Opinion Qualifying Final Changes vs. Sydney

Buddy not playing is massive. Not for his impact as a player, but the knock on effect on who Mcpharlin/Johnson/Dawson/Ibbo get. Unbelievably we may get back to Johnno playing the main interceptor role. Ibbo has been great, but he's no MJ at his best.

Their biggest fwd threat now is a first year player IMO.

If we lose this it's curtains and deservedly so.

Walters is fine. They are being super, ultra conservative with him because they can. Freo has earned that luxury.

Johnno should be 100% by now. He has three games under his belt.

Ballas will be raw. I'm confident that Fyfe will be back to his early season form.

I reckon we will lose the free kick count but not by that much. Eagles however will get double the frees of Hawthorn.

We struggle to cover players of his speed - Spurr cannot go with them.

With Buddy out and a chance of rain is there a chance we go for more run out of defense, leave Dawson out and go with just McPharlin, MJ and Ibbo plus something like Spurr, Shero and Sutty. This would be basically be like we started the year in the backline because Dawson and Silvagni were missing and we were doing ok then. Any one of those two and a half (Ibbo) defenders are dangerous on the rebound.

I'd like to see it but maybe not for the finals. A bit of a risk. His first quarter bullet like passes and straight bull at a gate running is perfect for a sub role.

I like the idea of Dawson on Tippett when he plays deep. He will play tough and make him earn it. If Reid swings forward, then Macca and Johno can work him over. Ibbo can take Goodes

i hope we play 2 ruckmen as it has been highlighted that ruckmen are having a huge impact this year and heaven help us if Sandi gets hurt. that risk is too great to not play a second ruckman

Spurr should be ok for Heeney, I still like the idea of Grey for Rohan. I actually think Grey could take Heeney too. Massive respect for Grey I reckon his name will come at match committee. He's got a great combination of assets with his pace, strength and attack on the contest. I reckon he will become a RTB favourite.

Anyone else thinking about Duffield as the sub (hear me out)

So we blast out of the gates, smash and crash our way to a 30 point lead, last quarter sub Fyfe (rest him up if he's not 100%) and let Duffield be the spare man back with one less forward.

Personally the matchups I'd like to see are
Dawson V Tippett (Allows just a blanket and Ibbo third man up)
McPharlin V Ried (up the ground allows Johnno to control the defensive 50)
Mundy V Kennedy (2 top contested mids, he's always a gun in finals)
Walters/Ballas V ??? Rampe and Shaw I'd say?
Fyfe V Hannebery (Now that's gonna be a crucial match up)
