5. 4 quarters of 15m each with a strip show at halftime.
  6. Cheaper tickets
Would have to get at least a few thousand to the games hey .... :D
C'mon VLAD make it happen!

Just put NTFL 2 games every weekend, friday and saturday night maybe. On the ABC at 7.

People can get their football fix without it being shoved in their face and some new talent might be discovered (eg Waylon Manson this year)

I think it's a very good idea. The state leagues attendences would increase dramatically. The 1 problem is the weather but professional athletes should be able to battle through it, especially during the evening.

The only reason the Soccer season is on during the summer is because if they go head to head with Football and Rugby during the winter they wouldnt last one season before folding.
That is one reason but another is they want the season to be at the same time as the European one.

I would like to see a summer competition in Nines format run by the state leagues culminating in a national champion.

1. "9-a-side" played on boutique grounds.
2. Short games played at night for TV consumption.
3. Possible international sides invited.
4. Each state league to run it's own conference culminating in national playoffs.

The series would be self-funding or even profitable.
It would be a vehicle to lauch AFL internationally.
People who complain about IR, SOO, NAB or lack of anything to do will have an option(if not just another option to complain about).
Personally cricket just doesn't do it like it did before and there are lots of people wanting summer action.
And if you don't like it then just continue watching cricket.

I think its good that AFL is only played for half of the year,

I enjoy other sports in summer and never get sick of either, Cricket, Soccer ect

It may benefit the other leagues you mention VFL ect if they can get more major exposure on television.

Work like the off season NBA league or whatever they do to give fringe players a chance to show form ect before a draft

One of the big problems with football is that it is a seasonal sport, it does not get exposure all year round and even when it is played in winter the season is relatively short when compared to other sports like soccer (off memory the english premier league goes for 38 weeks).

Actually this is one of the problems with other sporting codes.

The AFL has the number of games just right, most of the other sports, particularly soccer, baseball, and basketball suffer from oversaturation and too many meaningless games.

That's why any summer league should have distinctively different flavour.

I take it you are a fan of Lingerie Bowl in the US?

I'm a fan of anything with sport and lingerie!
  • Lingerie gymnastics
  • Lingerie wrestling
  • Lingerie tennis

You can tell i've been married for 10 years huh..... ;)

Who can set up a poll to see who would go to a ALFL game? :p
(Australian Lingerie Football League - These girls like playin with balls)

As much as I miss footy at this time of the year, I don't wanna see footy at all during the summer. The more you miss footy, the more appreciate it during the season I think.

+1

Gotta have time to miss something to truly appreciate it.
