It's been curious, taking an interest in the Claremont Serial Killer investigation over the years why psychics and theories of the supernatural get so much cred and press. WA police, that's the cops - seem more willing to entertain even embrace the paranormal to the point where it was suggested a raid was executed on a psychic's reading.

Part of the answer may be in that a very well respected former police officer was appointed Chaplain for WA police in 1992, the first employed full time to provide religious and spiritual support within the force. Barry May performed this duty for fifteen years.

He also believed in possession and performed more than twenty exorcisms, blessed houses and cast out demons. So, there ya go. He was a ghost buster.

I've attached a PDF of the transcript of the show, as it appears that the original media is no longer available. Here's an extract of Police Chaplain Barry May talking about the Claremont Serial Killings.
"There have been many occasions in the ministries of police where I've been approached by members of the public, who've said to me I've had visions and dreams. I have taken them to the police artists and as a result of that I have many pictures of people who are supposedly murders, rapists and so on who in fact I have then passed on to macro task force, because they have an outside interest in these sorts of things."

To "Cast out Demons", one would have to believe that demonic possession is really occurring to people, in the here and now.
Article doesn't say what these demons were supposedly making these people that they possessed do though.

"Prominent Anglican priest and former police chaplain Barry May is forging a reputation as an exorcist by performing the ritual about once a fortnight around Perth.

Father Barry said an increasing number of people were seeking his help, partly because of a growing awareness about his service and partly because “the occult is awakening”.

Anglican Archbishop Roger Herft supported the priest’s work yesterday, with the Archbishop claiming he too had performed exorcisms on people and homes in a bid to cast out demons."

"Father May, a 72-year-old grandfather from Embleton, says that only one of the exorcisms he conducted on a person resembled Hollywood’s dramatic depiction of the practice. In 1987, a Manjimup woman snarled, hissed and bared her teeth as he lightly placed his hands on her and prayed for the demons to leave her body."

It's absurd, some of these people make such outrageous claims and they seem to just get away with it. Still trying to get my head around Barry May using police sketch artists to recreate images of visions and really actually saying "the occult is awakening". I get it he was probably a very nice person but it's such a reckless thing to say imo it can really frighten some people.

Father Barry May wrote some 5 books apparently.
4 of which one might describe as suitable for children.
The other, maybe not so much.

I suppose it doesn't get more real than this.
A former Police Chaplain saying it's real.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-06-30/its-real-priest-reveals-exorcism-rituals/2777946

Extract:
Father Barry May - an Anglican priest, exorcist, author and former police chaplain - has performed dozens of exorcisms in his 40 years of ministry.

The 73-year-old Perth man says more Australians are seeking exorcisms, and as such, over the past four years he has dedicated his life solely to ridding people of their demons.

Father May tells anyone sceptical about the ancient Catholic ritual to "get real" and psychologists have backed the man, saying exorcism "has its place" in society.

"I've been spat at, yelled at, grabbed at, sworn at, had people trying to rip my crucifix off my throat, gouge my eyes out, fighting, assault. I get all that stuff and you tell me it's superstition?" Father May said.

"No, get real. And that's exactly what it is, it's real.

"Forget the head spinning and the green vomit you see in the movies, but the rest of what you see in the movies is damn close to being real, it's not funny.

"It takes a lot out of me, I sweat profusely. It's a real exercise-and-a-half I tell you."

Father May says his first calling into the world of demons came in the 1970s when a woman at a funeral he was conducting asked him if he believed in ghosts.

"I thought it was a rather strange question to ask," he said.

"I told her 'yes', and she said 'well I've got a ghost in the house next door to me'. So I went to her house and dealt with it."

Since then he has developed an expertise in exorcism - casting the "evil one" out of people - and is approached by hundreds of people each year who claim to be possessed by a demon - or two.

"I remember I did one with a girl who was about 23 years of age and I kept saying to her 'are you free yet?'.

"And she would say 'no I'm not', in her own voice.

"It took hours and hours to deliver her and as soon as I said 'spirit, reveal yourself', she would growl and spit and cross her eyes.

"She threw about 12 of the demons out and she was free."

What is real?
A series of unsolved abductions, and murders in Western Australia prior to hiring a self professed Demon Hunter, as a full time Police Chaplain in 1992.
A Chaplain that police allowed to involve himself with the Macro Task Force.
A clairvoyant who claimed to of worked so closely with Police that she alleges that she was allowed onto crime scenes and was regularly consulted at a coffee shop in a shopping center by her handler, a senior detective.
What is real? I can't imagine any of this being real. What if the Commissioner of Police heard about this at the time?

I'd find it incredible that any Police Department would entertain Demon Hunters and Exorcists let alone one of their own parading themselves in public as such, but there you are, even in New York USA.

Just how intertwined to Police investigations of serious crime is this phenomenon though?

All the press aside PD, how could he not have heard about it?
Knowing about the involvement of a chaplain in active investigations of serious crimes is one thing. Condoning it is another. But it's really about the intention of it, inasmuch as whether a Police Force procures a chaplain to be a sink for palming off all the clairvoyant nonsense or a weapon against serious crimes that the Force actually thought might of been committed by Demons, or occultists, due to evidence found at crime scenes? I doubt if the former Police Commissioner would've employed a chaplain to be part of a crime fighting arsenal, but the circumstances of the former chaplain's story of his involvement as described to the media certainly are cause to ponder what was going on.

I seem to remember Gordon Wood was a bit of a psychic himself

Didn't he get a vision that Caroline Byrne was up near the gap?

I wonder which Australian cases Troy Griffin has "solved"?

Griffin’s testimony is not admissible in court, but he says he’s worked on about 100 cases in the United States, Germany, Canada and Australia — 99 percent of them unpaid.
Reads like a fluff piece and it is.

Only mentions one case and that (possibly) is one the police had already identified the perpetrators (because they arrested people ' a few hours later'

The other was an admitted bust with nobody charged.

Then it says nothing. Fluff imo

An Australian case is quoted>
"5. Paula Brown

Hairdresser Paula Brown went missing after partying with friends one night in Sydney, Australia. Her fiance turned to psychic Philippe Durant for help. Durant used a map and some of Brown's hair to determine her location. In this case, her body was found by chance by a passing truck driver — but it occurred about one mile from where Durant had said."
