Expansion QLD and NSW academies

What do you want instead of academies to support growth of the game in NSW and Qld and an increase in the AFL talent pool?

All anybody in Vic/SA/WA wants is for academy players to go into the draft. Which the Northern clubs don't want because "we develop them" and "we pay for the development". And around in circles that goes. Ignoring the amount of money spent in Qld/NSW that was generated in Vic/SA/WA who do you think develops juniors in footy states? Where does the funding come from?

The truth is most Victorians don't care about supporting the game in NSW and QLD.

Correct. Why would they?

I'm not from Victoria but when I started watching footy it was basically the VFL with West Coast, Brisbane and Adelaide having recently joined. Then Freo and Port within a few years and Gold Coast and GWS about 15 years after that. The AFL came up with Gold Coast and GWS, the footy states didn't ask for that. The AFL wanted two teams in Qld and NSW because it means an extra game each week and one game being played in each market each week. And it puts teams in NRL heartland. Meanwhile the NRL don't have teams in WA or SA, are planning a team for PNG and have one team in Melbourne. They aren't attempting to force teams into markets that can't support them.

The local talent pool wasn't enough to sustain the Lions and Swans, so doubling the number of teams in their markets doesn't exactly help that. So the AFL's solution is to fund (yes fund) a different development model in NSW/Qld and provide draft concessions to the clubs running the academies. So as a fan of a club that plays in a competition with s draft and salary cap, why exactly should I care about "growing the game"?

It's a 100% what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine setup currently.

We do but not at the expense of giftwrapping Premierships to grow it. Victorians want real genuine supporters who care about the game in NSW and QLD regardless of whether those interstate clubs win flags or not. We have zero interest in bandwagoner fair weather glory hunting theatre goers who only turn up when these clubs are doing well because the AFL head honchos are practically handing them success on a silver platter.

Going through a bit of pain and earning that success goes a long way into solidifying that support otherwise like I said by basically handing these clubs flags (or in the Swans case just making granny's) it is just casual theatre goers who will be mostly attracted to these clubs and that's a not a reliable foundation to build support from.

World kept turning. Sun kept rising and setting. Birds kept chirping.

Don't get me wrong I like watching good players wherever they play but if the next Stephen Coniglio is going to NSW because 'equalisation' and 'national competition' and the next Isaac Heeney is staying in NSW because 'growing the game' then yeah I am OK to go back to how things were.

Which is a shame because as a sports fan I want to see kids given the opportunity to play their chosen sports and make it to the highest level if they are good enough.

One of the reasons for the academies is locking in local talent. Sydney have lost a few Academy players to the NRL who are able to sign players and guarantee they can stay in their local area. Without the Academy Sydney can't promise these young players the ability to stay home, and as a result they will sign with a NRL club who can.

Rubbish, the typical thugby player is usually no taller than 6 foot and built like a shitbrick house with a laughable aerobic capacity (repetitive stop start nonsense have to go back to go forward that demands little running or elite fitness); whilst elite endurance/stamina is required to play footy at the highest level.

Look like how Karmichael Hunt fared and he was arguably one of the best athletic specimen in the NRL. In other words there's very little overlap in the type players that fit the mould required for elite professional footy that is best suited to the thugbies.

That's one of main factors that attracts parents to footy that are not from a Pacific Island background, their son doesn't have to have the build of a security stooge to make it at the highest level in footy.

I'd rather have a fair competition. If Isaac Heeny doesn't want to make millions of dollars playing AFL then good on him? No great loss.

Just a brownlow favourite for most of last year who turned a final (mostly) off his own boot last season while also taking the best mark probably of the last decade?

No great loss 😂

So many "footy fans" on here really hate watching good footy ey.

I like watching Geelong first and foremost, everything else is a distant second.

‘Going through a bit of pain’ he says, forgets Lions were shot for 20 years.

No shit it wouldn't be anything to do with us. That's why the best league for developing the countries best players has no links to AFL clubs. So there's no advantage to any team. Get it?

"smart enough to follow", sounds like plastic fan wank talk.

I've seen more flag wins than you have which is the funniest part of your attempted flex. So you're not that clever after all.
Yes nothing screams plastic like being a Fitzroy member standing on the wing in the rain watching them get smashed every week. 🙄 yeah sorry forgot you used to win them when there was 10 teams and you used to cheat. Pretty happy with my choice.

All clubs contribute to the TV rights deal which is the major revenue source for the league.

Or is your argument effectively that Vic/SA/WA have historical structural advantages in relation to talent production in traditional AFL heartslands and that we should just be thankful and spend our resources to build talent for the league while Vic/SA/WA reap the benefits of checks notes having existed for longer in AFL heartland regions while not having to expend the same resources.

Do you really think all grassroots clubs which develop juniors are AFL funded either substantially or in entirety? Surely you don't.

Some more than others. My club has a large supporter base and is commercially strong but I am under no illusion that we are pivotal to the the TV rights deal. The bulk of viewership is in Victoria.

Historical structural advantages.

What you mean to say is more people in Vic/SA/WA play and watch footy than they do in Qld and NSW/ACT. Which is why having two clubs in Adelaide and Perth was a no brainer. WA has one A-League team, NSW has 5. WA has zero NRL teams, NSW has 10. Super Rugby is provincial with one team in Qld, NSW, ACT and WA but the majority of players come from Brisbane and Sydney.

Grassroots development in WA is funded by WA Football. Where do you think they get their money?

Get players from NSW and QLD to nominate for the draft so all clubs can access them.

Ok but those players don’t exist in the numbers they currently do except for academies and certainly the growth and number of players will dip and plateau.

So what alternative do you want?
