QAFL 2016

No it isn't, that finished years ago.

It's topped up by Lions Academy and players from various NEAFL & QAFL clubs when state u18's play.

Magpies barely supplied a player in 2014, this year has been a bit different as stated above by QAFL_fan.

The formal alliance may have ceased, but this year they have been supplying players from Colts and/or reserves nearly every week as far as I can see.

Doesn't really matter whether they are Academy boys or not - the fact is they are 2's players at QAFL level playing NEAFL footy - that's not exactly taking the best of the best...
I think Dog the standard of footy is always a little worse as you get older... :)

Will be a interesting round this weekend !
Morningside vs Magpies, Vultures vs Surfers , even Sandgate vs Uni on the small Uni ground ???
Expect Labrador will defeat Broady and Palmy will beat the Grange ....

Interesting game between Suns and Lions NEAFL side on weekend. Lions topped with plenty of Brisbane Under 23s (not colts), poor Sandgate who can't win a game provided 3 again. Suns appear not to use a non Academy Under 23 player from the Gold Coast. We have 2 different philosophies for 2 areas and clubs like Sandgate are suffering. Suns also consistently use players who aren't eligible if you read the rules of the comp !

Very rough on the Hawks.

Huge opportunity for a win against UQ and 3 of their better young players end up playing in a meaningless NEAFL match while their clubs gets done by a kick.

Went to the Morningside - Magpies game yesterday. Magpies have huge issues down back, literally do not have a key defender - all too undersized.

Felt the game was played on reasonably even terms, Siders definitely transitioned a little better and covered the spread - but the Magpies just refused to pull the trigger going forward and kick to a contest and back their forwards to win it. While the Siders just pumped it in long and quick, and Abey had a field day one out against small opponents. Yes, the Magpies don't have an Abey up front, but you have to give you guys a chance

Aston, Clayton, Dennis and Mason were all on permit from UQ to the Lions on Saturday as well?

Aston has played a number of games for UQ already, the others in the State 18's. All would walk into nearly any QAFL team this year. I would say touche to spooner...
I do know of clubs that don't bother handing over their A graders to the Suns - keep them for the QAFL games so reserves players end up playing for Southport for example.
Is the big issue between protecting your own interests as a club in a viable local competition vs allowing them to play in a comp that will potentially get them noticed to be drafted. Is a tough call bc we always talk club 1st but really, shouldn't we be more about whats best for the player as well? All the Sandgate guys who played at NEAFL level probably have aspirations still

Completely agree.

If you're 19 and get asked to play NEAFL for a an AFL Reserves side, you would be mad not to if you have designs on going further with your footy.

When they come knocking on the door for the likes of Davey, Carseldine, Brittain etc - then obviously clubs would tell them to get stuffed!

It's a good debate. I know a couple of weeks ago broadie had no southport players, we were scratching to fill ressies and colts teams and yet we were providing 3-4 to Suns ressies. Surfers on the other hand had 2-3 neafl players back from southport, all had influence on the game and helped them win. It just didn't seem right

So 7/22 players for lions top ups come from two QAFL clubs that had one win between them approaching the round?

Hardly UQ juniors (allocated to UQ) !! The other interesting matter in this debate is that neither Lions or Suns pay top ups ! At 19 would you rather play NEAFL as a top up in a side that is highly likely to get smashed week in week out, or play for a club in the QAFL that may pay you !There is a salary cap in the NEAFL, obviously the AFL reserves are exempt but their restriction should be that they pay all players.

Hardly UQ juniors (allocated to UQ) .

Are they allocated or do UQ work with them to get them to commit?

No different to morning sides so called production line over the years. They need to go to a senior club at some stage. How many QAFL players actually play juniors at their club?

They are UQ juniors basically Thunder - played at Wests (couple of them did anyway) which is the junior feeder club for UQ, no more or less so than half the guys who play in the QAFL...

You are surely kidding that we should be encouraging kids to chase the almighty $$ at the ripe old age of 18?? Is one of the big problems with the code across Australia and you want to enforce it from an early age? I think nearly all would choose NEAFL club tbh because they cant play for Collingwood in 2017 kicking around for Sandgate...

Few names missing there I would have thought would be in - Croad, Retzlaff, Baxter, Russ, Mueller, Carbone, Quick. Some injured?

Would be good if this was streamed so I could watch from Melb!
Retzlaff, Pantic, Murphy, Russ, Staker all pulled out with injury/niggles I believe last week. Baxter surely pulled out, Carbone stiff but don't know a few names so can't really comment as I've only seen 1 game this year
