Try telling baseballer Mark McGwire that Cardinals is a wussy name and see how far you get :club::club::club:

Cardinals is a great name - far better than "Saints" and "Swans".

My understanding is that "Old Easts" came about when East Perth joined the comp... as there were now two Easts, East Freo were the original or "Old" one. That pic is from 1982, but I know for sure that by 1985/86 they were the Sharks as I remember them playing in the night series against Richmond.

Ah - of course - Full Points Footy has the answer.

The Shark mascot was adopted in 1983.

Cardinals: according to http://fullpointsfooty.net/west_perth_(3).htm the switch to Falcons came about in 1993, followed by a relocation from Leederville to Joondalup in 1994. Was there perhaps a local "Joondalup Falcons" club which West Perth aligned with?
Cardinals was the original 19th century nickname for the club, though, after "Victorians" became "West Perth".

West perth changed from cardies to falcons in about 82. The joondalup move had nothing to do with the cardies and falcons change

McGwire was a legend, doesn't change the fact that his team's nickname doesn't exactly engender fear in their opposition's hearts. :)

Wanted to revive this, especially being on holidays right now and basically having shit all to do.

The support is there, especially from CAB12, Silent Alarm and Smeags.

Obviously we have the comprehensive History of AFL Guernseys, SpecialWindler's NRL jerseys gallery, but I am yet to find a collection of A-League jerseys. I know that there is this on the Colours of Football website, but that is largely incomplete and hasn't been updated for years.

What would be ideal would be something like Historical Kits - I visit their website regularly along with Sports Logos and Football Shirt Culture, and find them all a wealth of information. :thumbsu:

Would anyone be willing to work on a collaborative effort to create a history of A-League jerseys? (only from 2004-05 onwards). Not too sure what template we would use though.

I have some amazing soccer templates with millions of designs on each ones. Each are relevant to each apparel sponsor so if they are up to date collar wise, then all is need is A League and hyundai patches. I would also glady pitch in and help. So if we wanted to form a team and get eveyrhting done asap I am one to help. I may have a crack at one soon and then we can go from there with templates and the like. Only thing is, where would this history be set up?

I am actually really pumped and want to help make this happen.

I am really behind this. There is one i knocked up just then. I am also heading into year 12 but slow and steady and make sure its done right, no rush. I had troubled with the Vs but just wanted to show what I can do and how it looks. Obviously shorts and socks can be added. How is that though?

I don't have photoshop. I too am a year 12, so I can't really justify spending a few hundred dollars on a program. I'm going to England/the US for two years at the end of school, and then i'll be heading to uni... money is of the essence this time.

I can help with paint templates. A definitive A-League kit history is really easy. If we add some nice, simple templates, we can make it seem interesting.

Maybe if we work out a nice set of templates for paint, we can all do a bit of a collab. There's been two or three templates.

For anyone that cares, Adelaide United have recently signed with Errea. It was in the Adelaide Advertiser. I'm disappointed, considering Umbro had been heavily linked since the end of 2010.

An A-League one wouldn't be that difficult to put together. I have 2-3 Photoshop soccer templates to use and did a concept for every A-League team plus 5 Adelaide United versions. You can view them here.

PS: Silent Alarm ... I've never paid for any copy of Photoshop I've used. ;)

I didn't word my above post very well... sorry about that. I too am (practically) on holidays as of now. I'll have even more time on my hands. Hopefully, we could have all the A-League kits done by the end of the month.

I suggest using a template like this:

combined with this:

I suggest that the first image should be look of the kit template. A few changes should be implemented though.
- Socks with a defined turnover, ala the True Colours (second) image
- A more football kit shape
- Squarer shorts

That's all fairly easy, I think. If we set out the design presentation a little more clearly like the second image, all should be well. I also believe that EACH template used in the A-League should be used: for example, we don't use this

central-coast-mariners-en-casa-camiseta-de-f%C3%BAtbol-2006-2007-s_1748_1.jpg

on the same template as this
adelaide%20united%20-%20romario2.jpg

We have slight variations. So, the shoulder panel is actually a shoulder panel, not just a differently coloured part.

Wholeheartedly endorse your post SA. In fact GG if you're around these A-League posts could do in being moved to a new thread. :thumbsu:

Back on Q&A topic - why is the myATM logo on Port's guernsey still glossy? You can tell under the light that it looks transferred on. This is odd becuse both sponsors are non-sublimated yet myATM have been sponsors for over a year. Any Port people know answers?

Was at the footy today and saw a bloke wearing a jumper like the one below, but with silver/grey cuffs and collar. It looked pretty legit, logos were printed on. Anyone got an explanation?

I have a Q,i recently saw this on Richmond's website store now i understand the jeep sponsorship was made after the guernsey's were. Now with Richmond's 2011 guernsey having a transferred black jeep logo with no background, you would think they would do the same for the Training jumpers just to blend in?

Not always. Maybe they just think the black logo on silver isn't bold enough. I don't think we should complain, we've got a pretty awesome deal. As much as I hate the Tiges, their latest jumper looks great.

I do however hate those clash/pre-season/training jumpers. Those lines are just too complicated. Maybe keep the main red part on the left, but have the outlining swirl more flat and singular - you know, just ONE line of red piping around it. But the tiger head still creates an imbalance, and creates far too much old/new clutter.

I know on the supporter guernseys the myATM logos are sublimated, as i'm wearing one right now. To be honest I haven't noticed that they are still glossy but i'll have a look next game.

He was a few rows ahead of me but they didn't really look faded, looked pretty solidly coloured.

Was it a local team guernsey or something? Someone wearing the same design as the eagles but with slightly different colours?

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but this is one for the Hawthorn people. Wasn't there an arrangement in place for #5 to be reserved for the captain, in a similar vein to Richmond (#17) and Port Adelaide (#1) as a tribute to Peter Crimmins? Shouldn't Hodge be wearing #5 this year and Mitchell switching to something else?

No, I'm pretty sure Peter Crimmins family choose who should wear the guernsey number. Daniel Harford wore the guernsey before him. If you could remember Shane Crawford was our captain for a while and wore #9, Richie Vandenburg wore #21 when he was captain

Yep, fair enough. I thought it was an initiative that was just started up when Mitchell became captain (which I think was the year he switched numbers from #28), sort of like how the Richmond and Port traditions were started (well, restarted) around the middle of the 00s. Of course, it may just be that the family chose Mitchell anyway and the fact that he took the captaincy from Vandenburg was coincidental. Cheers.

Fitzroy in the mid 90s were seen as the last team to have a traditional number for the captain, ending with Brad Boyd. Port started up the following year so it's been an "unbroken trend", at least one team reserving a number for the captain.

I read a few years back that Collingwood for many years (up until the 1970s) had their captain wearing #1, until Ray Shaw chose to keep his existing number. The Pies were considering bringing the idea back. It's probably the most obvious of the reserved numbers and it's a great tradition. Wouldn't want it enforced strictly by the AFL though.

(And I wouldn't want to see a return to the days Collingwood had in the 1910s where you wore a number based on your position alphabetically in the team, resulting in one guy wearing about 10 different numbers in his career!)

My mate's a Hawthorn fan and told me the Hawks have allocated #1 to the fans. I jibed that it does the memory of Ray Jencke's career a disservice...
