Punk Throwdown Showdown - Nominations for best Punk band ever

I don't reckon the Clash have s**t on a lot of the bands I mentioned to be honest.

More critically acclaimed and sold more records, sure, but nowhere near as good as the Dead Kennedys or NOFX imo. Just personal taste I guess.

Pretty big call but its personal taste probably from someone who cant differentiate their arse from their head

I'm going to get flamed for this but early offspring is very very good. The rest of it is solid and underrated, even the albums with the novelty hit songs. Was close to being mentioned for me.

The only thing that bugs me with The Offspring is that radio stations and music channels play the Pretty Fly, Original Prankster, Hit That style singles 90% of the time with Come out and Play and Self Esteem taking up the last 10% (no complaints).

I wish songs such as Kids Aren't Alright, Million Miles Away, Gotta Get Away and All I Want got more airtime as I love those songs.

Probably Im more into what I describe

pre corporate punk rock which died by the mid 80s.

This had a do it yourself emphasis, attitude and the artists were more socially aware

TV Smith, Paul Weller, Joe Strummer, John Lydon, Jello Biafra, Chris Bailey,Rob Younger

Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Adverts, THe Saints, THe Scavangers, Radio Birdman, Johnny Thunders,(and others I missed Apologies) piss all over todays punk!!

Putting Frenzal Rhomb in this group is a serious joke, I dont know how punk artists are signed today, I suppose they go to record company executives drop their strides and show a couple of prince alberts in the middle leg to show that they are "alternative punk".

In the 70s I used to buy the NME for 35c and a rocky Road bar and examine it cover to cover a extremley exciting time! Like David Mc Comb waiting for the NME was a excruticiating time, I think I stopped reading it in 1981 when Adam and the Ants and shittyarse fads appeared, these days I would not wipe my arse with it.

And the kiddies today are showing a total disrepect to punk, I saw the guitarist from the Veronicas wearing a pink and yellow "never Mind The Bollocks Heres The Sex Pistols" T shirt on TV, totally inappropiate to quote Kurt Cobain "knows not what it means", I would have proudly wore a shirt like that in 1977 and probably get punched up, but the irony is this Guitarist from the Veronicas would probably be belted up by a old school punk.

AS for todays current kiddie punk I was at a mates place and the kiddies next door parents were away and they had a party playing Sum 41 and Good CHarlotte over and over again, we had a gutful called the police to go tell them to shut the **** up, sure it wasnt the punk thing to do by us, but it was more of not putting up with mediocry , if they would have been in the yard singing along to "white man in Hammersmith Palais' would have jumped the fence and joined in.

thats enoght for now I leave you with a lyric from the Adverts Bombsite Boy (one of my fave punk songs)

But I don't believe you have to be an idiot.
To get somewhere these days.
I don't believe you have to sell your soul,
And do what everybody says

(pity Lee (punk my arse) Harding has never listening to it)

I agree with the general theme of your post Abercrombie but to be fair to Fenzal Rhomb they did it the old fashioned way. The're not like Killing Heidi despite emerging into the mainstream about the same time.

I remember seeing them many times in the 90s playing in front of less than a dozen people at places like the Tote. They grafted for years.

Just don't like 'em mate.

REckon they might have been a 'you had to be there' type band to really appreciate them. When I was coming up in the world it was NOFX/Pennywise/Bad Religion etc. and I made sure I went back and listened to the older punk stuff and fell in love with the Dead Kennedys, but the Clash never really grabbed me. Just don't like their sound.

DEVO

"I think Devo were the greatest punk rock band that ever lived."
-THURSTON MOORE, SONIC YOUTH

"The genius of that band is just staggering... There are two kinds of people: those who get Devo, and those who don't."
-HENRY ROLLINS

"Of all the bands who came from the underground and made it in the mainstream, Devo were the most challenging and subversive of all."
-KURT COBAIN

I love Frenzal, haha, I'm adding them anyway. They're definitely punk, they're a s**t band no doubt but they wrote a couple of decent songs and were ****ing awesome live.

You insult Frenzal Rhomb yet anti-flag are the kings? The band who released a song called 'corperate rock still sucks' whilst signed to a major label (or major label subsiddery however you spell it, whatever).

I dont think frenzal are a particularly s**t band to be honest, especially in the earlier days. Lex was an excellent bass player and they wrote some very good songs, both musically and lyrically, amongst the more jokey ones. Lost their way a bit but still put on a sensational live show.

I saw Frenzal at least 20+ times in the 90's and early 00's, they supported basically every punk act that came to Australia (it was usually either them or Melbourne stake band, Game Over - and they were ****ing awesome!).

Anyway, always rated Frenzal live, loved this track as well:

Taking the piss out of that douchebag on Ground Zero was always funny too:

Couldn't agree more. They have so many quality songs that just don't get played at all, that I'd love to hear over Original Prankster (imo, one of their worst songs) I'd love to hear Kid's aren't alright, All I want, Spare me the details.

First single I ever remember buying was Pretty Fly, and have loved Offspring ever since.

I believe The Offspring has always been underrated. Most people bag the americana album for the mainstream singles of Pretty Fly WDYGAJ.....but the rest of the album is terrific.

I wouldn't classify The Offspring in the punk movement, though. The Offspring have always been punk/rock/pop in all their albums with the exception of their debut album. Still a quality band.

I had the Pretty Fly single too, also had Americana on cassette

God I'd wish they would hurry up and tour again. Really want to witness Half-Truism and the piano version of Gone Away live. Saw them in 01 and 04 and they we're amazing.

.

bands such as anti-flag and the ataris and NFG sign with major labels as it helps the band reach a wider audience gaining new fans and $$ and in anti-flags case pushing their socialist agenda
