Well, I got to tell you, I wasn't that impressed with the game. You can look at the game in a whole variety of ways.
Geelong are bottom of the ladder, but then again, they lost to Brisbane by 14 points in a really tight contest.
So what are the pro's and con's..... feel free to add your own, I'm just trying to work out where we stand after the last round, and how we could beat Collingwood, in Melbourne.
PRO's
- Geelong aren't as bad as every say.
- We played poorly and still won.
- We showed a lot of grapefruits in the last quarter.
- Our defense was strong for most of the game.
- The are not too many Steven King's in the league to go against Gardy.
- No Kerr, Wirra, Gaspar etc..
- Chick is a one man wrecking machine, he runs, tackles, kicks goals.
CON's
- We got slaughtered out of the middle.
- They had so many run on goals, from ruck contests, marking contests. I counted TWO goals, from Mili spoiling the ball straight to one of the Geelong crumbers. Was it's Milli's fault for spoiling to a hot spot (unlikely, the spoil was good enough), or was it the fault of the small men? We normally do this so well, look at Sampi earlier on. I've always been suspect of our little back men, and although in general they were good yesterday, they were at fault on a lot of occasions.
- Plenty of our midfielders yesterday, don't play well defensively. So we are without Kerr, but with Cus limping and Fletch and Judd not really putting in the other way, perhaps we should have had a run with player with one of theirs.
- Geelong are bottom of the ladder.
Where is Collica? Is he that down on form? Howser? Hulk? I guess that I have three worries for next week ...
1. matching their big forwards.
2. Having a strong forward presence.
3. making sure our midfield is accountable.
answers..
1. Well, they have three big talls, Rocca, Tarrant and Molloy. Do we bring in Glass? Does Jako go back?
2. Personally, I thought that we were crying out for a reliable leading forward yesterday, a strong pack mark. Yes we looked very good when giving Fido and the Answer (corn-rows, huge vertical ...it's a long straw, but maybe he can be our Allen Iverson!), and then they could lead into the space, but at some stage, we need someone who can stand up and take a big mark, when we can't create that space.
Haynes took one pack mark, and it was no where near a mark! I still believe that we need one of the following at FF - Howser, Hulk or the Train.
3. Well, the pies have a better midfield than the cats. But it could be a different case. I think that we will pay the pies midfield more respect, and issue some run with roles, which I don't think we did against the cats. Chick to Buckley? Kerr in ... whatever the case, two things will make our midfield look better. Clearing the ball from bounces etc... and tightening up around the ground.
household changes after a win? perhaps, Kerr, Wirra, Train/Howser, Collica?
