Proposed new Hobart stadium - Macquarie Point

The new stadium entity to own Tasmania's stadium has indicated it will look at building a roof on one of Tassie's stadiums with Bellerive the logical choice for that, will be interesting to see what they come up with.

They've gotta stop spending money on Bellerive. We see across Australia that the most "successful" stadia are in, or are only a stone's throw away from CBDs.

Bellerive is a rubbish, suburban location, the car parking is dog s**t, and it sits on this land that would be worth a crazy amount of money. Whether it's Macquarie Point, whether buying up the TCA ground and some of the surrounds is a cheaper option, s**t, it could even be Elwick (although that's not as good a location), that's where the money needs to be heading now if we're talking about an AFL team in 2025.

How do you think we are going to get the money for that?....You would be looking at half a billion at least for a new stadium, so I don't see government willing to put that much money into a stadium when we have two stadium's that have already had a lot spent on them.

Sell Bellerive, combine Hobart Tigers, North Hobart, Tas Cricket and whoever uses those other ovals into a redesigned upgraded Memorial Oval and then use TCA ground as the new Stadium.

Tennis, Swimming, Athletics and the new Stadium all within city limits.

He said on his tour of Tasmania that he considers the two current stadiums more than suitable.
That's a shame.

York Park is suitable, like Kardinia Park was suitable in the 90s. Gets the job done, but need to rebuild the grandstands quadrant by quadrant to modernise the facilities.

Bellreive is really just in the worst possible location. That building behind the goals left of screen ain't great either.

Although, just because Bellerive is suitable to establish a team, it doesn’t mean the State Government can’t decide to build a new oval in a better location. Even if it after 5 years of the team being established, where it can be proven they can draw a crowd and deserve a bigger venue.

Yes that is true, they could. More likely to happen if the AFL stipulate it as a condition for the license.

What happens if crowds don't show up tho? Look at Ports crowds Footy Park v Adelaide Oval.

You mean the TCA pavilions? They didn't think it through in regards to Clarence FC, let alone future AFL game when they built those, standing under them during a footy game is a experience though

Former Tasmania Premier Peter Gutwein has been announced as the head of The Stadiums Tasmania group with the new Hobart stadium and UTAS upgrade the first projects planned.
