Well, I got to tell you, I wasn't that impressed with the game. You can look at the game in a whole variety of ways.

Geelong are bottom of the ladder, but then again, they lost to Brisbane by 14 points in a really tight contest.

So what are the pro's and con's..... feel free to add your own, I'm just trying to work out where we stand after the last round, and how we could beat Collingwood, in Melbourne.

PRO's
- Geelong aren't as bad as every say.
- We played poorly and still won.
- We showed a lot of grapefruits in the last quarter.
- Our defense was strong for most of the game.
- The are not too many Steven King's in the league to go against Gardy.
- No Kerr, Wirra, Gaspar etc..
- Chick is a one man wrecking machine, he runs, tackles, kicks goals.

CON's
- We got slaughtered out of the middle.
- They had so many run on goals, from ruck contests, marking contests. I counted TWO goals, from Mili spoiling the ball straight to one of the Geelong crumbers. Was it's Milli's fault for spoiling to a hot spot (unlikely, the spoil was good enough), or was it the fault of the small men? We normally do this so well, look at Sampi earlier on. I've always been suspect of our little back men, and although in general they were good yesterday, they were at fault on a lot of occasions.
- Plenty of our midfielders yesterday, don't play well defensively. So we are without Kerr, but with Cus limping and Fletch and Judd not really putting in the other way, perhaps we should have had a run with player with one of theirs.
- Geelong are bottom of the ladder.

Where is Collica? Is he that down on form? Howser? Hulk? I guess that I have three worries for next week ...

1. matching their big forwards.

2. Having a strong forward presence.

3. making sure our midfield is accountable.

answers..

1. Well, they have three big talls, Rocca, Tarrant and Molloy. Do we bring in Glass? Does Jako go back?

2. Personally, I thought that we were crying out for a reliable leading forward yesterday, a strong pack mark. Yes we looked very good when giving Fido and the Answer (corn-rows, huge vertical ...it's a long straw, but maybe he can be our Allen Iverson!), and then they could lead into the space, but at some stage, we need someone who can stand up and take a big mark, when we can't create that space.

Haynes took one pack mark, and it was no where near a mark! I still believe that we need one of the following at FF - Howser, Hulk or the Train.

3. Well, the pies have a better midfield than the cats. But it could be a different case. I think that we will pay the pies midfield more respect, and issue some run with roles, which I don't think we did against the cats. Chick to Buckley? Kerr in ... whatever the case, two things will make our midfield look better. Clearing the ball from bounces etc... and tightening up around the ground.

household changes after a win? perhaps, Kerr, Wirra, Train/Howser, Collica?

rant over

McDougall played well on Saturday as did Glass. Wilson is injured and Johnson played well. Lynch played well but it seems we are grooming him for a backline position rather than a forward one. He looks to have lost weight but then again maybe he has just converted his bulk. McDougall and Johnson don't have that much experience and putting them in in a game that we need to win isn't going to help us but if we need to add a tall I guess giving McDougall a run couldn't hurt. With Gaspar and Cox out we will need to cover the ruck as well. Seaby has been playing well.

As we are against Collingwood we need to look at their Ruck. Fraser wasn't that dominant and the majority of their hitouts were by McKee. Could Gardiner ruck all day against these two with someone like Jako, Carrol or McIntosh taking the ruck in the back line? I think it would be worth a try as our Midfielders are running themselves ragged and we need to get our rotation in this area working well if we are to beat the Pies.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We need Duncan back ASAP. I'm not surprised our midfield struggled without him. Like it or not, he is a big part of our team now... a vital cog in the wheel... with him the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts... you know how it is...

EDIT: If Cox is out, I wouldn't be surprised to see Seaby make his debut...

I agree that we need two ruckmen.

McKee and Fraser havent been in great form, but Rocca also does some rucking for the Pies too. Id like for Gardy to be able to take a breathr at some point, and if Cox isnt fit then we have to blood the next ruckman.

The idea that scares me is the possibility of Trent Carroll playing on Tarrant :/

I reckon Collica should be called up and given the challenge straight up.

Chris Tarrant Adam Hunter

I think Hunter could be given Tarrant.

Buckley is Chick's b*tch [apparently] so I would go with him. Licuria will go with Cuz. Fletcher will probably go against Woewoedin while Judd will go with O'bree [I'm guessing].

Wilson injured? Didnt know about that

I think us not having a strong FF is going to come back and hurt us. On the weekend we had a pretty small forward line and someone like Lynch or Wilson hitting the packs hard wouldve made Sampi and Materas job heaps easier

This week we need to make the following changes:

IN:

Collica or Glass
Lynch or Wilson
Kerr (if fit)
Second ruckman (if Cox doesnt come up, what about Sierra??)
Chambers/Wooden (if Cousins is rested)

OUT:

Cousins (rest if injured)
Cox (rest)
1 or 2 other players will also have to make way for a FF & defender

Didnt know that Chick had a good record against Buckley, but if that's the case then Chick is the man for him.

I too expect Licuria to take Cousins. As for Woewoedin, he was given way too much space against Adelaide and he killed them. Id consider throwing Rowan Jones up against him on the wing.

trent carrol on tarrant i think that is a big ask this guy has the marking ability to ruin our day if he marks any where from 1-55 under a closed roof at telstra plus i think milli is still our best option on him

Let them match up on Chick
Exactly! It is Collingwood who need to be worried. Going into the game it is the Eagles who are the form team after winning three in a row whereas Collingwood only just scraped in for a win.

I like the idea of bringing in Doogs to play a roving CHF/Ruck with Gardiner against McKee and Fraser.
But can he match it with them for extended periods of time?? Dont forget that Gardiner is absolutely spent come the end of the game and needs some decent support

Good question. At this stage, I don't think Doogs has the body to ruck at AFL level- if he plays, keep him at CHF.

As for backing up Gardie, assuming Cox isn't healthy, there are a few possibilities- either we bring in a specialist ruckman like Seaby or Johnson, or rely on someone like Jakovich to do the backup work. Given that Gardie is coming off a dose of the flu, I think we need to go into this game with two specialist ruckmen, and absolutely smash Collingwood in the ruck- if we can get the sort of usage out of the middle we did against Fremantle or St Kilda, we'll win.

Adelaide absolutely flogged Collingwood in the ruck last weekend. Collingwood still won the centre breaks. I think we should give Lynch/MacDougall a recall and leave Gardiner to do the centre ruckwork while Jako or Milli carries the ruck in the back line and Lynch/MacDougall when it goes forward. We can't afford to bring in 2 talls as that would throw out our team balance. Where we will win it is in the midfield or rebounding from half back.
