Is griffen really going to play down back? League teams saying he could get the tippet match up. It's hard when McPharlin goes down then Johnson too but I just can't see the ruck being able to go with tippet

Dawson To Tippett, Silvagni to Buddy is my guess. Won't matter who's playing in the forward line for the swans if we put enough pressure on them.

Thought about it a little more.
Don't really see how Griff will fit in except as insurance for Sandiland.

Our players is versatile enough for RTB to play around with.
If we need more pressure in defense, move Mayne back to defense.
If we need more height in defense, move Taberner back down.
Need more marking options up front, move Fyfe into forward 50.
Want to troll Sydney after we have the game won, move MOTY Dawson to FF.

I sure hope not. Sydney are not a stupid team, they'll work to isolate him and run off Griffin all night, you'd almost be better playing MJ in his state if you're going to do that.

I don't know, maybe he's improved out of sight, but last time we saw Griff at AFL level, he was half paced, a touch lost and miles off match fit. I'm sure he's improved his conditioning since then, and the guy has a great heart, but how we use him (if he plays) is going to have be carefully considered - and of course it would have been by Ross and the team, but as a defender?? Surely not.

Clarke I can see down there, but Griff, no way.

My thoughts on the team selections are these .
1 Sandi was running sore in the last quarter against Port and the selectors have named Griffin an case Sandi has any problems getting up for the game .
2 Griffin has been named but will be omitted if Sandi is deemed right to go .
3 We will not play 3 ruckmen wet or dry ,one will be dropped for De Boer or Crozier as the Sub .
4. If its wet we will play De Boer because of his hard body in contests , Crozier if its dry for his Speed and evasion skills as well as his ability to kick goals.
Well you just proved that you aren't Mark Harvey.

I could see Clarke going to Tippet, and Griffin taking over the usual Clarke HF/alternate ruck role (especially as Sandilands isn't quite 100% and will need extended breaks forward). Griffin subs off 3rd quarter for a runner. It would be extraordinarily unusual to play Griffin as the sub, and I'm struggling to see who that would be.

Basil was saying last nite that they may be putting Clarke on to Buddy.

This reminds me of the Crows playing Pitman, Rehn and Aaron Keating (from memory) in the 1997 grand final with Pitman on Stuart Lowe.

If we go in with 3 rucks, one will play as a key defender. The crows also played with Rehn pushing back in the defence a lot , survived the early onslaught and out scored them in the second half.

Assuming we go in with 3 rucks, I can see Clarke on Franklin\Tippett, Dawson on Tippett\Franklin and Silvagni on Goodes\Reid.

While I am not completely against Clarke going into defense, I still do not believe we need another ruck men. Sandi can ruck 80-90% of the game, and Taberner or Clarke can do the rest.

Griffin could cost us our forward pressure in our 50, and if we lose that we lose the game as it will allow Sydney to move the ball quickly into their forward 50.

Playing two ruckmen has been working quite well for us in recent weeks - and has resulted in our ruck being particularly dominant in the latter stages. And going by last week, I'm not sure Sandi is 100% to be able to shoulder that burden solo at the moment.

Have to remember Clarke isn't your typical ruck man. He's fairly quick and nimble for a tall, has a reasonable tank. Kinda like a better version of Nic Nat.

He could lock down a forward position with Sandi and Griff rotating through the bench and/or forward which will force Sydney to send one of their key forwards, most likely Reid, down back to match them up.

Sydneys strength all year is stretching the oppositions defence but here's Ross countering that very ploy.

Having said that, this is either going to end very very badly OR Ross is going to be hailed as the greatest coach that ever lived. I give him credit for trying to mix it up, it's obvious some changes needed to be done to battle Swans and I guess after much deliberation with the coaching staff this is what they have come up with - would have been a lot of thought and analysis gone into it.

The other thing that we need to factor in is that there were possibly some last minute fitness tests/decisions that were going to be made today if they had have flown out as scheduled (most likely Sandi looking at the selections). With the delay, there wont be opportunity for that to happen now (effectively).

Edit: Just picked up the above post, if true then that is why Griff was in the team all along - as cover for a change that was going to be tested out today, maybe.

Rumour that Sandi didn't fly.

Odds came in over night from $1.48 to $1.35 for a Syd win on news of the flight delay. If that rumour is true, watch them come in massively in the next few hours.

If you have the stomach to bet against your own team (and you're a betting person to begin with), might help to offset the disappointment of losing tomorrow by throwing a bit of money on Sydney before their odds come in even more.
