Game Day Qualifying Final: Adelaide vs Sydney

Surely Grundy won't go for that it was sfa, reprimand at most, surely.......but regardless the form of the team on the eave of finals is worrying, can't remember the last time we lost the final game leading into september.

Interesting that Armstrong came on and played a full game ( Yes a defender went out), but why hasn't Morton been given that chance. Now we go into september with a spasmatic foward line, heavily reliant on a 20 yr old - when we should've tried something else, last real chance to.... and as it turns out...wouldn't have mattered given the players didn't seem to give a f...after half-time anyway.

Smith & Reid are the obvious ins, if Sydeny can beat anyone away from home this week, it's Adelaide...but the current form is very worrying and given the quality of some of the lower top 8 teams a win is essential or else it might be all over before it even began.

In: Reid, Smith
Out: Grundy, Walsh

I did have this crazy idea that won't happen but I think Goodes would be good as a sub. He hasn't been that great the last few weeks and I don't know if that's because of a lingering injury or has lost his touch but he could be a game changer off the bench and would have fresher legs.
But then again he could light it up next week and be best on ground for all I know.

Doc Peter Larkin said that Reid will miss anotherweek.

That makes our task even harder but we'll give it a crack

Yeah and he also said Jude would be out for six weeks:rolleyes:

Longmire said during the press conference that Reid will be fine for next week.

Lot of anger about tonight, perhaps justifiable to an extent. But I wouldn't be throwing the baby out with the bathwater just yet.

The thing that got us beat today, at least in the initial sense, was the umpires falling for the confected outrage of the crowd. Geelong were allowed to attack the contest with far more ferocity than we were. Pyke's perfect tackle on Selwood....around the neck. Malceski contest....free in front of goal. 2 clear throws out of a pack. Bartel lying on the ball. Bartel dropping in a tackle. Both in the back. Pyke gets cannoned into from behind. Holding the ball. Once the game was beyong us we stopped playing and went into preservation. k.

great post 100 per cent agree... when u r the away team u have to be so careful about giving away frees. whenever there is something that can be paid to home side they will do it. has to very pronounced for away side to get it. umps are def influenced by the crowd.

Pyke? He has been good and his inclusion has meant we have some extra height. He stays!!! If Grundy is clean then he will play. Force was minimal. High but I am not sure the intent was there.

You probably should have read my explanation in a latter post but that's ok, you can jump all over this one! You have your opinion and I'll have mine ok?

Here's my view re: our finals chances this year.

A win this week is critical if we are to have any hope of making a GF. (Probably even for that matter a Preliminary)
I know we can beat any team in the comp but we're in pretty average form at the moment.

If we can pull off a win this week against Adelaide, we'll be over the easier side of the draw. Hawks and Cats both should win easily, so that would mean that if we lose, we'd have to play Geelong (at ANZ) and then Hawthorn (at the G) to make a GF.

On other other side, if we win this week, we'll most likely be playing a Collingwood or West Coast at ANZ. West Coast we match up on very well and I think if we played Collingwood in a Prelim, we'd break the drought.

In sum, this week's match will decide our fate in season 2012.

I wouldn't say we're in average form but we have let games slip and were simply outclassed today.

While I agree that the match against the Crows will be crucial for us I think we shouldn't be worried about playing Geelong or the Hawks on the way through the finals because you have to beat the best to win it this year so we'll have to play them anyway.

I think this is a very good assesment of our chances.

Is anyone else starting to think LRT is pretty useless in the forward line? His hands arent good enough and his kicking is pretty horrid. He would be much better off playing key back, especially if Reid comes back in. Probably would require a further change with either walsh/tdl/morton/white being in the team.

Its probably too late to make that change, but as soon as our forward line consisted of goodes/LRT/walsh yesterday, we were never going to kick a winning score.

Talk about INs is all well and good, but the vital ingredient the swans need right now is the one thing that may be hardest to attain ... Confidence.

Truth is, what killed us yesterday was not the manpower on the field, it was the affect of tight losses to the hawks and pies. It's just very hard to keep getting up after dispiriting losses like those. To me, our form has been okay. After last week's game many observers suggested swans hawks might be a GF preview. What a difference a week makes.

Longmire and his staff have a very difficult task ahead getting the boys up for next week. They have what it takes to win it, there are some great INs coming back, and we've benefited from several weeks of high intensity footy. But that will mean nothing if we don't believe we can do it.

Horse must accentuate the positive all week. He must instill in the team the idea that they can do it. And if he can (and I think it's unlikely) we may just leave Football Park with a win.

our condifence is shot at the moment, we've usually come into finals playing our best footy under roos and longmire last year. This year we've had a tough draw but no excuses because we're a top 4 team as well. If the boys get up for this game, I will have underestimated them severely. Prove me wrong swans!

I am concerned if we dont beat Adelaide next week we wont get a chance to rest our players and the last month will cost us dearly in the finals.

One think I've seen this year, is when we've played poorly we've always backed it up with big improvement the next week.

Agree that we've lost the confidence to actually take a strangle hold of the game and win however general gameplay for the most part is still very good.

Saturdays game is even money, and if we can go away and win, the confidence will be back. Our record at AAMI is good but against the Crows not so good, something will have to give.

ffs sake thats when footy should be played

VFA used to play all their games on Sunday though and the VFA is an older competition than the VFL/AFL. This was up until VFL switched their games to Sunday of course in order to get a larger audience...

In my opinion, the AFL should just get with the times and play all their games on Sunday when people actually don't work. Screw this Saturday crap.

Other way around isn't it. Saturday was always football gameday and VFA started playing on Sunday because it couldn't compete with the VFL?

Might be wrong though but I've always thought Saturday was the no.1 day for football. Sunday was recovery/sleep/do nothing day.

If there was any type of game i hated going to it was Sunday games. I would have Saturday and Sundays off and would much rather i had Sunday to laze about rather than getting home from a game, getting 3 or 4 hours relax before going to bed for work the next day.

Horse is faced with an interesting challenge. The players will naturally feel a bit down after the last month of footy, we've let slip some winnable games and were outclassed yesterday, but it certainly hasn't been all glass empty stuff given the quality of opposition. But it's a long season and a few guys will be feeling tired and sore, even more so after falling short against the best sides. Still, we have had a great season and Horse will be ramming down the fact that we can match it with the best. One more big effort and we will earn a much-needed week off. And from there, anything can happen. Maintaining a positive mindset will be crucial. Big job for the leaders of the club this week.
