Never let it be said that ground crews and maintenance workers lack a sense of humor, Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and problems, known as "squawks," submitted by Quantas pilots and the solution recorded by maintenance workers.

By the way, Quantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident.

P = The problem logged by the pilot.
S = The solution and corrective action.

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

P: Test flight OK, except autoland very rough.
S: Autoland not installed on this aircraft.

P: No. 2 propeller seeping prop fluid.
S: No. 2 propeller seepage normal. Nos. 1, 3 and 4 propellers lack normal seepage.

P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.

P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on backorder.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200-fpm descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.

P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what they're there for!

P: IFF inoperative.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

P: Suspected crack in windscreen.
S: Suspect you're right.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Rain Man.

Bangkok, a couple of years ago, put paid to their safety record.

They're very good Frodo.

I think Qantas claims (whether rightly I don't know) to never have had an in-flight fatality caused by a crash (people would no doubt have died via heart attacks etc).

Also, didn't James Strong (CEO Qantas) spend enormous money (more than the cost of a new aircraft) to rebuild the plane that crashed so as to avoid having an insurance write-off because of accident? That's what I heard anyway.

Yep - I saw the figures somewhere.

It was way cheaper to buy a new plane - they didn't write the plane off due to the loss of face it would have caused. Just goes to show the power of PR sometimes.

True, but they've never had a crash with a fatality.
(If that makes sense).

'Incidents' not unlike Bangkok occur reasonably often for ALL airlines. If possible, they are usually hushed up.

A QANTAS plane in the 60's (?) allegedly very nearly crashed into Botany Bay. The incident was apparently hushed up.

These things apparently happen often around the world for all airlines.... scary huh!

Having said that, I would always fly QANTAS if given the choice.

I'll go strongly opposite to that. In my experience Qantas is the worst airline I have ever travelled, and that includes Sempati air, Garuda and Air India.

HA HA sorry Frodo I didn't intend to reply to your post, but Garuda, did you know that when ever their planes crash, they ban photographers until the painters have been in to paint over their name. No way would I fly Garuda, Sempati is OK though.

Domestically I find Virgin much better than Qantas, no frills fair enough, but at least the stewards are friendly & treat you with respect, where as qantas stewards seem to not give a damn about service any more.

Good call. Qantas staff seem to not give a stuff. Virgin staff seem to actually be enjoying themselves.
