Writer of that article clearly loves Brad Ebert cos none of those are even close.

7 marks off 10 isn't really close (ebert)

Shit I didn't really pick up how far Ebert was off when i posted as I was mainly thinking of Rockliff, but yeah he shouldn't be in that summary. But Rockliff twice, Hunter and Gibbs were close.

From memory Hannebery and Gibbs had the first 3 doubles pretty early and needed the other category for the majority of the last quarter.

Rocky is bound to do it again and I'd be surprised if Mitchell didn't as well.

This article by The Mongrel Punt says 6 have done it in the AFL and only 4 in the NBA and the first in AFL/VFL footy didn't happen until 2009.

Only four players have been able to pull off a Quadruple Double in NBA history. Nate Thurmond, Alvin Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson are the only men ever to climb this mountain, and each has only done it once. Thurmond was the first to achieve this in 1974, and Robinson was the last man to pull it off, twenty years later. No one has completed it since 1994.

In the AFL, the quadruple double is almost as elusive as it is in the NBA. As it currently stands, only six players have been able to compile enough numbers across the range of four specific categories to qualify as Quadruple Double players.

The first to pull it off was Scott Thompson for Adelaide in 2009.......

Joel Selwood in 2009, Brent Stanton in 2011, Ben McGlynn Rd 5 2014, Tom Rockliff Rd 20 2014 and Joel Corey late in his career in 2015. There are graphics and info at the link above.

There were a lot near quadruple doubles in 2017. This graphic shows why a lot of Port supporters are very happy with the club recruiting Rockliff.

Don't think it is really comparable to the NBA version. That has been extremely difficult to achieve over multiple eras. In the AFL, it never happened at all until the game has changed to a lot more contested, stoppage based style. This allows contested beast midfielders far more opportunity to tackle, which previously would have been what made it impossible. Combined with more emphasis on ball control (more uncontested marks) and higher general possession counts, the QD has now become a somewhat regular event in this era (relative to NBA) , although still a very impressive achievement.

Agree - it's almost like they're different games and a bit silly to compare in that article! :D

For example only one NBA player has scored 100 points, whereas at least three VFL/AFL players have, and the second highest NBA score (81) wouldn't even make the VFL/AFL's top 10.

Rocky is bound to get another before his career is done, Lachie Neale was 1 mark off in round 22 last year but not sure I can see him getting that close again.

Hey guys, just wanted to give a quick thanks to all who provided info and contributed in this thread. Gave you a plug at the end of the post on The Mongrel Punt, but just wanted to add it here personally. Wealth of info - thank you.

Nice article. You might want to adjust this sentence slightly - Only four players have been able to pull off a Quadruple Double in NBA history. Nate Thurmond, Alvin Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson.

Hakeem did it twice in the month of March in 1990. This article headline incorrectly says 5 players have done it but its 5 occasions its been done.

I actually think they rescinded one stat that night, mate. It caused him to miss it by one.

Video review screwing things up...

He was also really close in the finals once, from memory.

I'd all comes down to tackles and marks. I'd be surprised if any player registers 10 tackles and 10 marks in 2018 without also hitting double figures for kicks and handballs.

Matt Priddis would've had a stack of triple doubles, but being an inside player he wasn't much of a marker. A few others are similar. Had 8 in a game once and a couple of 7s but averaged 2.5 overall. Gaff on the other hand I could easily see getting 10+ marks but he tackles at the rate of a 1990s full forward. Tom Mtichell's not a bad bet, was getting 5 marks a game last year and plenty of tackles. Has hit 10 marks before playing for Sydney but in an outside role so only 1 tackle. Gibbs, Rockliff, Zorko, Sloane the most likely.

Isaac Heeney might be one going forward. Very good overhead, has had a few very high tackle games and with more midfield time should have the disposals covered.

Zorko is a bit of a sleeper for mine. He could have the occasional ten mark game and is a strong bugger. Holds his tackles and gets plenty of the ball.

Cheers

Be interesting (not significant though) knowing what the Supercoach scores were for those individual games

Good question, selwoods and stantons would be off the charts you would think , selwood especially if he jagged a few free kicks for

Joel Selwood has only had 10 marks in a game 3 times in 249 games. Corey Enright had 10 tackles in a game just the once in 332.

Stanton on the other hand only managed double digit tackles in a game three times in 255 games, but managed to hit 10 marks on 28 occasions (and finished on 9 marks a further 14 times).

Wouldn’t surprise me if Zach Merrett were to pick up a quad double at some point, just needs to start getting some more marks as he’s already hit 10 tackles in a game 7 times in 4 seasons compared to twice for marks (and of course a lot of times for kicks and handballs). Closest he’s gotten to one so far was 18 kicks, 16 handballs, 7 marks and 10 tackles against Richmond in 2016 (and in the same season against the same team he had a 11/11/7/9 game.
