QAFL 2025 - Tradition V Trivia

Work this year has made it tough to stay up-to-date with these posts (retirement is not that far off, I guess) – but here are a couple of recent items to share:

Last week’s game between Palm Beach and Noosa was the first “one-point” result for the season.
So far this year, there have been 13 games decided by one goal or less (I’m definitely not including abandoned games in that tally).
Also there have been 12 games decided by 100 points or more this year.
Hopefully for the final round, there will be more of the former and less of the latter tomorrow.

Round 17
Broadbeach 13-9-87 d Palm Beach 12-12-84

The interesting aspect of this result (for me) is that this scoreline has occurred five times in QAFL comps.
Oddly enough, Broadbeach has been involved in four of those five games.
But incredibly, the Cats have won every time.
2019 EF: Broadbeach13-9-87 d Mt Gravatt 13-6-84 (Subaru Oval)
2022 R13: Broadbeach 12-15-87 d Labrador 13-6-84 (Subaru Oval)
2022 R15: Broadbeach 13-9-87 d Redland-Vic Point 12-12-84 (Subaru Oval)
2024 R12: Sherwood 13-9-87 d Labrador 13-6-84 (Powenyenna Oval)
2025 R17: Broadbeach 13-9-87 d Palm Beach 12-12-84 (Salk Oval)

Don't ever get into a "87-84" game with Broadbeach!

For anyone interested:

Round 20

Broadbeach V Labrador

Played 64: Broadbeach 40 - Labrador 24 (1997-2025)
Scoreboard: Broadbeach 799 – 741 – 5523 V Labrador 680 – 670 – 4750
I almost thought this was the first time the two clubs have met this season, after the Round 1 problems. However, I forgot this game was rescheduled and played on 5 July. These clubs have established quite a significant history in the QAFL now.
Of course, their history in the GCAFL predates the QAFL by several decades.

Mt Gravatt V Aspley
Played 15: Mt Gravatt 6 – Aspley 9 (2009-2013, 2022-2025)
Scoreboard: Mt Gravatt 185 – 158 – 1268 V Aspley 252 – 205 - 1717
The last time there was a margin of under ten goals was in 2012 (Mt Gravatt won by 12 points).
There is a significant SQAFA record between the two clubs also:
SQAFA: Played 60: Mt Gravatt 39 – Aspley 21 (1975-1993)

Noosa V Coorparoo
Played 1: Noosa 1 – Coorparoo 0 (2025)
Scoreboard: Noosa 20 – 16 – 136 V Coorparoo 8 – 7 - 55
Not being belligerent here – but there is not a lot to talk about as the clubs have only clashed once at QAFL level.
Noosa has a good record against both versions of Coorparoo in other divisions:
BAFL: Noosa 4 – Coorparoo Roos 1 (1994-1995)
QFA: Noosa 7 – Coorparoo Kings 0 (2017-2020)

Palm Beach Currumbin V Redland – Victoria Point
Played 9: Palm Beach 2 – Redland VP 7 (2021-2025)
Scoreboard: Palm Beach 92 – 77 – 629 V Redland 126 – 99 - 855
The two longest names in the comp.
If the Lions win this game, what would be the chance it is by 15 points? Palm Beach’s two wins over the Sharks so far have both been by 15 points.

Morningside V Sherwood
Played 46: Morningside 39 - Sherwood 7 (1983-1987, 2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2025)
Scoreboard: Morningside 804 – 636 – 5460 V Sherwood 456 – 455 - 3191
Only four games have been decided by a margin of two goals or less.

Surfers Paradise V Maroochydore
Played 13: Surfers Paradise 7 – Draw 1 - Maroochydore 5 (2011-2013, 2020-2024)
Scoreboard: Surfers Paradise 153 – 147 – 1065 V Maroochydore 138 – 117 - 945
This game in the final fixture round (checking my notes to be certain) is the first time the two clubs have met this season.
There is an earlier history to include also, from the AFLQ Division 2 competition:
Surfers Paradise 3 – Maroochy/North Shore 6 (2005-2010)

If anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am happy to correct any records I have saved.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:

Apparently, there are some finals happening tomorrow - so there might be time to provide a quick "match-up" record for some of the games.
So, love 'em or loathe 'em, here they are:

Palm Beach V Surfers Paradise
Played 31: PBC 23 - SP 8 (2011-2025)
Their record goes further back to the AFLSQ (2000) and the Gold Coast League before that.

Redland - Vic Point V Morningside
Played 40: RVP 12 - M 28 (2000-2013, 2021-2025)
They never met until the Sharks' ascension to the QAFL ranks. The Round 1 game this season was abandoned.

Mayne V Springwood
Played 34: M 15 - S 19 (2005-2013, 2017-2025)
If you had asked me who I thought had the better record, historical bias would make me assume the Tigers. But don't worry about the Pumas - they clearly know how to conquer Mayne.
Mind you, the record this season is "4-0" in Mayne's favour. On that basis alone, the Tigers deserve to be favourites.

Redcliffe V Kenmore
Played 11: R 5 - K 6 (2013, 2021-2025)
They haven't met much - but its a close record at least. An oddity of the fixtures this year: they have only met once.
I found that the two clubs played against each other in earlier years - but I do not necessarily have results for those seasons:
  • 2000 - Kenmore Firsts V Redcliffe Thirds
  • 1999 - both in BAFL Div 2 (given ladder positions, Redcliffe probably won both encounters)
  • 1997 - both in BAFL Div 3 - AND played in the Grand Final, Kenmore successful by 5 points
Perhaps 1997 was Kenmore's first season in open-grade competition? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on that.

Always happy to receive new or corrected info.
Enjoy! 🏆

Some Grand Final Notes leading into tomorrow:

Redland - Victoria Point V Surfers Paradise
Played 10 : Redland 8 - Surfers Paradise 2 (2021-2025)

The two clubs have only ever played each other (at Senior level) ten times. Already, two of those games have been finals, including their most recent game, the Qualifying Final three weeks ago.
All clashes have been played at either Totally Workwear Park, Vic Point, or Sir Bruce Small Park, Surfers Paradise. Interestingly (for me), every time a game has been played away from Vic Point, the Sharks have won. However, that only represents four occasions.

Their overall scores against each other:
Redland : 146 - 101 - 977
Surfers Paradise : 105 - 95 - 725

Centuries scored: RVP 3 - SP 1
Scores Under 50: RVP 1 - SP 2
100+ Point Wins: RVP 1 - SP 0
Wins 12 Points or Less: RVP 2 - SP 0

In fact, there has been so few games, here are the margins of all clashes in reverse chronological order:
9 40 5 16 36 16 20 138 14 58
The bold values are the Demons' victories.

And just for the fun of it, let's look at each Club's overall record:

Redland-Vic Point P 401 : W 206 - D 3 - L 187 - NR 5 (2000-2015, 2021-2025)
For : 5159 - 4453 - 35407
Agst : 5729 - 4750 - 39124
Surfers Paradise P 265 : W 119 - D 2 - L 139 - NR 5 (2011-2025)
For : 3184 - 2871 - 21975
Agst : 2926 - 2615 - 20171
In the past, I have excluded the "No Result" (NR) games. They're pointless clutter. However, to enhance the interactive experience of these notes, I'll let you decide whether you ignore them or not.
I also accept that the League name changes (AFLQ, SEQAFL, QAFL, etc) and the presence of the NEAFL can create a bit of interference - but the impact on historical records is a discussion I'm happy to have at some other time.

So, who wins? Well, based on the above, who knows!
The Sharks deserve to be the favourites - but then, the Demons have been quite incredible this season.
If I have to make a choice, then personally, I'll go with the ex-SQAFA club.

As always, I definitely encourage people to provide more (or corrected) info they may have.
Enjoy!

Just trying out a couple of different things here:

Redland-Victoria Point 14-11-95 d Surfers Paradise 8-9-57

Across al fixtures, the margin of 38 points has occurred 108 times.

The score of "95 - 57" has occurred twice before:
  • 1961 R11 - Morningside 12-23-95 d Wilston Grange 8-9-57
  • 2002 R3 - Redland 15-5-95 d Labrador 9-3-57

Across the years and the various competition formats, there have been 120 Grand Finals played.
The average margin of these games has been 30.667 points.
Thirty Grand Finals have been decided by a margin of 12 points or less.
The 2025 Grand Final is the third time the season has been decided by a margin of 38 points (2007 & 2021).
Of the 120 GFs, 38 points represents the equal-78th closest result.

2011 was decided by the greatest margin - 98 points (NEAFL - Northern Territory def Morningside).
The closest margin was 1 point - and has occurred twice:
  • 2015 NEAFL - Northern Territory def Aspley (TIO Stadium)
  • 1952 QANFL - Mayne def Western Districts (Exhibition Ground)

Season Comparison

I'm trying to figure out a better way of displaying the following info:
I've set up a report for the Margins Per Year across all games & all seasons (but only where the game was actually played - no Abandoned or Forfeited games included).

Overall, 2025 was a closer season than 2024. Here is the range or margins across both seasons:
1758516074964.png
Across 124 games during 2025, the average margin has been 44.17 points. This compares to 2024 with an average of 52.19 across 114 games.

The "closest season" I could find was 1938 - an average of 20.66 points across 44 games.
The "most disparate season" appears to be 1990 - with an average of 85.39 points across 77 games.
