QAFL 2021

I don't think its as simple as you suggest with promotion/relegation SMY. As you know both Maroochydore & Noosa stayed in Div 1 for a prolonged period of time when it was very clear they were well above that level. i.e. How many times did those 2 lose to any other Div 1 club other than each other in that period you mention?
However IMO they both made the right choice to plan for sustained success at a higher level.
Just a couple of things to consider. What happens if a team wins Div1 on the back of 2-3 high level recruits in any one year and they aren't staying the following year? Also what happens to the players of an existing QAFL club who lets say because of injury to some key players finishes last in any given year and is then automatically relegated? Do all those players stay loyal and play at a lower level or do they move to another QAFL club and attract 4 points? Then do they head back the following year if their old club wins the lower division without 6-8 of their best players from the previous year (proving there is a significant gap between the competitions) they become 6 points.

Yes you are right, all those factors could come into play but I would argue that in recent times I can't remember a wooden spooner not deserving it.
If a club has a thin list to start with, has a bad run with injuries, struggles to fill all volunteer roles on match days, is copping hidings on a weekly basis or any combination of these, a 22 week regular season can seem like an eternity.

A club on top of the ladder might love the longer season, but I'm not really the right bloke to comment on that.

Yes fair enough too - we like to think of it as a State league but in reality it isn't a patch on the State leagues in many other states in terms of salaries, infrastructure, personnel off field, mindset from players (2x/wk training at most clubs), standard of competition. It is really the same line as a very good metro or country comp in Vic/SA/WA. Have got no idea regarding TFL. I think 18 games is a good number and like the idea of everyone playing each other 2x - but if you don't then the finals need to be opened up to be a top 6, maybe a top 8 even because you are going to miss playing 4 teams 2x.

Thats pretty much what did happen. 18 rounds, 11 teams. Clubs acknowledged that draw is uneven, so make it a top 6, so more than 50% play finals.

Good example being Palmy who had a horror draw, not getting the bottom 2 twice. But likely in my opinion would have played finals if the season played out despite that inequity, but ended up getting shafted by AFLQ

Once they stopped footy at 13/14 rounds, the obvious solution was play a Top 8 given an already lobsided draw was completely decimated, however nobody will ever know why that didn't happen because according to several clubs (not just 7th and 8th) who supported it, no feedback or justification for this not happening was ever provided.

If you stopped the AFL season at say Round 16 (equivalent % of games missed to QAFL) then the ladder looks completely different to what it will look like this Monday, same goes for most competitions.

At round 16 of the AFL ladder compared to right now,West Coast are now 9th instead of 8th and the Bombers moved into the 8. The other 7 teams are all the same. Order is slightly different with the Dogs dropping to 5th and the Cats moving to 2nd. Otherwise top 4 is the same. Not much difference at all really.

so a different top 4 and a different top 8, but the same?

Edit: actually bothered to look

Lions were 3rd, West Coast were 7th, Geelong were 5th, Essendon were 12th, Dogs were 1st etc

In fact, the only teams in the same position Round 16 to now are Collingwood and North.

The order is slightly different but hardly a huge change to the 8 teams playing finals. The order slightly different but 3 of the top 4 get a second chance still, and only one club dropped out of the 8 and was replaced. Hardly drastic..

16 spots out of 18 different, but keep splitting hairs

Youre still bottom of my ladder for good blokes

I've been told Nathan Ablett has been running around in Broadbeach 2's?? Is that true Stuyd?

You would imagine with so much time off the only upside is that every club will roll out a full strength side.

qualifying process is something silly like 2 games, and with VFL done - and 4 games where you could put whoever you like on a teamsheet - its going to be a free for all.

MOrningside Hornets B2B !

If blokes played 4 or 5 games at QAFL from VFL I think that’s a fair result to allow them to play finals I would think.

Smy, no thats incorrect ,,,he hasnt played any footy with us this season,,,,,but word going around he wants to play next season , Dont know if this is true , just another one for the rumour mill.

In reference to VFL players being in a qafl finals side I believe they would of had to played 5 games during the season with the specific QAFL side they are affilated to . So I do not see a mass numbers from the AFLteam lists being elegible to play for a QAFL team in finals.

Ok - good! :) Thought it might have got a run here if true. The 2's coach at Maroochy will be relieved... :)

The footy club has put him on the team sheet for the last 4 games to qualify him.... would be incredibly poor form if he played imo. Like you said hasn't kicked a footy for the Cats this year

Smy ,, the twos coach doesnt have to be relieved even if Ablett was playing ,,, I mean he hasnt played for some 3 years at least , if not more and the season he played with us was a bit of a non performance so to speak

If clubs have thrown names onto team lists over the past month then there might be more than you think..

Smy . im not sure of that ,, wow if its the case I think its a poor decision by the Cats in reference to the current players on team list ..

Yeah I know he hasnt exactly been a super player in recent years - but why go to the trouble of putting his name down? Short on players??
