SC Coast teams got some serious reality checks in terms of what Div 1 actually is compared to when it was Sunny Coast juniors. That’s the issue.

Anyone thinking there’s no problem on the coast is blind. Ten years ago you had vibrant Divisions. Now Kawana and Roos dominate.

Not true at all. Before all this rubbish about going to Brisbane to play there was a Noosa/Coolum beach GF in the 16s.
Kawana is a club that was born out of a primary school then moved to a high school. They have proven that having good people in the right positions is a recipe for success. Great numbers at a great facility now but played on a single oval with same numbers not that long ago.

The comp is fine if they’d let teams play on the coast. Never been an issue. Kids drafted consistently, different clubs winning premierships, not travelling near 300km to play a game of U12s footy. Just madness.

Travel from SC to Brisbane & back on a Sunday afternoon is a treat compared to the opposite.. 12:00 Noosa game at Weyba Rd then the 2.5hr Bruce Hwy trip home 🙄
The Sunny Coast 16s top comp this year would have had Maroochydore, Kawana, Noosa, Caloundra, Coolum, Glasshouse & Hinterland with Maroochydore 10+ goals better than Kawana and 20+ better than the others. Maroochydore won the Div 1 North comp in a canter, great side.
Sides like Noosa possibly had to nominate a Div 1 side as a means of retaining their most talented 16s. I don't mind the idea of travel for 16s and up, not so much under that. Disappointed I didn't get to see Maroochydore vs Aspley, SC big club and Brisbane big club

Not if the Maroochy team was split into 2 teams and combined with the Div 2 side - then you have 44 players playing Div 1 footy. That's the model that should be subscribed to.

Maroochydore 'split' their U14 Conference sides in 2020 and from my understanding it wasn't a popular move with the parents. I understand the reasoning however it doesn't always have the support of those who would choose wins over development.

They split their 16s too.

Or go the other way as Noosa did trying to keep up and create a second team that was horrible. Bet none of those kids play again. But all is good with SC footy ;-)

Yes definitely regret that decision Freddy but amazingly both 16 numbers and colts numbers look great for 2022.I reckon our 16s (although being flogged in the brisbane comp this year) should continue in that comp as a preview of what’s expected to come when playing qafl colts footy.Right now for us at Noosa a strong junior development program is paramount going forward!

Ok I’ll buy in here. My son was like Thommo 42 who played 14.5 this year. Started in the Northern Confence and beat Maroochydore by 60odd in the first game, beat Kawana by 100 (without our key state ruckman) and had to give Noosa 4 kids to make up so they could have 20 players in the next game. We won by 100 odd again. Then all of a sudden we are in the South comp. I know this idea won’t be to popular but I have two solutions.

1. Have a QAFL 16’s comp - I know people will shoot me down for this but it is a thought.

2. Have a comp for DIV 1 only that goes from Noosa to Coolongata that is decided after grading. Imagine the standard. If that means it is a 10 team comp and Maroochydore has 2 teams, Morningside has 3 and Broadbeach has five so be it. Again I know this is not going to be popular. I would argue that this could be applied in 14’s and 16’s. They do this is lots of sports already.

Can’t ask parents to drive from Sunny coast to GC for a footy game on a Sunday. Crazy stuff. It’s hard enough for colts but at least be then most are driving and old to carpool with their mates

I reckon the travel shouldn't start until u16s personally, but the concentration of talent even at u14 level now is getting silly, so a Brisbane u14 Div 1 comp might only have 3 or 4 teams as the rest would get belted. The main problem is talented kids from smaller clubs moving earlier than they need to.

Don't get me wrong, we are beneficiaries of that. Our u14 div 1 team this year was probably made up of 70% of kids that didn't play u10 at Sherwood, they moved from Kenmore, wests etc and some even come down from Toowoomba and in from Ipswich. We don't turn them away, as they will just lob up at the next QAFL Clun and you lose them for good, but I personally think they are moving too early.

However, I have asked some of the parents of these kids why they moved and the answer has never been about QAFL or Div 1 etc it's usually that they recognise the quality of coaching, investment in youth footy and the standards of behaviour they encounter during their junior period and they just want their kid in that environment.

I think Kenmore and Wests (as examples) have good coaches all the people i encounter there are good people and the behaviour standards are as good as any - so I don't buy these reasons, and in reality its just about being Div 1, which ironically we wouldn't even be Div 1 if these kids weren't moving to our club!

Edit: we have boys in both u16 and u14 that travel from Toowoomba each week, on Sundays they drive right past Brisbane and have to go to sunny or gold Coast. Stuff that! (Good on them and their parents for doing it though)

We don’t have many ‘coming in from other clubs’ at Aspley. This year our only player who didn’t come in from under 10’s into our 14.5 moved up from Victoria and lives in the area. I think our 16’s had a couple of new guys from Narangba……..I don’t disagree about the starting age for cross conference should be 16’s

That's where leadership comes in - do whats right, not whats popular. The club split their teams for a number of years with great success (success = multiple kids playing in Div 1, transfer thru to senior footy, getting drafted).

Think the less necessity to drive the better - is where soccer goes horribly wrong and has massive drop off after 12/14's. Kids want to play with mates, parents don't want to be asked to commit a whole day for a game of club footy imo.

Agree Thommo - once the AFLQ created the conditions of separation with a Div 1 gold standard then parents / players aspiring at age 11-15 start thinking this is where I MUST play to get ahead. Hence clubs in these divisions get inundated with kids from other clubs. Take away the stigma of "just playing local". I have absolutely no idea why this all came about a couple of years ago (Freddy might coming from a smaller club) but the standard of footy is irrelevant - its only relevant to talent people who really should just liaise with coaches rather than pick and choose from own eye.

To be honest you probably don’t need to get any from other clubs . You have 3 under 14 teams . 600 plus juniors . And you operate out of 2 different complex’s and your zone covers about 10 suburbs…

I disagree. You sign onto a club and aim to make the first team at your club. The other clubs have to lift their game

Disagree. Aspley is a well run club.

So spot on!
