Push for Australian music to headline the GF

A good idea imv. In an age when Spotify is burying Australian music in its algorithms, and when Australian music is being pushed off the charts, and big American acts charging a fortune, its important we support our own home grown talent.

And it might actually open up new, younger Australian audiences to footy. Much more likely to get converts here than US. Snoop singing a few songs on the other side of the earth, in the middle of the day, for a sport no one has heard of is not going to work.

Also good fodder for AFL v NRL. Australian game, Australian music. Only truly national game should have Australian music.

The point of GF entertainment is to have people watch it who wouldn't usually tune in to the performance or game. I'd probably say the target audience doesn't include anyone who is on this site.

Names like Robbie Williams, Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg do that. Unfortunately we don't really have any Australian's of that realm right now. Snoop featured Jessica Mauboy, Katy Perry featured Tina Arena and Robbie Williams featured Delta Goodrem which is probably the best it will get.

Parkway Drive but yeah, general public won't buy that

Also I know a few people here who listen to all of those artists.

FWIW they have average taste in music

Australian music is terrible.

We need Pitbull.
What we need is an artist that appeals to the most people. Universal music. If Tim Bergling was alive then Avicii would be mint. Bag Raiders would be suitable. Bruno Mars, The Weekend, Ellie Goulding, Sia Macklemore, Calvin Harris.

Those whiny pop artists really only appeal to the youth.

In other words "white people with guitars"... but one Aboriginal artist gets a mention to throw us off the scent.

By Australian music, we certainly don't mean to say we want hip-hop or R&B artists with strong African or Asian roots!

But hey, if you only like the rock and/or roll, that's fine. I would however suggest you don't really understand the genre if you wish to burden it with a hardline immigration policy.

The only genre of music that Australia actually has a good global reputation for producing is metal, which is obviously niche and not going to appeal to the average football bogan or casual audience on GF day.

Generally our music is, how do I put this kindly, complete f*cking sh*t.

I don't really like much of the content on Triple J. I do like Bag Raiders.

Not necessarily. International acts like Katy Perry and KISS that have played at the GF recently wouldn't exactly fit the the black R&B or rap mould.

headline: kpop group (maybe one with an Aussie connection)
support: hilltop hoods/human nature/etc. (big local act of certain vintage)
anthem: post-Eurovision Delta Goodrem

There aren't any really 'big' Aussie bands worth having currently, IMO.

Maybe AC/DC but they're pretty damn old now.

As others have pointed out, the rest of Aussie music is fairly niche these days.

Some lineup that resembles an overnight Triple J presenter's therapy playlist probably wouldn't go down very well with the general footballing public.

The truth is the AFL Grand Final is a celebration of the virile white male (with occasional support from the magical indigenous draftees who know their place).

Problem is we get pre-match entertainment featuring a girl who kissed another girl (and liked it), old guys wearing makeup, and Snoop Dogg...??

Many people can't handle the contradiction. But they can't be honest about why, so they hide their true objections behind the Australian flag.
