Even if some of the new age stuff is a bit of a placebo, never underestimate the power of the human mind. And I agree with you - there is absolutely no harm in trying a more natural approach, as long as you're doing so with the help and guidance of your doctor/medical professional.

No actual doctor or medical professional would advise a "natural" approach. These people are con artists, not doctors.

There is no such thing as "alternative medicine". There's actual medicine, and there's bullshit.

Yet again, you show that you view things in black and white, and that you know a little about most things, but not enough to make a consistently valuable contribution.

"Alternative" Medicine is bullshit. If it wasn't, it would just be called medicine.

Ask literally any real doctor in the world.

Eating healthy will do nothing to help your cancer. That kind of thinking is exactly what killed Steve Jobs. Alternative medicine gets people killed on a regular basis and anyone who puts any faith in it at all is a complete idiot.

This was a doc at RPH, I'd hardly call them a con artist.

And I agree, there is no such thing as alternative medicine - there is stuff that works and stuff that doesn't. Big drug companies have brainwashed so many of us in terms of our perception of what "works" and while I am not against taking medication prescribed by doctors, I just think there should be more questions by patients afterwards to find out what the drugs they are taking are doing to them and if there are natural sources to the particular element that is going to treat their symptoms

Though that is a whole different kettle of fish

Having worked in health for a couple of decades, my personal opinion (FWIW) is the same as yours Ydraw. I've seen a whole lot of spooky new age stuff spruiked as science. Not for me.

I went to the chemist to buy some pain relief meds earlier in the year, I had surgery to fuse my ankle and it was taking ages to heal and very painful. I had weaned off the oxycodone and just wanted something to take the edge off, especially at night as the throbbing was keeping me awake at night.

Shop assistant tried really hard to get me to drive 17 kms down the road to the health shop to but some turmeric powder. No s**t

In the end I said have you got something to help or not and I will go back to my GP and get a script, she smiled gave me some pain relief and a flyer which advertises the health shop in Busselton.

I told my GP about this on my next visit and he got really annoyed, apparently his patients are getting asked all sorts of questions asked of them by shop assistants questioning their scripts, always pushing the natural method of healing.

Since when did these people become qualified medical practitioners

Even if there was a natural source - and there aren't for most drugs, and the ones there are we have known about for centuries - e.g. Willow Bark (Aspirin) and Poppies (all opiates) - you are much better off taking the chemical version since the dosage is known and the preparation is done for you.

It's peoples' false belief that natural is always better that results in most of these issues in the first place. There are millions of things that occur in nature that will just flat out kill you. Natural is not a synonym for good.

There is a reason pharmacology abandoned whole plant extracts in favor of isolated active ingredients. The amount of active ingredient in a plant can vary with factors like the variety, the geographic location, the weather, the season, the time of harvest, soil conditions, storage conditions, and the method of preparation. Foxglove contains a mixture of digitalis-type active ingredients but it is difficult to control the dosage. The therapeutic dose of digitalis is very close to the toxic dose. Pharmacologists succeeded in preparing a synthetic version: now the dosage can be controlled, the blood levels can be measured, and an antibody is even available to reverse the drug’s effects if needed.

Also once medicinal marijuana starts being prescribed more, I expect to see it have a very positive effect on a lot of conditions that many people have

There is an enormous amount of harm in "trying a more natural approach."

We're all going to die in the end, as adults we should be allowed to make those decisions for ourselves. There is an enormous amount of harm in driving a car.

They are trying to upsell you a product they have a much higher margin on.

Pharmacy in Perth make more money off expensive urine and sunglasses than they do medication - they are like petrol stations, very little on the main product so they fluff around the shop with other things on big margins to increase profits.

Not if they're sending people to a shop 17 k's away.

The release said Quentin' took extreme holistic measures' without defining what this entailed. It was his choice and may or may not have been the wisest decision.
I'm sure there are plenty of threads where you can go at it hammer and tongs, without declaring the man who appears to be very ill is so because he is an idiot.

Gee whiz, back on topic folks!!

Great to see the footy community come together and smash the target amount. This is one less worry now for the family and may well open up other medical treatments that are very expensive.

All the very best to the family in this very trying time.

must say i was quite discussed with some of the comments here regarding alternatives such as holistic medicine s part of an overall approach to having the best chance of survival for as long as possible......for those who may question me i suggest you don't.....both quacks and medical specialists need to always be mindful that they do not know everything and to consider the patient above themselves. I have witnessed some terrible advice by some of the supposed best specialists too as well as what some idiot quacks of all kinds of supposed healing practices. I will keep quentin in my prayer he will receive the best treatments and make the best decisions for his health and well being. For those who don't know... personal well being is very important for the immune system in fighting cancer....enough said. Am with you mate.

******* loved this guy. Met him a few times through the ex's brother. Legend of a bloke and will be missed.
