Review QF: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

Really poor night from the coaches.
Selected too many half back flankers so had no way to change the game.
Threw Max into a position he’s played once for half a game.
Let Collingwood do everything they wanted. Took nothing away from them.
Last quarter we need goals so we push everyone into back half, leave two Collingwood players free in our F50 and we wonder why we can’t kick a goal. Insane and stupid. A special combination.

The camera swung onto Nicks with about 4 minutes to go. He sits back with his hand behind his head as if to say

"Well I've done all I can. Not my fault."

I did not expect Pedlar to stand up, but he did. Neal-Bullen did his job, and almost covered the slack for other absent players.

I also think it's weird people are singling out Thilthorpe. His game was poor, but I thought he was at least attempting to fix it. Which is more that can be said for many others.

Lastly. A month ago I said Chris Burgess had a "bad game, but not as bad as many said it was". Similarly paradoxically tonight: Mason Cox played terribly*, but simultaneously Adelaide had no answer for him. The Adelaide defence was torn apart in the third quarter by the opposition strategy of kicking it to a target and having him drop chest marks.

*additional note: I say "terribly" here, but his stats were objectively superior to a third of the Adelaide side.

I thought Laird was the only player that looked like doing anything in the midfield.

Rory ****ing Laird. The guy we kicked out of there because he wasn't good enough.

Disaster

It was the only good move Nicks made. And really he should've gone there earlier. Bit of experience in close helped give us half a chance.

Michalanney stuff was horrible.

Players who shit the bed

Fogarty
Thilthorpe
Soligo
Peatling
Keays
Michalanney
Cumming
Murray
Smith
Hinge

And Nicks
Agree with all. Hinge probably a bit harsh though. Him being subbed off was a product of a selection panel who clearly don’t even understand the 6-6-6 rule or playing to our own strengths.

I’d add Milera (barely got near it or had a meaningful disposal all night) and Berry (12 touches as a full time mid, fumbly, and before anyone tries to argue about his defensive impact, he had 1 tackle).

And I'll add Dawson who on reflection also shit the bed and went missing

Wasn’t given a clear role tonight.

Mind you our system was poor everywhere.

Bottom line is our midfield got another smashing & we just didn’t get enough quality ball into our forward line.

Only Tex & Pedlar looked likely up forward.

Geez, we had some dumb moments, particularly 2 from Filthy.
Yes the incompetent selection of 9 defenders was largely responsible for Michalanney’s pitiful performance, I agree. If only there was any way to have seen that coming. Oh, anyone with a clue did.

Clearance issues have a lot to do with our ruckman, who has been ordinary since Port game - wasn’t fantastic in that either - how was the header to Collingwood advantage that cost a goal…..

Oppo rucks just run over the line engage and he is lost…….our mids barely get first use, then when he does get first hand on it, it is so predictable that oppo mids rove it better than our mob.

Just comprehensively beaten by a better team tonight. Collingwood stood up and nailed opportunities when it matters, their good players all played well, their role players did their role.

We had way too many players who were either off, or tentative, or just essentially non-existent on the field tonight. No need to name them, other posters have done it already. Very few who can walk off with their heads held high - Pedlar, ANB, Walker, Berry chief among them, and even then none of them played a complete game.

It was our first final in eight years, and it showed. Probably no surprise that ANB was one of our best - he understood the moment and rose to the occasion. So did the finals-hardened Collingwood side. The rest of our side played like the finals virgins they were.

The boys have to take their medicine, learn their lessons, and harden the **** up before next week. Their failure, as a team, has now made the road in front of them much more difficult. Time to atone for it and prove that you deserve to be there, or else get the hell out of the way.
