QAFL 2025

Can’t really compare the men’s and women’s comps but it’s interesting how two teams (Morningside and Moreton Bay) get into QAFLW, one team is at the bottom and the other is beating all the mainstay QAFLW teams with ease and only lost one game. How does that work? Surely Yeronga for the sake of their women’s program goes into Div 1 or QFAW central to rebuild what they lost.

I’m not in the women’s space but definitely seems like different expectations for different clubs.

Morningside picked up a gap in the women's area which was the east / far east of Brisbane and attracted some of the better girls from the Victoria Point region. Yes they have also gone pretty hard at clubs like Sherwood from my understanding too which is frustrating for all concerned but tbf no different to what happens in the mens space among different clubs.
Panthers had some very good girls in their juniors that are now of age. Their addition made a lot of sense in the end (maybe not at the get go) and they stacked their coaching group to be as strong as any club in the QAFLW which is great to see. At least they didn't pay lip service to the promotion.

From what I can see a direct swap between Sherwood and Yeronga would have been a smart move too at the beginning of this season based on 2024 results. Can't believe the magpies weren't successful but MB were. Yes, that region is around the fastest growing in Australia population wise but when you have players being pulled / enticed from the central and northern areas of the sunshine coast to come and play it doesn't seem like there is an absolute need for a QAFLW team in that part of the world just yet.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the make up of the comp in 2026.

Not sure who did the fixture, but Moreton Bay for example got Bond twice in the first 10 rounds and Southport.

Morningside got only 1 of last years top 5 in their opening 8 rounds, didn't play Bond until all their academy girls are back and don't have to play Southport until the final round.

In terms of an introduction to the higher level, its the most extraordinarily favourable fixture you could possibly imagine.

Yeronga who were winless for 2 seasons and blind freddy could see were going to struggle again, then get dished up Southport twice in the opening 8 rounds, including a nice Rd 1 smashing to demoralise an entire playing group out of the gates and copped Bond in Rd 6.

Its almost like AFLQ left Yeronga in the comp, then made their draw as difficult as possible to make the decision to leave them there look even worse than it already was :straining:

No that's very true Miller - good points - but tbf Bond nowhere near what they used to be even with academy girls now and Morningside have a good number themselves that were either academy / state players that missed for a large chunk of the season. With both sides full strength it would be a very good game.

Unlike a few years ago the academy kids (boys and girls) just don't play as much club football as they used to so to rely on these players (more so in women's space where they make a very big difference) is not great value.

I'm not sure if Yeronga's fixture was adjusted it would have been a massive difference to them this year but it is nonsensical to have 200+ score lines in games of 20min qrts where the ball still needs at least 2 kicks to score from the centre bounce. I feel sorry for all who have to participate in these sort of games, both the winners and losers and the coaches. Absolutely nothing is achieved.

Yeah, I was refering to the Morningside team getting much stronger when the academy girls return. Allegedly took half of that unbeaten u17 Sherwood team that would really strengthen them in the latter half of the year.

Not quite right. Morningside got 5 from our u17s and one from our u15s, only 3 of them have played seniors and one did her ACL unfortunately before the season started.

They also took 3 from our women's team, which is 100% fair game and I don't understand why they weren't allowed to take more.

We also lost 1 to Aspley from Seniors, and from the u17s we lost 2 to UQ, 1 to Grange and 2 to Coorparoo - all to play QAFLW. Which is fair enough.

I guess the question is, if one club is supplying 12 QAFLW players in one off-season, they probably should be there to start with 😅

We also lost 5 or 6 from our reserves to Yeronga....

Yeah that's a decent number Thommo - and it is a fair question!

What was in the Morningside and Moreton Bay submission that Sherwood didn’t have?
