QFA Div 4&5

Ferny Grove had a run against Northern NSW team Casino’s seconds team on the weekend. Some what of a scrappy affair, but FG finished strong and put some good play together.

Have another game against Mayne’s 3rd grade team this Friday night. Should present a pretty big challenge, but good to put things into a real game setting. Especially with some of the limited opportunities in the last few weeks.

Definitely in a much stronger position vs this time last year.

Do I read that as the best team in one of those divisions will end up with nothing?

That is ridiculous.

I'd thought they would get their own trophy/medals etc. and have a bit of a playoff the next week

Maybe the north v south winner's game would work better as part of the next preseason.

Something like the community shield in the UK where a trophy is up for grabs but it's also a preseason hitout. Something to not take away from winning the previous season

Maybe they were thinking how would promotion/relegation with Div 3 work if we don't have 1 winner in September...hmm indeed. Surely could be made work with only 8 teams in Div 3 as it is

Not sure I understand any logic with it. Div3 has 8 teams. Their GF winner keeps their cup. A 9 team comp in the divisions below cannot.

But how do you sort out who goes up and down if there isn't 1 winner at the end of the season?

Do you promote 2 teams to div 3?

Have to send 2 down?

Have to pick the worst north and worst south team to send down even if they aren't the 2 bottom sides?

And why doesn't the same logic apply to Div 1/2 north and south?

Just trying to see their point of view, albeit struggling to. Maybe they just didn't want to spring for an extra grand final and everything that comes with it. Surely can be paid out of the 7 new licences

Surely you just promote the Div 3 north and South winners and relegate bottom 2 of Div 3, or relegate the bottom and just make Div 3 have 9 teams the following year?

this is all time dumb decision, I'm sure if every Div 4 club sent in their thoughts they would realise this. They have had Div 1 North and South in the past, then more recently Div 2 north and south. Never done it this way in those competitions.

it really is absolutely mind numbingly dumb to do it this way and shows a complete lack of understanding of footy.

Superb bowl north vs South (or similar) never works.

You play in a competition all season, competing with the other clubs, jostling for ladder positions, getting to finals and then finally winning the big dance - you no doubt celebrate like you should and then you're expected to suit up the following week against a team you haven't seen all year in a game where you really can't win anything, but you can take the gloss off the premiership you won only 7 days ago?

Never been particularly appealing to me and I've never really seen it work.

I think back when Div 1 was north/south and Mayne won North twice and Springwood did the same in the South, there was talk of a north/south shootout at the beginning of each season, but quite understandably there was no interest at all post GF win

Only have to read the previous page to see that this was discussed and a pretty good explanation on why it doesn't work was supplied. AFLQ satff should be forced to read big footy. Sure, alot of crap (from me included) - but also some smart cookies with good ideas posting on here.

It's not like they don't read Bigfooty 😉

Might have been easier to see the bigger picture when it was the same person running literally every competition.

Sure that's how you burn people out and lose them to the organisation but that's the next person's problem, right?

I made this point when we met at the end of last year to promote both north and south Div 4 winners and relegate the bottom 2 from Div 3. They were concerned that could potentially create an imbalance of north and south in those competitions but promote 2 and relegate 1 shouldn’t create too many headaches.

my post was poo pooing the idea of a post premiership super bowl. It never actually crossed my mind that there would be only 1 premier across 2 competitions :tearsofjoy:

Something a little off track. For those who know Park Ridge and Jindalee are kicking the Div 2 North season off next Saturday 26th March.

The Pirates have former Collingwood Champion Dane Swan having a run for the Pirates.

We have an opening for any clubs that want to be part of the day to have a practice game from 10am- Midday if anyone is interested.

PM if any clubs interested.

Ferny Grove had its second preseason hit out last night taking on The Mayne Tigers 3rd division team.

Mayne won the game by probably 6 goals, but overall it was a very competitive game with both teams playing very good football.

From an FG perspective, the run and carry, tackling pressure, ball use and goal kicking accuracy was a real positive sign for the team. They are in a much better position than has been the case over the past two years and should have more on field success as well.

Any other teams had hit outs and can share?
