Anyone just watched Lateline? The Queen has apparently instructed Blair to hassle Bush to sign the Kyoto Agreement.

Begs an interesting question re her Prime Minister in Australia.

I wouldnt believe it because it was on Lateline. It was well known that the Queen thoroughly disliked Thatcher but never interfered. Charlie might speak up now and then but the Queen stays well clear as should the GG.

It's a press beat up.

There is a rumour that she spoke to the Blair about that...neither the PMs office or the queens comments on those talks ( they talk regularly).

Firstly the PM and parliament is above the queen.

Secondly she is of German decent (the Windsors changed their name in WW1) so what do you expect from her when visiting Germany.

Thirdly, do you think Blair gives a rat's about any Royal opinion?

And finaly, get rid of the queen but keep our flag.

By convention and for all practical purposes, yes, but legalistically, no.

What would be wrong with the house of saxe-coburg-gotha?

She is partly of german decent, but as with most noble houses, you can trace their bloodlines from pretty much anywhere in Europe. The name of the house comes from Prince Albert ( Victoria's Husband ).

He's a politician..he cares about public opinion, and the Queen has considerable influence over that should she choose to exercise it.

The monarch of England holds reserve powers that are rarely exercised. In that sense she can dismiss the government of the day. She is also Supreme Commander of the armd forces. She is meant to remain above politics and it is ony by her assent can a political party form government. She can also withhold her assent to any law passed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Any law so passed needs her assent to become law. All politicians take an oath of allegiance to her as the living representative of the country.

The Queen's father may have been of largely German descent, but her mother was of Scottish nobility...the Bowes-Lyons, who themselves are descended from the marriage of the daughter of Robert II of Scotland, first o the Stewart kings to the Thane of Glamis.

Take a look at her immediate ancestry. Of her eight great grandparents, three were German (Edward VII, Francis Duke of Teck and Mary Adelaide of Hanvover), one was Danish, (Alexandra of Denmark), one was Scottish (Claude Bowes-Lyon Earl of Strathmore) and three were Anglo-Scot (Frances Smith of Blendon Hall, Charles Cavendish-Bentick and Carolina Burnaby of Baggrave Hall).

In fact Queen Elizabeth is far more Anglo-Celtic in blood that her ancestor Queen Victoria was. Prince William is even more Anglo-Celtic. He can trace his line of descent from a number of famous English lines including the Spencers, the Howards, the Dudleys, the Devereuxs, the Staffords, the Percys and so on. He's also descended from the Scottish clans of the Campbells, the Hamiltons, the Douglases, the Murrays and so on and so forth.

Let's keep the constitutional monarchial system for Australia as well as the current flag.

Yes, that was Victorias family name....but considering her family had lived in England primarily for well over a century, I'd consider them English.

My family name is scottish..but I was the first of my family to set foot in Scotland in (at least ) 4 generations...am I still a Scot?

Apart from that, I think Roylion covetered the other points I wanted to make.

Actually, no...at least not in England..there she's very popular with the lower classes..in no small part because she's 'above' pollitics. Ironically it gives her a lot of power which she can (almost) never use.

A very infomative post. It made me wonder if this is the kind of "democracy" the British are helping to introduce in Iraq. Will Saddam apply for the job........plenty of experience.

We should accept the modern world and appoint the US president as our head of state in exactly the same role as the Queen now performs. Would provide the same checks and balances.

Every 10 years or so we could have a referendum and give the top-corner of the flag to the which ever nation we feel most inferior and subserviant too. That way we could keep up with the times.
