PLAYTV AUSTRALIA IMPRESSIONS
Annoyed that you missed Iron Chef last night? Disgruntled because you had to duck out to the bathroom during the *insert sporting code here* grand finals and you missed the most memorable moment of the game? Getting crabby because you're about to go on holidays for a week and you'll be out of touch with your friends in Summer Bay the entire time?

Well, turn that frown upside down. PlayTV is here to ensure you don't miss a second of oh-so-important television time. It comes along on the heels of set top boxes like Tivo, services like Foxtel iQ and hardware like PC TV tuner cards. It's not in any way new, in other words, but in this case it's affordable, convenient and – for the most part – pretty user friendly.

Does it only recorded FTA or can it be used for Foxtel as well? If so i think I'll get one.

Still happy with it, Nick?

Can't be used with foxtel as it doesn't have any AV in.

I'm still really happy with it, My PS3 follows me upstairs and down to play my TV shows and when upstairs I use Play TV to essentially be a Digital tuner.

It's easy to use to record programs.

I'd probably get more use out of it if my PS3 was always in the same place and plugged in as I'm constantly moving it the play TV is sometimes plugged in and sometimes not.

I'd be interested to see if there are any differences in the Aussie version.

Noob question here, but anyway...

Hypothetically speaking, if I recorded a show from PlayTV, could I store it on an external HD? Then play it back off the external HD?

It depends.

When you record the show is stored within Play TV

You can use the option 'export to XMB' which places it on your PS menu where it can be treated as any video file on your PS including copying to an external drive.

The only issue is that external drives for the PS3 need to be in FAT32 format and that format has a maximum file size of 4gb. This means that most of the recording will be too big and as yet there is no way to transfer larger files off the PS3.

Ah that sucks, cheers for the information though. Looks like i'll probably have to update my PS3 HD or buy a regular dig recorder.

i have a FAT32 format external Hard drive which is 500gb, so ill be able to copy any file size yeah?

Have a full PS3 harddrive of footy flashbacks thanks to this. Seeing SOS, Kouta, Sticks again = win. Love it.

I'd love to get this little device, but being only able to put 4GB of data onto an external HD is really crappy. Either I'd have to update my PS3 HD (which I have NFI how to do, or what kind of HD I need to get.) Or buy a normal high-def recorder which are fairly expensive by themselves.

Hopefully they'll add a video splitting feature ASAP. Agree that it's pretty poor.

The PS3 HDD is just a notebook drive. They are quite cheap.

Surley they intergrate eyecreate editor into the one XMB allowing us to edite hi-def footage thus making it smaller than 4gb and allow us to be able to export the footage to a PC or just upload is straight to the internet.

I can't seem to find that option, I think due to Australian recording regulations it has been banned.

You can get it back, or so I'm told, by researching for channels and selecting "other" instead of Australia. However you'll lose SBS which is the trade-off.

Interesting, however since the tv shows are going to be so big anyway I don't know if I can put them on my computer. That's not even considering the fact my PS3 hard drive is twice as big as my computer HDD.

I only connect PlayTV when I have something to record, I'm not going to watch TV through my PS3 all the time.
