Yes there's an explanation for it.

It's called in the western world "blind luck".

Carlton got lucky with its zone, others not so fortunate.

A recruiter back then had far less to worry about knowing that other clubs couldn't touch a player in that zone until another team had passed them by.

And you're still passing over the fact our financial clout landed us alot of great players because we could ffer them more than alot of our rivals could.

Blind Luck is a cop out argument. A bit like "it just is, thats why".

Whilst there is an element of luck in anything you care to think of, the statistical anomaly of Bendigo v Ballarat as an example you quoted is just too great to be explained by "luck".

Why cant you just admit, it wasnt the soil in the central Victoria area, it wasnt the water in the Goulburn, it wasnt the geographical proximity to Melbourne. So it wasnt Geographical.

Perhaps the league in the area was of a superior quality to say the league in Ballarat or the Latrobe valley or anywhere else in the state and as a result produced better players, but I dont have any evidence to support this. I doubt that you do either.

So as I have suggested, perhaps our recruitment staff had better talent scouts and player development skills? Money? Well perhaps having money enabled us to have a bigger (not pants size) team but whatever the reason it wasnt geographical and it wasnt luck.

The Kernaham era was the last time we got to splash our cash around to good effect.

After that as a club our arrogance meant we were one of the last clubs to finally realise we were in a national competition and the old rules we played under weren't applicable any more.

That's why we landed in so much shit for so many years.

If we'd had someone stand up then and question our clandestine practices we might have avoided alot of that hardship.

Alas nobody did, but fortunately its now water under the bridge and we are setting ourselves up to be a modern football club and an elite force onces again.

And when exactly did you start to worry about our future and question the powers that be? October 1999? No? How about around round 20 2001? No, we were still travelling well enough for you then to not worry too much?

Back in the day clubs or rather recruitment managers (they were called talent scouts) had feeder information, local coaches etc, many ex players much as happens today. But I have no idea other than anecdotal evidence.

Different times and different keys to success. Of course, it is also worth remembering that clubs like Carlton and Collingwood spent money on developing their zones. Even simple stuff like sending footies to the schools in the area, going down for club days etc have an impact. The larger list that Carlton could support also made a difference and paying (small) bonuses to people that sent them a decent player made county coaches more likely to offload their best players.

I think we have addressed the lack of depth in our defence and future of our midfield. I'm now hoping that Waite's knee is 100% by Round 1 and 206 is on the long term injury list a while longer so Casboult can slot straight in to FF and Waite can go to CHB!

Sorry Kramer, you make a good point and it was disrespectful that you did not get an answer.

I have no idea (and I voted maybe as a result) but you know what I feel, Hughes is god and nothing bad can be said about his work.

But I look to blokes like Jamo, AJ and Sauce and think we have done pretty well from our rookies recently. Then you look at the Edwards the Hartletts etc and see not every selection will make it. And the Bentleighs and Ppiefers show that sometimes there is a reason another club didnt want someone, but again Carrots is the answer to that argument.

And whilst I couldnt be bothered going to look, I wouldnt mind betting that on each of the 16 boards, 70-80% of posters are happy with their selections, 10-20% are unhappy because Panos or Danos or Manos got overlooked and they have too many KPP players why dont the recruiters get some mids or whatever and the other 10% or so are just happy or mad no matter (probably also split 70/30).

So there really is not much point to this whole discussion yet. We just wont know for at least 4 months probably much longer as rarely does a rookie play straight up first season.

Having said that, there is also absolutely no doubt that recruiting is a) much more important than it used to be and b) much harder to do well. Just ask the the Tigers and the disaster that Miller was.

But hey it sure is an entertaining distraction from my mundane workaday life.

We seem to have stuck to our guns and picked best available across the board so I'm pleased.

Haven't seen much of these guys but it sounds promising.

I'm happy because we took a little bit from here and a little bit from there - no reactionary drafting by overloading in any particular position. Midfielders, Key Position Players both forward and back.

Obviously it's way too early to say that we had a successful draft, but we'll give a few kids a great opportunity to make it in the big league, with a proffessional environment, through the coaching staff, the players, and the off-field people, with great facilities at their disposal. It's then up to the players to grasp the opportunity of a lifetime and not let go until they hopefully make a career for themselves.

We seem to be placing a particular emphasis on players with good character, leadership and strength, so I'm betting that we'll get at least 1 success from these recruits, not only due to the environment they are placed in but the character of the individual and their desire to make it in the big league.

Wouldn't think of it as a 'dig', more a recruiter doing his job by picking the best available players.

Whether that be a midfielder or not, WH wouldn't give a crap. He is there to improve our list by bringing the talent into the club and that's exactly what he's doing.

He wouldn't give a crap what Youtube recruiters have to say about his method of recruiting. He has a steadfast rule with regards to recruiting and I'm sticking with him and his far superior judgement - particularly in the rookie draft where he has shown he is right up there with the best in the business.

At the end of the day, the proof will be in the pudding. And for that we'll have to sit tight for a little while. Until then, all we should be doing is supporting him and hoping that who he takes can develop in the manner that he and we all hope.

Yes, but at the end of the day it was Hughes that made the selection.

If Hughes didn't like him, he wouldn't have been selected as a Carlton rookie, I wouldn't have thought.

I've never quite understood this argument. All clubs have scouts...in all states, bringing blokes to people's attentions......Prendergast might have gotten credit for Jurrah, but he was most probably brought to his attention to.

We have blokes watching more WAFL than WH, maybe Simon White was "brought to his attention" too......maybe our TAC guys were a fan of Casboult

At the end of the day, clubs have lots of scouts watching leagues all over the country, but in the end it is the RM's job to agree or disagree and put a list together and call out the names.

Casboult is 198cm isn't he? I also thought Dare was a little taller, not that it makes a difference.

Some posts about it being the right thing to do to question the club so we don't repeat the mistakes of the past and that may be true, HOWEVER how on earth can you question a drafting decision without having at least the same amount of information at hand that the club had? To bag the selections or bag the fact we didn't pick someone up, surely you have to have an accompanying dossier and constructive argument to back that stance. Too many times people choose who they like the sound of and if we don't take them and they do okay at another club, they do the whole 'I told you so' bit, but in reality they didn't say anything except they wanted him to begin with.

You don't get to say 'I told you so' IMO, unless you actually displayed some knowledge in telling us so.

No point in questioning the club based on no knowledge and no definitive reasoning, or we are just being detractors for the sake of it.

I reckon I could bag every decision the club made, twist a few things around and claim a 50/50 strike rate. To be able to pump yourself up though, you have to hope the club fails in some way. It's a hell of a way to live I reckon ...

Well Yes, Yes I am very happy with the rookie draft selections. It's a shame the OP couldn't make this an 'public poll' as I suspect most of the negative votes were from opposition troll/nuff nuffs who often go and 'rig' polls on club boards (and to be fair, I've done it on other team club boards as well )

I'm no draft expert whatsoever, but I am very encouraged by what I've seen and heard about the draftees thus far.
