Going back to Laird and Keays in the midfield when it all went wrong is a really worrying sign.

Not because the Laird aspect didn't work (he was good), but because it's a clear sign of Nicks panicking and going back to his old (and bad, unsuccessful, game losing) ways

Good Nicks, winner Nicks, tries Curtin, Taylor, Pedlar in there for a spark. Not Keays, who was getting destroyed all night.
We legit could not get our hands on the ball in the middle. The one thing those 2 guys have shown they could do in the past was find the ball. I’m glad they made the change. Laird was worth it. Keys was not

Feel like we didn't get the draft picks that our poor list warranted. We'll be overrun by the WCE with 5 #1 draft picks.

We got them. We used them on Jones, McHenry, McAsey, Thilthorpe, Pedlar, Rachele, Rankine (traded) and Draper.

I don't see one AA midfielder there (too early on Draper obviously). Dawson is our only AA midfielder.

We were absolutely about to ride a Rory Laird midfield to the premiership.

What the **** are people on?

Those first 3 picks killed us. Really needed one a grade mid out of that lot

Want to add one more thing.

That's the dumbest footy we've played for a long time. Hack kicks. Bombing long. Dumb handballs. All up nobody down. All run at the player with the ball leaving players free to receive a handball...Too many things to mention.
If we play geelong in a prelim, we will do the same.

When it comes to playing Collingwood and Geelong, we continuously play into their hands by kicking it down the throat of their spares. Been happening for a few years now

This season has been a good one which has meant we haven't tried much stuff.

Rolled with the same core group of mids, same structure, mostly same back 7, 3 key forwards.

Haven't altered much. Forced changes only.

Had to go back to Laird + Keays because that's all we have previous data on. Haven't changed it up with a smaller forward line, or subbing out a ruck to see how it goes, or Dawson sweeping across half back

Our only two "impact mids" we've experimented with were Rankine and Rachele - both out. Cupboard was bare untried.

We needed something different tonight
and all we had up the sleeve was Max's one game up forward v Richmond

Easy now of course
Imagine posters on here saying this all year

Reminded me of the melb game. Collingwood too much class and we didnt have rankine to blow the game apart.

That's because Collingwood had two players sitting about 30 metres behind the contest for most of the game.

Moore pretty much ran around for most of the game with no one near him, the coaching panel essentially did nothing about it and just left Moore free to intercept any long kick forward.

Absolute dunce level coaching performance tonight.
I think they thought Quaynor on Thilthorpe was a win for us

But it allowed 2 things to happen . Moore was free and Quaynor then ran off when able to

Taking McAsey instead of Caleb Serong will go down as a massive blunder.

Jones over Butters is another one too.

I don't know the answer unfortunately but we're not going anywhere until we find or develop another A grade mid.

So 100 percent rat shit?

Premierships are won or lost in one game. He let us down.

He let us down in this match. Which is not the same as being a player that overall can't and won't handle finals pressure

Taylor Walker for example kicked 1 goal 3 in his very first final, our awful effort against Sydney in 2012. He played some much better games in finals after that. Would have been exceptionally harsh to stamp his cards and say he couldn't handle finals pressure based off that Sydney match

Am I being overly naive in thinking footy's not that hard of a game?

"If you hack kick it 30m to the flank, you are getting dragged and I am putting my foot inside your arseh*le. Kick it near the boundary, kick it inboard, or kick it 20m forward so it turns into a ground ball."

I mean, looking where you're going to kick it would probably work too, but baby steps. It was getting to the point where the crowd was groaning as the ball left the boot because we could already see the only person near it was Moore.

We don't get a second chance.

Hes our most important player, and contributed massively to our losing a premiership.

Walker, by the way, has never won one.

Clearly we don’t rate the position.

Years of drafting and selections prove this. Years.

Which is batshit crazy of course

In fairness to Nicks, he did try a pretty bold move in tactically subbing out a left footed half back who has a long kick but wastes it with dickbrain decisions and subbing in a right footed half back who has a long kick but wastes it with dickbrain decisions.

We literally do get a second chance, because we haven't been eliminated yet

And people still blame the AFL for giving GC a PP gifting them Anderson .

The biggest problem with our supporters base is that rather than accept our own failings we continually try and blame "the system".

As you correctly pointed out, missing out on Serong was our fault.
