Nope. There are plenty of popular commercial bands who do not compromise their music for financial gains. What I am saying is that there is such a diversified spectrum of commercial and popular music these days that if a band continuously can't make the grade, then it is likely they are crap.

Which shows you have little knowledge of how the music industry works. Talent, unfortunately does not equal success, anyone who has had any involvement with the music business will tell you that. You have to actively be trying to sell yourself to 'make it', and that usually includes compromising your sound. Commercial success never fell into anyone's lap, despite the movies you may have seen. An awful lot of hard work is involved, which many aren't willing to put in.

For the ones who are, well they'll be needing a highly astute team of advisers to guide them through the jungle of music industry politics: manager, music lawyer etc. If you have foolishly signed a 5 yr deal with a used car salesman, then forget about it. Then of course they'll need a reputable publisher, distributor, agent etc. Most artists simply don't have access to these resources.

Other acts stay underground because they simply can't be bothered p¡ssing about with all the industry hoo-ha, they prefer to operate on a very small scale.

When have I ever implied this?

When you said artists who stay underground are crap.

So if their music is good, why aren't people buying it up?

They haven't been exposed to it, because it's underground.

hehe at least now I THINK I know what punk is. Some good, some absolute crap but certainly not conventional thank god. :D

Technically Bad Religion did sell out because they left Epitaph and signed with a major label to release The Grey Race LP.

But I agree, awesome band, and one of the forefathers of the modern punk sound.

I think the only reason they left Epitaph was because Brett Guerewitz (founder of Epitaph) was imprisoned for possesion of heavy drugs or something. Process of Belief (2002) was an Epitaph cd so they're back with them and Brett is back too.

Epitaph is the major punk label and was first made because noone would sign Bad Religion so Brett made decided to make his own label.
