Cars & Transportation Purchase of hail damaged vehicle

Has anyone purchased a hail damaged vehicle that has been classified as a repairable write off, either through auction or private sale?

Also, how easy was it to re-register with VicRoads? I have been given the impression by the seller one just walks into VicRoads and basically gets their papers stamped.

Any other info would be appreciated.
