Anyway unfortunately it looks like we are headed towards picking Skipworth at Pick 5 and we all know realistically we are not going to pick Cousins. Sure he would be a great addition and could potentially play for another 3-4 years but the club, along with 14 other clubs obviously had serious reservations about Cousins that we may never find out.

I'd give De Boer a crack.

Actually RIG, not sticking up for bombersno1 here, but I did have DeBoer going in the late second round region and I have seen a fair bit of his footy. Really stood out as that running type, would just continually provide run for WA and did okay in some of his senior WAFL performances. Is a nice sized midfielder and his never say die attitude I would've thought would be quite appealing to recruiters. It wasn't the case on draft day, clearly, but I'd be very, very surprised if he wasn't picked up in the rookie draft.

His kicking was an issue, and still is a major issue, but if you put that aside, he had the potential to go top ten with his run, carry and tenacity around contests. Really does tick most of the boxes, but that kicking really does need a bit of work clearly. If he can go on a club's rookie list and get that skill (kicking) up to a higher level, he could prove to be one of the steals of the rookie draft, or from the draft as a whole.

To be fair you had in the late second region whereas bombersno1 wanted him at pick 5. The only people talking him up as a high first round draft pick were the ones watching YouTube highlights.

bombersno1 has a go at him about his kicking yet it was just as bad last year and earlier this season.

Ah okay, now I can see why BNO1 deserved a slap on the head.

Can see why you got a bit annoyed with BNO1 in that case as it was quite evident that the kids going top ten these days do have above average skills, not a below average skills set. Skills as I have mentioned before, are essential. Kicking with both feet soon will be essential to.

We should rate the EFC list and determine who is above average and below average at kicking.

I am a hard marker when it comes to kicking.

When considering the issue of Cousins and I am aware that Richmond is looking like his new home!!

Thought-out my work career I have come into contact with people on drugs and my experience is that when a person is addicted to drugs they become good at one thing

Lying! they will tell you what you want to hear and are very convincing at it!

Yes that sounds harsh but actions speak louder than words and I would imagine that both St Kilda and Collingwood have done wide ranging research into Cousins.

They will know things that may or may not be in the public domain and with due respect to Ben Cousins for he may well have cleaned up his act and everyone is allowed to make mistakes but sadly due to the way Drugs impact on the addict and based on the general situation at WCE which every other club would have known about Cousins is too big a risk.

In regards to Essendon, one of the things about our club is regardless of our great our club is our very own heartland was home to most the main players in the Melbourne Underground war therefore I'm not sure if our club is the right home for him.

I also look at the clubs culture and apart from one or two we have a good young group and we need to be mindful what is the culture of our club.

Does Ben Cousins fit that culture, football wise yes behaviour wise no and there is more to a football cub than getting a kick on the phonedome

spot on bombermania - cousins hasn't shown enough remorse for mine and still appears to enjoy rebelling. i can't see the point in taking the risk on a 30yo with his baggage. what cousins could potentially do is:
(A) reduce the playing time of guys like houli, lonergan and so on in the midfield
(B) lead some promising young players astray

i'd rather stick with the midfield we have adding another young player like cockie or de boer to the squad. in addition i do think skipworth being 5 years younger than cousins is also a better option so have no issue if thats who they take.

Deboer would be a great project player for us!

He can't kick... So what?... Nothing that our coaching staff can't work on...

He's still the best youngster to come out of the PSD.. Rookie drafting him would be bloody grouse, but highly doubt he'll be passed up on by anyone.

I was actually being facetious. If you deem 70% of AFL footballers are "below average" in their kicking skills, quite simply, you've got your average/benchmark wrong. By definition, very close to 50% of footballers will be above "average", and 50% below. Being a "hard marker" (ie. having higher expectations than reality allows) is the crux of it.

But yes, would be an interesting exercise.

I have more of a problem with Ben's response (shaving down pre hair test, going to funeral of convicted drug importer last month, maintaining "inappropriate" connections etc.) than his drug use/addiction. I'm all for supporting someone battling addiction and giving someone a second chance, but he's basically been thumbing his nose at the AFL and putting himself above all else, ever since this all came to light. As you said, he seems to enjoy being the bad boy and has at no stage appeared to be 100% fairdinkum about turning over a new leaf.

Ben needs to learn some humility. Unfortunately, Richmond look like preventing him from learning that valuable life lesson. :o I truly hope he gets his sh1t together and doesn't flush his life and football career down the toilet, but I won't be holding my breath.

I actually feel sick sometimes with how strongly Cousins is being judged by people who have the media as their only connection to him. The AFL took a tough line with him not for his sake but for theirs. I know most people will say, if they agree with that premise, that that's fair enough (the organisation has given him --and so many others-- so much, and needs to be protected, etc), and I have no problem with that. My problem is that the AFL then expects Cousins to accept whatever terms and conditions they set out to protect themselves (or their image). Again, I think most people would say that the hair testing is nothing major. But it is in principle, I think. To tell someone that they can only join an organisation if they forfeit a basic freedom (such as cutting your hair to whatever length you want) is a major thing. Can anyone say for certain that the AFL are justified demanding Cousins forfeit that freedom to play league footy? Really? Even after you consider that such addiction is an illness that often requires more than just the individual to be overcome? Even when you consider the likely outcomes of a relapse? What will they be? Cousins hits the nightclubs the night before training? Before a match? So what? Bad for his club, yes, but that sort of thing is nothing new, and isn't itself justification for demanding he forfeit his freedom. Bad for the kids? If your kids are at the nightclub then they're probably already going to be screwed up by your parenting anyway. But what about the pics in the paper -- the kids will see them, right? Yes, but do we just tolerate lowest common denominator journalism like that (of which the quoted post is a reproduction of)? Do we let that dictate how we treat the players that have given us so much? What is really going on here???

I think the other two citations (in the above quote) of Cousins' dodginess give a clue (though I don't claim to know anything for sure, I'm just sensitive to people judging others so harshly): 1. Going to a drug dealers funeral...WTF?? That b*stard! How dare he? He's off the rails, that's for sure. Everyone knows going to a dealer's funeral is a certain path to relapse. Quick, get his tears to forensics! Coffin, man? Yeah, it's been a while, gotta cof' to get off.... 2. "maintaining 'inappropriate' connections"?? What's that even saying? That's not evidence, it's just begging the question. And if the reply is: 'people have already made clear the connections...it's a reference to something that has already been expounded in the media...etc' -- *cough* *splutter*...you're judging a human being here! Every word must be clear and supported by genuine evidence! I know he's Ben Cousins, and has entertained us and vicariously given us feelings of triumph and achievement over the years, but that doesn't make any gossip about him more allowable than gossip about, say, your partner, child, parent, friend....and unsupported claims like that are just that: gossip.

I don't want Essendon to pick him up. Because I don't think it would fit in with a plausible 'premiership timetable'. Maybe he is a completely messed up person, and bringing him into the EFC would poison the wells and replace Horsborugh with Carl Williams. But my gut feeling is one of disgust when a human being --someone's son, brother, partner-- is judged with such conviction by people who consume Murdoch media nine hours before cr*pping it all back out over forums.

P.S. I realise I'm judging people for judging people. That's not a self-defeating 'paradox'. It's more like the Allies' actions in WW2: not nice, not good, but justified.

Klemke is a much better option in the PSD. We do not need players who can't kick, look at our new gameplan and you will see why. We have enough clearance players anyway.
