I wonder what the bears would look like today if they were still around. With the demise of north sydney bears i wonder if they would use a actual bear
Hard to imagine, because Fitzroy has so much to do with their reinvention. They made their only finals appearance in their last year. If they'd had gone on to be moderately successful, I'd imagine they'd keep their '95 strip. But if they declined and so too did their fanbase, well, they'd probably change things up a bit. I'll sit in the middle and say they went okay, maybe notched up a flag by 2013. The cerise would probably darken a little, but the chevron would have stayed in a noticeable capacity. Their 2013 away jumper would no doubt be like the Port and Fremantle options: A white reversal.

Fitzroy would be a top eight club this year. They'd have Marc Murphy and Jonno Brown and a few other capable blokes... Yet with average success and a very tight squeeze between North, Carlton, and Collingwood, they would've changed jumpers up. The piss-stain and claw mark would have been Roy jumpers as they tried to appeal to the kids. Maybe the maroon, white, and navy to differentiate themselves from the slew of red and royal?

Very cool scans, though. Always been a bit of an interest of mine. Absurd how West Coast and Fremantle tried saying how the WAFL could continue at its then level. Suuuuuure. The Bears one sounds like a year 10 kid trying to be intelligent. "Or whatever" is a particularly professional and articulate way of rounding off a sentence. So too "cuddly" being used. Though my personal favourite part is how ammo their logo is: Pencils and Faber-Castells! Probably more interesting than most of the stuff being trotted out on computers these days...

Oh, and I dug that West Coast news animation! The marketing department there are absolute galahs. There is no more iconic of a typeface in Aussie sport. Delightfully 1980s. It's being wasted.

Did fremantle ever consider playing there games at fremantle oval?

When they entered the comp subi & or waca were not world class stadiums (nothings changed)

Is freo oval that behind subi?

No where near big enough, only holds around 17,000 nowadays.

Fremantle Oval isn't near AFL standard. Two thirds of the ground are concrete terraces, one part with a shed on top of it. Then there's the old grandstand, the South Fremantle clubrooms and the Freo HQ. Even with safe standing, you'd get 13,000ish in there. Sometimes the Dockers play pre-season games there, unfortunately not enough. The atmosphere is really good. For those playing along at home, Freo Oval is right in the middle of Fremantle – so there's a real vibrancy during Fremantle Derbies and Freo pre-season-ers.

But Subiaco is such a hole. The Sherrin stand at Vic Park is genuinely cleaner and newer than almost all of Subi. It isn't actually that far behind Subi...

Subi is trash. When i visited i was shocked how crap the facilities are. Knowing at subi the 3 tier is ancient. The stand built in the late 90's is the only new stand & its pretty crap.

They should play a nab cup game at freo. They would pack the joint.

I agree, Freo Oval is my favourite place to watch WAFL after Bassendean. The 2009(?) semi-final between South and Swans was a buzz.

They play NAB Challenge games there. I think the last was against Geelong, or maybe it was the West Coast one? Unfortunately, all of Fremantle Oval backed onto something else: Roads, heritage listed buildings (like the beautiful old ticket gate), unwanted shops, a hospital... Otherwise, a boutique Freo ground (Docker... Dockerland...Dock...land... Docklands!) would've been amazing and really added to the north v south divide. Never would've happened, though.

Just checking out the Freo facey then, some grouse photos of our history on there. Including this beauty: A sunny Subi day, the Ochre, and the best Derby punch-up that'll ever be:

I think it's interesteing that Freo have logos & numbers sewn on yet West Coast's are all sublimated. Were Freo using acrylic jumpers (unlikely), or did Adidas just do things differently to Puma??

What did you do?!
He means the old prison, which is a big thing with tourists. They don't use it anymore.

The jumper is polyester. You can see that by the way the material stretches, and the fact there are no stich marks for the anchor or colour plates. No idea why the AFL and Alinta logos were stitched.

Adidas didn't sublimate until 2001. Nike led the pack with sublimation and side panels in the mid to late 90s. The Bulldogs were the last team to sublimate their numbers in 2007.

Pretty sure you will find Adelaide jumpers with sublimated numbers prior to 2001.

Hello everyone. Maybe this is where. Should be posting my question and photo.
I have a Fitzroy lace up jumper from my uncle who Played with South Melbourne. He suffers from early on set Alzheimer's so getting info can be a bit hard but his footy info is still pretty good, anyhow
It's no 17 and I'm looking for a year and possible owner/player of the 17 and a guide as to what it would be worth. He says its been sitting around with a few other jumpers for 29 years or so and would rather cash it in but I have no idea what something like this would be worth.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Woah, that's really cool. Definitely something worth keeping. I am sorry to hear about your uncle and his condition, though.

I'll page Mero and Gibbsy. They have a PDF folder with all the club's sponsorship details. With the vague timeframe, they might be able to figure out.

It was worn by Russ Hodges (not to be confused with the American broadcaster) in 1978, who, from 73-77, played with South Melbourne. He played one more season with Fitzroy in 1979 before his career ended.

I can't find much info on Hodges himself, besides stats, which would indicate he wasn't a particularly huge profile player. Having said that, given what it is, I personally wouldn't settle for much less than $300.
