He'd do well as a senior assistant, but my post was in reference to him being head coach. Similarly, I wouldn't be against Ross coming here if he was in a similar role.

You reckon we'd hire Ross Lyon in any capacity?

No chance. We don't want people with strong convictions and ability to force change

the last thing this club needs is a self-absorbed Ross Lyon
I actually wouldn’t mind Ross in an assistant/Head of Football role. Strong personality which means he’ll shake things up, he wouldn’t take any of Campo or Hart’s shit

Nope, I’m not.
“I expect that’s occurred because his manager”

Yeah
It is
Nothing like this happened because Crouch said a month before he wanted to stay

Equating that comment to Pyke leaving is, quite clearly , absolute bullshit

Yeh dumbass, clubs talk to players through their managers. Didn’t you know that?

Dumbass ????

Back pedal all you like

Interesting how quick Brouch announced his intention to stay following Pyke's resignation.
I expect that’s occurred because his manager was fielding big offers so he was able to force our hand. Same thing that happened to CC except we didn’t put our hands in pocket for him.
Except it didn’t occur

🤣🤣🤣

I firmly believe that the Crows performance in '16 and '17 was due in large part to Phil Walsh and his death. The club was riding a wave of emotion into the '17 grand final, but it didn't get them over the line. The '17 grand final loss destroyed the playing group.

Pyke lost the players, and wasn't able to bring them back, and desperate to keep some semblance of normalcy he failed to make the big decisions that could have rebuilt the team under his image. The co-captains idea is rubbish, Walker should have stepped down as captain after the '18 season. Underperforming senior players were kept in the side, Walker and Betts etc. The status quo wasn't being challenged until it was too late. There was no development of a plan b and players were not being held accountable for poor performances. And don't mention the camp.

The Crows supporter base can handle supporting a losing side if we can see that the team is in a rebuilding phase, but not the performances produced by the senior player "core" of the team over the last half of the season.

Pyke inherited a strong team, but a strong team needs a strong coach. I'm convinced that he tried as best as he could, but the odds were always stacked against him. Either he didn't have enough control to make the decisions he wanted to make, or didn't have the guts to make the decisions that had to be made.

Whoever our next coach is will need to insist on having enough authority to cut out the rot and, if necessary, rebuild a new team from scratch.

That was the boards idea, not Pyke's. He wanted Sloane solo, told he can't take the C away from Tex until he wants to give it up.

Exactly what I meant. He didn't have enough control to make the decisions he wanted to make, or didn't have the guts to make the decisions that had to be made.

If he didn't have the control he needed to make the team his own he should have walked. He didn't, and now his reputation rests on the results of the '18 and '19 seasons.

So I managed to speak with a couple of players over the weekend. I didn't ask about the review itself (anytime it was hinted at they shut up shop quickly), but had a bit of a discussion about Pyke leaving.
The players thoughts;
  • Was not surprised Pyke left. They felt like 'something had to happen'
  • Thought Pyke was a good guy and very intelligent, however
  • Said Pyke made comments to individuals and groups of players that were not taken well (My belief but not directly said was that this was part of the camp)
  • Pyke admitted mistakes with this and asked for forgiveness, but the cut was so deep with some they could not forget. A bit of a feeling that the forgiveness part wasn't 100% genuine.
  • As a result Pyke had definitely lost the playing group.

My take is that the following happened;
  1. Post grand final feedback was angry and pointed
  2. During the camp there were sessions about being speaking freely etc... and some individual comments were insulting
  3. Individual players and be extension, some groups, were upset at what was said. This was relayed to the club
  4. This festered through start of 2017, eventually came to a head when CM re-appeared at the club.
  5. Pyke eventually admitted it was a mistake, but damage was done
  6. Promises were made about changing the way people were dealt with through 2017
  7. By midyear 2018 it was back to normal and changes and promises were not kept.
  8. Playing group lost faith in Pyke.

Pretty sad really. Makes Burton and co's defence of the camp (which remains today) utterly unbelievable.

Any comments on Burton?

So what you are saying is that there are no lingering issues from the camp?

Interesting but it makes you wonder why fans often still call for a Blight-style hard case to take over the senior coaching role. If negative feedback is a deal breaker for the players, a coach like that wouldn't last two seconds.

How do we let the players know that they need to take responsibility too without making it worse?

I honestly don't know. I guess at the end of the day you need a coach that can criticise players without also demotivating them. Pyke clearly failed in that area.
