Expansion QLD and NSW academies

Yeh I’d love to know.
Play in a non traditional AFL state is the only logical answer, but basically that means For the good of growing AFL, NSW and QLD teams will be given large draft advantages that no other club has

So basically:

  • Vic clubs get less travel+home grand final
  • NSW/QLD clubs get acadamies
  • SA and WA clubs get ??????

Get disadvantaged

What disadvantages does Brisbane have over the WA and SA clubs?
Hmm, lets see. We're not an AFL state, so we can only truly attract players who prefer to be out of the media spotlight There's a lot more WA and SA top end players in the comp, meaning we're more likely to experience players wanting to leave. Players in QLD and NSW would also receive far less in terms of external sponsorships, and i could go on. Anyone who believes QLD and NSW teams are on the same level as SA or WA teams are straight up delusional tbh. The only reason the Swans are able to escape it is because they're one of the best run clubs in the league, and Brisbane have only gotten out of that whole recently because our club is probably up there as well. But that only accounts to retaining players, because the moment Brisbane drop off again, we will struggle like we did in the past. When SA and WA teams bottom out, they don't experience nearly as much hardship as we do. Simple. as. that.

SA and WA clubs gets large cultural support and media presence that leads to large sponsorship, corporate box support, large membership support and lucrative post football careers for players (bet Ben Keays will stay in SA for this rather than return home in QLD). So the financial base for the WA/SA clubs is far larger and much more stable in down years. In QLD both teams are flying this year and yet we can't even get into the Courier Mail much (behind four NRL clubs), the local version of SEN gets a few stories a week on AFL, not wall to wall AFL like in SA and WA.

NRL: Kayln Ponga (lions) and Tom Trbojevic (swans) two examples for you that played in the academies until 17th year. Both went on to play for NRL QLD/NSW in SOO and Australia.

Neither of those examples are relevant as they were both playing rugby before the academies tried to pull them into AFL. They simply decided to stay with the other sport.

No different to players who are guns at cricket and footy whereby they choose the cricket path instead.

These aren’t players who have turned their back on footy because they were going to get drafted interstate. They just chose the sport they were more passionate about.

Isn't Lachie Neale from SA and chose to join Brisbane when they were poor? Didn't Lance Franklin choose to go to the Swans when he's from WA?

Wonderful, so goal accomplished. Remove academies now then.

Sure, if you agree the highest side hosts the GF for one, you want to remove the academies whilst keeping F/S and having a home GF

He left Fremantle, who was just as poor that season. Lance also doesn't like the spotlight, that's why he went to Sydney.
But he still went to Brisbane....and Franklin still went to Sydney....you just complained in previous post players don't choose QLD/NSW teams because of the spotlight yet these 2 players did.......

That's not what i said. I said players are more likely to leave northern state clubs. Which is true. Should I name the go home five? Or how Gold Coast lost basically all of their starting draft players?

Could remove priority access to academy players and father sons, but bring in live trading of players during the draft. Team selects Will Ashcroft, Brisbane have to pay up big to get him over. Team runs the risk of him demanding a trade to Brisbane the next off season if they don't deal. Just an example.

When Brisbane were in the same situation as WC are now and languishing near the bottom, we were essentially left little choice but to take kids from interstate, some of whom decided to leave for various reasons (including Yeo to WC).

We didn't have the luxury of taking 3 first round talents from Queensland to help mitigate the 'go home' risk. Leaving out the father/sons who we would have access to without the academies, the Brisbane academy has produced one top 20 pick so far.

Final trade for Yeo was derisory nonsense too, pick 28. He'd played 19 games in his second year and had well outperformed his draft stock. West coast offered pick 28 because we knew they'd have to take it.

The fact that West Coast can't just big club themselves out of a rebuild this time seems to be breaking some brains. I have much more sympathy for the north fans who have issues with the acaedmies.

So, what you're saying is the Northern clubs have had more success in trading interstate players into their teams than WCE and Freo have?

And they have their own academies they can just freely pick first rounders from?

Gotcha :thumbsu:

I’m sure that hungry jacks Josh Kennedy sponsorship is something that could happen up here as well.

Not sure how that's even remotely relevant to what I said.
It's relevant to what i said. There's less financial incentives in Queensland and NSW clubs because we face more difficulties getting sponsorships. Want me to go another round? Your club has been poorly run for years, yet it's still a financial powerhouse. If the same happened to Brisbane, it wouldn't be the same. WA and SA teams have a significant financial advantage over northern clubs, and unlike you guys, we can't lure players with external sponsors.

Cool.

How's that relevant to our proven ability to attract players from interstate, compared to the Northern clubs?

Which players have WC and Freo recruited from another team that have won a brownlow or Coleman medal? Wc and Freo recruut mediocre players generally who majority are from WA originally. The guns don't usually come back

Northern academies is fine it’s the rort that was the bid matching that annoyed me. See how it goes this year with the change in values to DVI and lessened discount. I’d be fine with it if clubs actually had to make calls on players tied to there club appropriately

I was wondering this today.. Wonder how many players we see overlooked because the owning club isn't getting a bargain with the old 20% discount attached?

Will be curious to see if someone like Dylan Patterson is ranked around 18 - 25 goes inside 10 and GCS choose to not match because its too high (just an example)

Or swans if they cop a barrage of bids from 10-25

Yep I think it will be good we'll be seeing clubs let their kids go elsewhere if they have a dearth of quality already in that position. I was actually thinking that with addinsal from gc and the Brisbane mid this year I forget his name. Both those guys are too similar to their current young mids. Patterson on the other hand you'd take just about anywhere he has the best side step and speed around and is in fact another example of why the academies work, he was in the gc titans academy and chose the suns instead.

I predict this year there will be significant overflow from Suns academy after they match bids in first round on Patterson, Uwland, Addinsall :) I suspect another 3-5 players could be drafted by other teams.

Patterson is my pick. Great skills, fast.
